<서산박첨지놀이>는 충청남도 서산지방에 전승되어오는 인형극으로서 토박이 광대패들이 전승의 주체를 이룬다. 주인공 박첨지를 비롯해 박첨지 큰마누라와 작은마누라, 평안감사, 홍동지, 소경, 상제 그리고 만장꾼과 상여꾼 등 다양한 인물들이 등장해 <서산박첨지놀이>를 이끌어간다. 이 인형극에서 박첨지는 등장인물이자 극의 해설자로서 기능하며 또한 막과 막 사이를 이어주는 매개체로 작용한다. 박첨지놀이는 남사당 <꼭두각시놀이>의 영향을 받아 형성되었지만, 이후 서산지방 고유의 문화적 특질을 살린 민속극으로 재탄생되었다. 서산은 불교문화가 만개했던 지역으로 이러한 불교문화의 전통이 그대로 인형극에 반영되었다. 피조리거리의 생략과 절짓는 거리에서 공중사를 허물지 않고 그대로 존립시키는 것은 그 대표적인 예이다. 또한 상례문화의 전통이 놀이 속에 투영되어 화려하고도 풍성한 상여거리를 연출하고 있다. 공동체 의식을 중시여기는 풍조는 <서산박첨지놀이> 전막에 걸쳐 극을 지탱하는 주요 요소이다. 집단의 존속을 위해 조화가 강조되고, 이를 통해 지역공동체 의식을 확장시키고 있기 때문이다. 무엇보다 <서산박첨지놀이>는 현전 인형극 중, 유일한 마을단위 민속인형극이라는 가치를 지니고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그간의 성과는 활발하지 못했다. <서산박첨지놀이>에 대한 다각적인 관심과 연구는 기존의 전승연희들을 새롭게 조망할 수 있는 관점을 제공해줄 것이며, 덧붙여 중요 문화재로 지정된 연희들의 질적 향상에도 커다란 영향을 끼칠 것으로 여겨진다.

SeoSan PakChumJi Nori is handed down as a representative traditional play of Chungnam. SeoSan PakChumJi Nori has influenced on KokDuGakSi Nori of Namsadang group. PakChumJi is a main character in SeoSan PakChumJi Nori. He roles as a commentator and character. SeoSan PakChumJi Nori consists of three acts(ParkChumJi, PyeungYangGamSa, Blind). This puppet play is composed many puppets like as first wife and second wife of PakChumJi, MyeungNo, PyeungYangGamSa, HongDongJi, mourners, pallbearers, carpenters, priest. 'Teru Teru Teruya' has various means. In the enter and exit of characters, especially PakChumJi make use of sign to connect scenes. Above all DaeJapI(puppet's operator) takes charge of operation(puppet), singing, speech. The skill of DaeJapI affects on puppet's movement and sentiments. SeoSan PakChumJi Nori is influenced by Chungnam's funeral rites and Buddhist culture, and is expressing this cultural peculiarity in Nori Pan. This play has the value as a unique puppet play that is transmitted by native actors. Nevertheless SeoSan PakChumJi Nori isn't appraised for the value. The interest and researches about SeoSan PakChumJi Nori can contribute to development of oral Noris.
