그림형제로부터 시작된 동요 수집은 인류가 상실 해버린 진정한 시문학이 아동의 정서 속 에 감춰져 있다는 인식에 그 바탕을 두고 있었으며, 이들이 추구한 연구의 두 방향은 이같은 고고학적 관심과 낭만적 동경, 곧 태곳적 삶의 흔적들이 동요 속에 남아 있을 것이라는 기대 였다. 수집된 동요들은 대부분 놀이말(Kinderreime)이며, 멜로디 수집은 20세기 말경에 이 루어진다. 구전된 동요는 민속동요로, 창작자가 알려진 것들은 예술동요로 분류된다(선구자: 루터). 유아들로부터 취학 이전 연령의 아이들을 위한 노래가 동요이며, 그 중 가장 큰 부분 을 차지하는 것은 자장가다. 토속적 자장가는 성탄절 노래들과 결부되어 아기예수 및 마리아 와 연계된 시와 음악이 나오게 된다. “자장자장”(한국어), “수자-닌네”, “아이야-포파이야”(독 일어)처럼 자장가에는 아이를 흔들어 재울 때에 사용되는 요운(搖韻)이 크게 발달되어 있다. 자장가에는 삶의 애환과 비인도적인 내용(“검은 민속지혜”)도 드러나 있다. 동요의 선율적 기초는 무반음 펜타토닉이며, 원초적 모티브는 g1-e1이 되는데, “뻐꾹3도”로도 불리는 이 음 정으로 동요가 시작되기도, 마감되기도 한다(순환개념 내재). 따라서 이것은 “핵음정”, “유아 종지”, “진행형 종지”, “동요음형”등으로 불릴 수 있겠다.

In the world of children are poetry, singing and playing united. They have a common origin. The lullaby that reminds normally of the loving care of mothers and nurses with a rapturous fantasy world, also exposes the difficult situations of a mothers' everyday life which is always under time pressure. The lullaby of ancient life is preserved in fragments. The music of children's songs are based on the anhemitonic pentatonic, the core of the so-called Cuckoo mush(g1-e1) forms. The sequence of sounds that young children can learn most easily is g1-e1-a1-c1-d1-f1-b1(the octave c2 can come to c1 or d1, or last). The core interval G-E can be described differently, as a natural product of cucko "Cuckoo mush", as the final shape of some children's songs, "Infant cadence", as an infinite repeatability "changing circuit" and as a means of expression of Romanticism from the Romanticist, "Children's song cliché".
