본 논문은 『컬러 퍼플』에 드러나는 종교적 태도를 에코페미니즘의 관점에서 분석한 것이다. 이 작품에는 서구 백인 남성 중심의 종교적 태도가 가난한 흑인여성들을 구원에 이르게 하지 못한다는 인식이 깔려있다. 이들이 구원을 이루기 위해서는 자신들을 소외시키는 백인남성 중심의 위계적 이분법에 근거한 기독교적 전통을 극복해야 한다. 강간당하고 학대당하며 존엄한 인간으로서의 권리를 포기하며 살아야 했던 흑인 소녀 씰리가 매달리는 신에게 편지쓰기는 그녀의 무력한 삶을 되돌리지 못하고 그녀의 고립을 강화할 뿐이다. 씰리가 존엄하고 주체적인 삶을 회복하기 위해서는 그녀를 해방시킬 수 있는 종교적 태도가 필요하다. 그녀는 백인남성의 형상을 한 신의 이미지에서 벗어나 자연에 깃든 영을 관조하며 자아의 해방을 이루고, 육체와 정신을 아우르는 성스러움의 가치에 눈을 뜬다. 또한 그녀를 포함한 여성공동체는 서로를 보살피고 사랑을 부어줌으로써 여성과 그들이 함께하는 남성의 해방을 이루어 공동체를 복원한다. 이들의 독립과 해방은 위계적 이원론을 부정하고 다양성을 인정하며 생명체의 애정 어린 상호작용에 근거한 에코페미니즘의 종교적 태도에 기반한다.

This paper aims to analyze the religious attitude in The Color Purple from ecofeministic point of view. Ecofeministic perspective focuses on the interconnectedness of living things, the diversity of universal life while refusing to accept oppressive dualism based on the hierarchical order. This paper argues that women characters’ ecofeministic religious viewpoints such as pantheism, self-reliant interpretation of God, and sympathetic attitude toward all the living things are important force in restoring their selfhood. In a letter toward God, Celie confesses her sadness and loneliness. However, God in an image of a white man gives no response and consolation to her. She is suffered by abusive black men. She was raped by her stepfather and got whipping from her husband. Owing to other black women characters’ sympathetic understanding and help, Celie overcomes self-abasement and tries to achieve an independent way of life. The pantheism, restoration of the body, and sisterhood give black women the liberation of soul and independence of whole self.
