The Statues of Amitabha Buddha Triad at Daeungjeon Hall and the Statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva at Wontongbojeon Hall of Cheongryeonsa Temple were opened and investigated the Eclosed Relics. Cheongryeonsa Temple was originally located in Wangsimni, Seoul, until 2010 when it was moved to its current location (Yangju).
According to the dedicatory inscriptions, the wooden Statues of Amitabha Buddha Triad at Daeungjeon Hall were crafted by master monastic sculptor Rokwon(鹿苑) and five assistant sculptors including Injong(印宗), Dowoon(道云), Yugyeong(唯敬), Sawoon(思運), Seongshim (性諶) in 1670. These statues were re-glided in 1913 and 2000, respectively.
Even in the midst of suffering from the continuous famine and outbreaks of epidemic in the latter half of 17thcentury, it was especially severe in 1670(11thyear of King Hyeonjong) and 1671. It is believed that the Statues of Amitabha Buddha Triad of Cheongryeonsa Temple were produced in this background.
It turned out that the Statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva at Wontongbojeon Hall of Cheongryeonsa Temple was originally produced and enshrined as the left-hand side attendant statue of the Statues of Amitabha Buddha Triad at the Jijangam Hermitage (Mt. Palyeongsan, Heungyang-hyun) of Neunggasa Temple(Goheung, Jeollanam-do) in 1651. This statue was re-glided in 1940.
With the characteristics of sculptural style and the record of production time in dedicatory inscriptions, althogh the name of its producer is not clear, this Avalokitesvara statue is likely to be created by sect members of monastic sculptors Eungwon(應元)-Inkyoon(印均) group. Especially, monastic sculptor Samin(三印), who played active roles in producing Buddhist sculptures in that region at that time, is noticed.
Cheongryeonsa Temple had close association with royal family. Hong Hyunju (洪顯周), the son-in-law of King Jeongjo, and his grandson participated as major supporters in rebuilding of the Main Buddha Hall in 1854. In addition, Ladies of Court (especially Sanggoong) supported Cheongryeonsa Temple in production of Painting of Amitabha Buddha and Painting of the King of Sweet Dew in 1880.
In late Joseon dynasty, many of Buddhist statues were moved to the Royal Family involved temples from other places around the country.
There is considerable reason to believe that the movement of the Statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva from the Jijangam Hermitage of Neunggasa Temple to this temple is because of the involvement of Royal Family in supporting Cheongryeonsa Temple.
