이 연구는 위험(危險)과 기회(機會)를 동시에 지니고 있는 위기(危機)의 시대 상황 속에서 ‘인구절벽(demographic cliff)’의 인구구조 변화와 고령화의 의미를 위험과 기회라는 상호 차별적 시각을 통해서 다시 한번 바라봄으로써 인구 문제를 해결하려는 반응적 차원의 접근(reactive approach)을 넘어서 당면 과제를 해결할 수 있는 새로운 환경을 만들어내는 주도적 차원의 접근(proactive approach)을 시도하였고, 이후 평생배움의 품격(品格)을 갖추고자 미래지향적인 실천 과제들을 모색해 보았다. 이를 위해, 기존의 경제적, 복지적, 사회문화적 차원의 대책과 사적 처치를 넘어서는 사회적 해법의 필요성을 해외 사례를 통해 살펴보았고, 궁극적으로 각자의 인식 전환과 더불어 함께 사는 사회를 이루려는 용기 있는 선택을 제시하였다. 지금 이 시대는 4차 산업혁명의 확산으로 무한변화와 불확정성이 확정된 시대다. 확실하게 ‘정해진 미래’라고는 단지 모든 것이 불확실하다는 사실만이 확실한 시대다. 이런 상황 속에서 배우는 이가 할 수 있는 일은 오직 배우는 것이다. 배우고 또 배우고 다시 배우는 일이다. 배운다는 것은 하루하루 사는 것이기에, 그 어떤 커다란 목표를 향해 진력하는 것이면서 동시에, 오늘 하루, 지금 이 시간에 최선을 다해서 살아있고 살아내며 살아나가는 것이다. 하루하루 숨 쉬며 행복하게 살아가는 것이고 살아주는 것이다.

As the one of the worldwide phenomena, the change of population structure and reducing in fertility rate happen in many countries. Especially in Korea, the population aging has an enormous effect on the economic, social, cultural situation. Rapid changing of population structure and aging in Korea is faster than any other country. In 2017, Korea entered into ‘the aged society’ in which the 65 year-over-proportion is more than 14% of total national population. This study re-explored the meaning of the aging and the changing of population structure under the situation of demographic cliff in view of proactive approach rather than reactive approach, and proposed the social solutions beyond the personal actions. After all, it is necessary to choose the courageous choice and to reform the consciousness for the purpose of establishing the sustainable development society.
