대학 교양교육에서 한문 교과목은 유의미한 가치를 수반하며 광범위한 영역에서 그 진가를 발휘한다. 그러나 시대의 변화에 발맞추지 못하고 기존의 방법만을 고수한다면 결국 존폐의 위기를 피하기 어려울 것이다. 이에 본고는 서강대학교 교양 한문 수업에 대한 전반적인 검토와 분석을 토대로 효과적인 교수법을 모색하고자 하였다. 이러한 작업은 자칫 개별 학교의 사례로만 인식될 가능성이 있으나, 우리 대학 교양교육의 전반전인 문제로 확대되기에 충분하다는 점에서 시사점이 있으리라 본다.
먼저 우리는 지금의 대학 현장에서 학생들의 기본적인 한문 실력의 부재를 인정하고 그 학생들 간의 편차 또한 심화되고 있는 현상을 직시해야 한다. 또한 지속적으로 유입되는 유학생들을 위한 새로운 교과과정의 편재 역시 시급함을 인식할 필요가 있다.
논의의 결과, 외국어로서의 한문 교육이 교강사가 주도하는 획일적인 교수법에서 벗어나, 학습자의 적극적 '참여'와 동기부여를 이끌어내는 '활동' 중심의 수업으로 이행되어야 함을 강조하였다. 그리하여 학습자의 학업성취도를 반영한 수준별 수업 모델을 제안하고, 여기에 부합하는 교양 한문 교재의 필요성과 학생의 참여와 소통을 이끌어내는 수업 방법 등의 방안을 살펴보았다.

In university liberal arts education, Chinese class lessons have meaningful value and excel in a wide range of areas. However, if we can not keep up with the changes of the times and stick to the existing methods, we will have difficulty in avoiding the crisis of dwelling. Therefore, this study sought the effective teaching method based on the general examination and analysis of Sogang Univ. Although this work may be recognized only as an example of individual schools, it seems to be sufficient to expand to the first half of liberal arts education at our university.
First, we must acknowledge the absence of basic Chinese language skills in the current university field and face the phenomenon that the variation among students is deepening. It is also necessary to acknowledge the urgency of establishing a new curriculum for international students who are continually influx.
As a result of the discussions, it is effective to study Chinese texts as a foreign language by focusing on 'activities' that lead to active 'participation' and motivation of learners, away from the uniform teaching method led by professors. Thus, we proposed a level-specific class model reflecting the academic achievement of learners. We also examined the necessity of the Chinese textbook and the teaching methods that require student participation.
