하디가 인식한 신이란 그 존재가 회의적이거나 존재한다 하더라도 인간사에 관심이 없거나 오히려 적대적인 존재이다. 『쥬드』는 이상적 신의 부재에 근원 한 염세주의 사상과 죽음의 문제를 인물들의 관계를 통해 재현함으로써 인간사 의 잔혹한 현실을 형상화한다. 하지만 상세한 텍스트 분석은 이 작품이 비극의 틀 안에서 아이러니에 의해 형성되는 희극성을 지닌 작품이라는 점을 드러낸다. 대조의 양상에서 형성되는 희극성은 현실과 이상의 대조로 인한 인물간의 대립 과 삶의 부조리를 상징적으로 재현한다. 이점에서 텍스트에 내포된 희극성은 독자로 하여금 희극과 비극의 모호한 경계선 위에서 작품의 비극적 의미를 더욱 효과적으로 인식하도록 하는 장치로서 작용한다. 결국 『쥬드』에 나타나는 비극성 속의 희극성은 희극적 완화(comic relief)로서 극적 효과를 높인다. 희극적 완 화의 효과는 작품에 나타나는 단순한 개인의 비극이라는 주제의 측면뿐 아니라, 이상적 신의 부재로 인한 냉혹한 우주 속에서의 인간의 삶과 죽음, 그리고 현실 의 부조리라는 비극적 효과를 강화시키며 작품의 비극성을 끊임없이 재음미하게 하는 역할을 한다.

Pessimism from the absence of ideal God is the central motif of Jude the Obscure and form the intellectual background for it. For Hardy personally and in the context of Jude, God’s existence is doubtful, and ever were God’s existence proven, God is not interested in human life and even hostile to his creatures. This God results in the absurdity of human society and in Jude’s miserable death, by which Jude is considered a typical tragedy. A close examination, however, reveals that Jude is a novel with comic aspects concealed in its tragic frame. The comic aspects of Jude are formed by the irony implied in the tragic text. The comedy in the frame of tragedy makes Jude’s readers stand on the ambiguous border between tragedy and comedy, thus experiencing the irony the comic aspects create. Jude’s comic aspects as comic relief increase the effect of tragedy, therefore not only reinforcing the tragic theme but also highlighting the absurdity of human life originating from the absence of ideal God.
