This study aims to optimize the cochlea-inspired artificial filter bank (CAFB) using El-Centro seismic waveforms and test its performance through a shaking table test on a two-span bridge model. In the process of optimizing the CAFB, El-Centro seismic waveforms were used for the purpose of evaluating how they would affect the optimizing process. Next, the optimized CAFB was embedded in the developed wireless-based intelligent data acquisition (IDAQ) system to enable response measurement in real-time. For its performance evaluation to obtain a seismic response in real-time using the optimized CAFB, a two-span bridge (model structures) was installed in a large shaking table, and a seismic response experiment was carried out on it with El-Centro seismic waveforms. The CAFB optimized in this experiment was able to obtain the seismic response in real-time by compressing it using the embedded wireless-based IDAQ system while the obtained compressed signals were compared with the original signal (un-compressed signal). The results of the experiment showed that the compressed signals were superior to the raw signal in response performance, as well as in data compression effect. They also proved that the CAFB was able to compress response signals effectively in real-time even under seismic conditions. Therefore, this paper established that the CAFB optimized by being embedded in the wireless-based IDAQ system was an economical and efficient data compression sensing technology for measuring and monitoring the seismic response in real-time from structures based on the wireless sensor networks (WSNs).

In this study, SMG(Smart Material with Grease) was developed, which was improved the precipitation minute particle in grease during long term standstill. Also, small-sized cylinder damper equipped with an electromagnet in a piston was developed for using a performance evaluation of the damper with SMG and the dynamic load test, and damping force using Power model and Bingham model was derived in order to compare to the result of that of the damper. The data obtained from the dynamic load test were analyzed and plotted, and then a dynamic range was calculated to evaluate the usability of the damper with SMG. The performance of the damper with SMG was compared to the damping forse derived from the Power and Bingham model. The result of this evaluation shown that the usability of SMG damper was demonstrated by this test as a semi-active controlling equipment of small-sized damper.

This research focuses on developing the Smart material with Grease adopted as a base oil to overcome a particle deposition caused by the MR fluid consisting of a silicon, which maximizing the characteristics and advantage of the MR fluid. By adopting the SMG fluid to a shear damper, this paper aimed to evaluate the control performance of it according to the variation of intensity of electric current(0 A, 0.5 A, 1.0 A, 1.5 A, 2.0 A, 2.5 A) and frequency(0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, 2 Hz). Subsequently, the usability of the SMG damper was analyzed by comparing the dynamic model of it to that of the other types of dampers(Power(Involution) Model, Bingham Model). As a result, DR, the performance indicator of semi-active damper, shows approximately 5 in a condition of 2 Hz. Also while confirming the excellent performance like the Power and the Bingham model, it raises the possibility to exploit it as the semi-active damper.

In the case where a MR-damper is employed for vibration control, it is important to decide on how much control capacity should be assigned to it against structural capacities (strength and load, etc). This paper aims to present a MR-damper's control capacity suitable for the capacities of the structure which needs to be controlled. First, a two span bridge was built equipped with a MR-damper, which constitutes a two-span MR-damper control system. Then, inflicting an earthquake load on the system, a basic experiment was performed for vibration control, and a simulation was also carried out reflecting specific control conditions such as MR-damper and rubber bearing. The comparison of the results against each other proved their validity. Then, in order to calculate an optimal control capacity of the MR-damper, structural capacity was divided into eleven cases in total and simulated. For each case, an additional load of 30 KN was inflicted everytime, thereby increasingly strengthening structural capacity. As a result of the study, it was found that the control capacity of MR-damper of 30 KN was safely secured only with lumped mass of more than 150 KN(case 6). Therefore, it is concluded the MR-damper showed the best performance of control when it exerted its capacity at around 20% of structural capacity.

If the MR fluid damper does not work, the magnetic powder (carbonyl iron powder) will sediment. To overcome this problem, we developed an EMR (Enhanced Magneto Rheological Fluid) fluid and evaluated control performance. For the dynamic load test using MR fluid and EMR fluid was conducted to evaluate control power and DR (Dynamic Range). In the damper performance test, the current was tested at intervals of 0.5A from 0.0A to 2.5A, and the control power of the EMR fluid was 84% compared to the control power of the MR fluid, The DR of the EMR Damper was 7.5. When the DR is 5.0 or higher, it is generally used as a semi-active control device. Therefore, the EMR fluid has proved its usability as a semi-active control device by showing 7.5 DR to 76% control performance of existing MR damper.

This research is an experimental study attempting to use MR-dampers to control the complex behavior of multi-span bridge structures due to external loads such as seismic loads. For the purposes of this study, the model of components in each structure is identified, and then based on the results, a simplified system of the structure is derived. The performance of MR-dampers for complex behavior control is evaluated separately, according to the self-performance of MR-dampers and according to the performance based on applications of control algorithms. Based on the simplified system, Lyapunov control algorithm and Clipped-optimal control algorithm are applied. As a result, MR-damper is proven to be effective in the complex behavior control of multi-span bridge structures.

This study aimed to simulate the complex behavior of structures and predict test results. For this, the leading nonlinear model ‘Bouc-wen model’ was used, and rubber bearing and MR-damper were investigated. While seismic load was being applied, complex behavior of continuous structures was simulated. To test simulation performances, in addition, a seismic response test of the model structure was conducted using shaking table. Then, each structure’s displacement data were compared to simulation results. This study found that nonlinear model-based simulation results were mostly matched with test results, and they are applicable to the prediction of test results.

This study attempted to assess performances of adopted MR-damper to control the complex behavior caused by the interaction of independent continuous structures. For this, MR-damper (30kN) was designed and fabricated, and the MR-damper model was investigated using the Nonlinear Bingham Plastic Damper (NBPD). To assess experimental performances, a control test on the model structure was performed while El-centro 150% of seismic load was being applied. Then, MR-damper was placed between two independent structures to have it control independent displacement and complex behavior between the two structures. This study found that MR-damper is effective in controlling complex behavior of structures.

This paper aims to prove the effectiveness of MR damper as a smart control device when controlling the earthquake invoked transverse vibration of a two-span simple bridge. Applying a 40% of Kobe earthquake and a 120% of El-centro on a target structure, experiments were performed under two conditions: passive on (current on) and Lyapunov control algorithm embedded. MR damper's control performance was analyzed and contrasted under each different condition. It was concluded that MR damper was effective in controlling the vibration of the bridge.

This paper aims to assess the structural damage caused by fatigue and random impact load using a statistical pattern recognition technology. For experimental studies, a model of cable-stayed bridge was built, and a shaker was to inflict load on the model. Data for damage detection were obtained from the signals of the model on which repetitive load and earthquake load were imposed. Applying the statistical pattern recognition technology which constitutes a control chart by using Mahalanobis distance, a commonly used method for the measurement of statistical distance, we preliminarily assessed structural damage. On the basis of the damage assessment, we developed a Improved Mahalanobis Distance(IMD) to be applicable to a cable-stayed bridge which was damaged by random impact load. Then, we evaluated its performance for the assessment of structural condition. The evaluation showed that the control chart.
