Caldecott medal winners have been recognized as best picture books, and they become one of the most predominantly selected literary works for children. Impacts they have on children’s emotional, social, and linguistic development are well-recognized in various areas such as literacy, literature, and sociology. As educational philosophies embedded in Caldecott medal winners may contribute to their ‘didactic’, sociocultural, and linguistic impacts, this study explores what educational philosophies are embodied in 85 Caldecott medal winners from 1938 to 2022. It classifies them in terms of five major educational philosophies (progressivism, essentialism, perennialism, existentialism, and postmodernism including multiculturalism, feminism, ecology, and metafictive devices). Finally, it traces their prevailing trends from the chronological order in which they are introduced. The findings of this study are as follows: 1) Some educational philosophies such as essentialism and multiculturalism have appeared most frequently while perennialism and progressivism are no longer prevalent modes presented in Caldecott winners; 2) The changes in overall chronological flows of educational philosophies are made from essentialism to postmodernism, especially promoting picture books of metafictive devices. This study assumes that using appropriate Caldecott winners that can meet children’s different educational needs would better result in their emotional, sociocultural, and linguistic development.

This study explores solutions for the problems of the current secondary English teacher selection test in Korea. The study was performed in the form of survey including a total of 557 participants, among whom were professors teaching at the departments of English education, students majoring English education, English teachers who had taken the selection test, test-takers of the test, and public officials in charge of English education in the offices of education. The questionnaire consisted of 29 questions which were designed to elicit the participants' perception or belief about the test itself, the relationships between the test and the curricula of the department, the test-making process, and the first stage of the selectional process. Analyzing the results of the survey, the present study proposes possible solutions for the problems regarding the question types of the test, the proportions of each field of the major, the curricula of the department of English in the college of education, and the test-developing and grading process.

텍스트 유형(text types)이 지닌 고유한 수사학적 구조와 특징이 학습자가 텍스트를 처리하는데 있어서 학습자의 인지, 기억, 학습 방법, 태도에 미치는 영향이 매우 큼에도 불구하고 어떤 텍스트 유형을 제공했을 때 더 효과적인 영어 학습이 이루어 질 수 있는가에 대한 연구는 매우 미흡하다. 이에 본 연구는 고등학생 148명을 대상으로 실험 수업을 실시해서 텍스트 유형에 따른 읽기 학습의 효과를 어휘 기억력과 학습자의 정의적 측면에서 조사하였다. SPSS WIN 12.0을 이용하여 통제집단과 실험집단을 비교분석 하였는데, 텍스트 유형에 따른 단·장기 어휘기억 회상량 비교는 독립표본검정(T검정)을 통해 그리고 텍스트 유형별 어휘 학습 결과는 이원배치 분산분석(2-Way ANOVA)을 통해 알아보았다. 조사 결과, 서사적 텍스트가 설명적 텍스트에 비해 단기 어휘 기억에는 별 영향을 미치지 못했으나 장기 기억 측면에서 더 좋은 학습효과를 가져왔음을 확인 하였다. 또한 학습자의 어휘 능숙도가 낮은 경우 서사적 텍스트를 활용한 어휘 수업을 한 경우에 설명적 텍스트를 활용하여 학습한 경우보다 어휘 기억의 평균 차에 있어 상대적으로 긍정적인 효과를 보였으며, 하위 학습자의 경우 서사적 텍스트를 활용한 어휘 학습이 정의적 영역에 고르게 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 텍스트 유형 기반 중등 영어 교육의 필요성뿐만 아니라 교과서 및 교과 구성과 관련하여 새로운 관점을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
