        Fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda) is a major pest worldwide, and since its first domestic invasion was confirmed in 2019, its damage has been steadily increasing in crops such as corn until recently. In order to provide basic data for the management of FAW, we conducted a comparison of host preference and nutritional composition analysis of corn varieties. A total of 12 varieties of corn were selected for the experiment. To investigate the preference among the varieties, we examined the host preferences at the population level and the individual level, and found no statistically significant differences. In the population-level experiment, the highest damage rate was observed for Saekso 4 and the lowest for Heukgeom 2. In the individual-level experiment, the highest damage rate was found for Kangilok and the lowest for Oryun 2 when using leaves, and the highest for Saekso 1 and the lowest for Dreamok when using stems. As a result, the population-level and individual-level results were not consistent, suggesting that FAW's corn variety preference is not clear and may vary depending on various conditions such as corn tissue. Composition analysis of the 12 varieties showed no correlation between composition and FAW preference among the varieties, and considering the feeding behavior of FAW, which are highly polyphagous, it is recommended to control FAW as early as possible to improve control effectiveness.

        We report the development of new anthocyanin-rich grain corn hybrid variety ‘Saekso 2’. The seed parent, HA3 and the pollen parent, HA4 was developed from breeding materials collected from China in 2008 and from Canada in 2000, respectively. The hybrid was made in the winter of 2010/2011 and evaluated in Hongcheon for 3 years. After evaluation, the selected variety was named ‘Saekso 2’ and was approved for a variety registration in 2017. Anthocyanin content of Saekso 2 in grain was 685 mg/100g and was much higher than that of Saeko 1(0mg/100g). Since regional tests was conducted in only Gangwon province, it is recommended only in that region for commercial cultivation. For the highest content of anthocyanin, it is best to harvest grains at around 45 days after silking. Saekso 2 is the first hybrid bred specifically for processing for high anthocyanin production.

        This study was carried out to create new popcorn variety. ‘G-Popcorn’ was made by single crossing with two inbred lines, the seed parent, GP3, and the pollen parent, GP4. The hybrid was made in 2009 and selected in 2014 after investigating characteristics for three years from 2012 to 2014. ‘G-Popcorn’ was evaluated on 2 or 3 places in Gangwon-do for three years. ‘G-Popcorn’ showed higher lodging tolerance and popping volume in contrast to the check variety ‘Oryunpopcorn’. The plant height is 213cm indicating 5cm lower than that of ‘Oryunpopcorn’. Also, ration ear height of plant height of ‘G-Popcorn’ is 59%. The weight of 100 seeds was 15.5g, similar to that of ‘Oryunpopcorn’. The popping volume of ‘G-Popcorn’ was about 28.3㎤/g, higher than 25.0㎤/g of ‘Oryunpopcorn’. The yield of ‘G-Popcorn’ was 467kg/10a in regional yield trials for three years, which was 7% higher than that of ‘Oryunpopcorn’.

        This study was carried out to create new waxy corn variety using anthocyanins germplasm including 13 ornamental maize stocks, purple corn and two parental lines of Mibaek2. First, we made anthocyanin husk population for sustainable breeding from 13 ornamental stocks for 6 years from 2001 and then crossed purple corn with a dark purple kernel in 2007. We crossed this hybrid with two parental lines of Mibaek2, a good edible quality waxy corn, in 2007/2008 dry season nursery for additional breeding in Thailand. The anthocyanin-rich waxy lines derived from these hybrids were self-fertilized seven times and made single cross hybrids until 2011. These hybrids were evaluated on 2 or 3 places in Gangwon-do for next two years. One selected elite hybrid was named Cheongchunchal and applied for registration of new waxy corn variety in March 2014. Total anthocyanins content is zero in Mibaek2, 737 in Miheugchal, 18,809 mg/kg in Cheongchunchal. This variety is meaningful as health food and high-value industrial material.

        A new soybean variety, ‘Joongmo 3009’ (Milyang 222) was developed at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2012. ‘Joongmo 3009’ was released by pedigree selection from the cross between ‘Cheongja 2(Milyang 121)’ and ‘Daemangkong’. It has determinate growth habit, white flower, brown pubescence, brown pod color, green seed coat, green cotyledon, spherical seed shape, oval leaf shape and large seed size (29.3 grams per 100 seeds). It was late 16 days in maturing date than the check cultivar ‘Cheongjakong’. The average yield of ‘Joongmo 3009’ was 2.91 ton per hectare, which was higher 36 percentage than the check variety, in the regional yield trials carried out in three adaptable locations of Korea from 2010 to 2012. The number of breeder’s right is ‘5474’

        With the economy development, people have an increasing demand for meat and eggs. Hence the market demand for cereal crop keeps increasing. maize is the major crop to meet the conditions of market demand. As a part of the Golden Seed Project, we are planning to develop maize varieties for adaptation in Southern Asia, especially in India. This project was started at 2013 and has been collaborated with Nongwoo Bio Co. Our project is based on overseas maize breeding in Bangalore, India. At first year, we tested 40 maize hybrids to investigate adaptability, yield capacity, and growing characteristics. Planting materials for this test were developed and selected in Cambodia by researchers of Maize Research Institute. Growing performance is usually quite different by the growing area and seasons, but some of our materials have shown good adaptability and yield at dry season in Southern India. 13IN07 was selected by yield and grain color, 13IN39 was selected by yield and plant type. These two selected hybrids were applied to regional test controled by Indian Council of Agricultural Research in India. We will see how our hybrids adapt in various regions in India, assess how other tested hybrids perform in those regions, and compare each other. We may also expect one of the selected hybrids can be a candidate variety for some regions in India and we will continuously select good hybrids and develop new varieties in India.

        Maize breeding is mainly divided by two steps; line development and hybrid selection. Line development is very important procedure to make good hybrids and this line development in Korea is fully depend upon conventional methods like pedigree selection, back-cross, etc. For development of pure line, we have to do self-pollination for at least seven cycles. This line development system is tedious, labor-intensive, and time-consuming procedure. Doubled Haploid technology for maize is a new system to develop inbred lines within short period and many maize research institutes in foreign advanced countries have been actively using this technology. Using Doubled Haploid technology, we can greatly reduce the period of line development and strengthen maize research ability in Korea. Key requisite for Doubled Haploid breeding is possession of inducer lines which can produce haploid when source population is crossed with them. Maize Research Institute in Gangwon Province secures the right of using inducer lines and is trying to introduce Doubled Haploid breeding in Korea. Doubled Haploid breeding system is as follows; crossing between population and inducer, separation haploid seeds from F1 seeds, chromosome doubling, doubled plant management, self-pollination, seed multiplication, and assessment. We expect our breeding capacity will be progressed by introduction of Doubled Haploid technology. When this technology comes to combine with marker assisted selection, we can increase competitiveness against global institutes.

        ‘청아’는 내재해 다수성 장류용콩 신품종을 육성하기 위하 여 내도복, 다수성 품종인 ‘신팔당콩 2호’를 모본으로 1999년 도에 인공교배한 SS99505 조합으로 계통육성법으로 선발하였으며 계통명은 ‘강원 110호’이다. 꽃색은 백색이고 잎모양 은 난형이며, 종자모양은 구형이다. 종피색과 배꼽색은 황색 이고 백립중은 25.2 g으로 ‘태광’보다 2.4 g 무거운 대립이다. ‘태광’에 비하여 개화기는 7월 20일로 11일 빠르고 성숙기는 9월 30일로 5일 빨라 조숙종이면서도 등숙기간은 6일 길다. 특히, 도복에 강하며 불마름병과 바이러스에 강하다. 수량성 은 ‘태광’보다 생산력검정시험에서는 15% 증수하였고, 철원 등 4개 단작지역 적응성검정시험에서는 14% 증수하여 평균 종실수량이 ha당 2.72톤이다.

        ‘호반’은 대립이며 종자 특성이 우수한 GWS91을 모본으로 하고 Lipoxygenase 2와 3이 결핍된 ‘진품콩’을 부본으로1995년도에 인공교배를 하고 1996년부터 1997년까지 F1-F2양성하였다. 1998년부터 2003년도에 F3 이후 세대를 전개하며 계통육종법으로 선발한 GSL95102-2B-16-5-1-1계통으로계통명은 ‘강원5호’이다. ‘호반’의 주요특성으로는 유한신육형이며 꽃색은 자색이고 엽형은 난형이다. 입형은 편구형이고종피색은 황색, 제색은 황색이며 100립중은 29.0 g으로 대립이다. 개화기는 7월 23일, 성숙기는 10월 5일로 ‘진품콩 2호’와 유사한 중만생종이다. 종실 성분중 조단백함량은 39.0%로‘진품콩 2호’와 유사하였고, 조지방 함량은 18.5%로 다소 높았다. 기능성 성분중 아이소플라본 함량이 1,995 ㎍/g 로‘진품콩 2호’보다 25% 높았으며, 콩 비린내 유발 효소인 Lipoxygenase 2가 결핍되었다. 조단백 함량은 ‘진품콩 2호’와 유사하였으나, 조지방 함량은 다소 높았고, 메주와 청국장가공 시 발효정도와 풍미가 ‘진품콩 2호’보다 양호하였으며,청국장 수율도 높았다. 수량성은 2004년부터 2006년까지 3년간 실시한 지역적응시험결과 단작지에서 2.69 MT/ha로‘진품콩 2호’ 2.62 MT/ha 대비 3% 증수하였고, 이모작지에서는 2.60 MT/ha로 ‘진품콩 2호’ 2.59 MT/ha와 차이가 없었다.

        신품종 ‘검정5호’의 신육형은 유한신육형, 화색은 자색, 엽형은 환형이다. 모용 및 성숙기의 협은 갈색이며 종피색과 제색은 흑색이고 종실 자엽색은 황색이다. 입형은 구형으로 성숙기가 지나면 협의 자연개열이 다소 나타난다. 성숙기는 10월 4일로 ‘일품검정콩’보다 6일 늦으며, 경장은 60 cm로 6 cm 길고, 100립중은 23.2 g으로 ‘일품검정콩’ 보다 가볍다. 도복에 비교적 강하며, 포장 재배기간중의 모자이크 바이러스병은 다소 발생하였으나 괴저병에는 강하였으며, SMV 균주로 즙액 접종한 결과 바이러스병에 저항성을 보였다. 조단백 함량은 42.0%, 조지방 함량은 17.8%였다. 안토시아닌 색소 및 아이소플라본 함량은 각각 17,170 ㎍/g 및 1,194 ㎍/g였다. 두부 가공적성에서 두부수율은 ‘태광콩’과 비슷하나 비지무게는 높았고, 밝기 등 색택이 짙으며, 두부의 물성에서 씸힘성 및 경도는 다소 높았고, 탄력성은 다소 낮았다. 수량성은 지역적응시험 결과 전국 7개소 평균 ha당 2.46톤으로서 대조품종 ‘일품검정콩’에 비하여 16% 증수되었다. 적응지역은 전국이다.

        ‘대하 1호’는 대립 내재해 다수성 콩 신품종육성을 목표로, 내재해 다수성 ‘장엽콩’을 모본으로 대립 ‘화엄풋콩’을 부본으로 하여 교배한 것을 다시 다수성 ‘수원192호’를 모본으로 1997년도에 인공교배한 SS97214 조합으로 계통육성법으로 선발하였으며 계통명은 ‘밀양164호’이다. 꽃색은 백색이고 잎모양은 난형이며, 종자모양은 구형이고 종피색과 배꼽색은 황색이며 100립중은 25.4 g으로 ‘태광콩’에 비하여 2.5 g 정도 무거운 대립이다. ‘태광콩’보다 성숙기가 늦어 등숙기간이 2일이 길다. 도복에 강하며, 불마름병과 바이러스에 강하고, 내습성과 뿌리썩음병, 종실의 이병립율은 ‘태광콩’과 비슷하다. ‘태광콩’ 대비 수량성은 생산력검정시험에서 8 %, 지역적응시험에서는 5 % 증수하였으며, 전국 10개소 평균 종실수량은 ha당 2.62톤이다.

        ‘천상’은 대립 다수성 콩 신품종육성을 목표로, ‘수원190호’를 모본으로 ‘황금콩’을 부본으로 1998년에 인공교배하여, 1999-2000년도에 F1, F2 세대를 양성하고, F3부터 계통 전개하여 선발한 SS98206-41-1-3-1-1 계통으로 계통명은 ‘밀양176호’이다. 주요 특성은 유한신육형으로 화색은 백색이고, 엽형은 피침형이며, 모용색은 회색이다. 종자모양은 구형이고, 종피색과 제색은 황색이다. 개화기는 7월 26일로 ‘태광콩’보다 빠르고 성숙기는 3일 늦어 등숙기간이 7일이 더 길다. 경장은 76 cm로서 ‘태광콩’과 비슷하고 도복에 강하며, 100립중은 24.8 g으로 ‘태광콩’에 비하여 2.0 g 정도 무거운 대립이다. 불마름병에 저항성이며 콩모자이크바이러스와 내한발성은 강하였으나, 내습성과 뿌리썩음병에는 약하였으며, 탈립이 되지 않았다. 조단백질 및 조지방 함량은 ‘태광콩’보다 높았으며, 불포화지방산 비율은 ‘태광콩’과 비슷하였고 함황아미노산과 총 아미노산의 함량이 높았다. 두부수율은 낮으나 두부의 물성이 높았으며, 메주 가공적성은 ‘태광콩’과 비슷하였다. 수량성은 생산력검정시험 결과, 10% 증수되었으며, 지역적응시험에서는, 전국 10개소 평균 ha당 2.34톤으로서 대비품종인 ‘태광콩’ 대비 100%이었다.
