With an ultimate view to identifying abnormal releases of radioactive materials, a set of liquid and gaseous effluent data including unplanned or uncontrolled releases annually reported form the U.S. and Korean nuclear power plants were systematically analyzed. With the use of 21 years’ worth of annual discharge data for 7 radionuclide groups and 24 individual radionuclides, taken from a combined total of 1,610 reactor-years (RYs) covering 62 units of US Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) and 22 units of Korean PWRs, three novel formulas for estimating events were employed to calculate characteristic values. Applying these characteristic values derived from the event estimation formulas to events that transpired during 699 RYs in operational US PWRs revealed an enhanced predictive accuracy for abnormal events when considering individual radionuclides, as opposed to grouping them by radionuclide groups. This effect was particularly pronounced for specific events such as leaks caused by problems in Gas Decay Tanks, leaks in Steam Generator Power Operated Relief Valves, fuel defects, and leaks during spent nuclear fuel processing. In the case of Korean PWRs, fuel defects were identified as the primary events related to radioactive effluent releases. The methodologies and characteristic values derived from this study were applied to these events. The event estimation rate was lower in Korean compared to US PWRs, which can be attributed to the lower frequency of event occurrences in Korean PWRs (30 RYs) compared to the US. The approach proposed in this study may contribute to develop a methodology to identify implicit abnormal release data and correlate them with specific operational occurrences or events, which could improve the conventional practice of simply recording and reporting radioactive discharge data.

Notice of the NSSC No.2021-14 defines the term ‘Neutron Absorber’ as a material with a high neutron absorption cross section, which is used to prevent criticality during nuclear fission reactions and includes neutron absorbers as target items for manufacture inspection. U.S.NRC report of the NUREG-2214 states that the subcriticality of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in Dry Storage Systems (DSSs) may be maintained, in part, by the placement of neutron absorbers, or poison plates, around the fuel assemblies. This report mentions the need for Time-Limited Aging Analysis (TLAA) on depletion of Boron (10B) in neutron absorbers for HI-STORM 100 and HISTAR 100. Also, this report mentions that 10B depletion occurs during neutron irradiation of neutron absorbers, but only 0.02% of the available 10B is to be depleted through conservative assumptions regarding the neutron flux or accumulated fluence during irradiation, which supports the continued use of the neutron absorbers in the SNF dry storage cask even after 60 years of evaluated period. There are several types of commercially available neutron absorbers, broadly classified into Boron Carbide Cermets (e.g., Boral®), Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) (e.g., METAMIC), Borated Stainless Steel (BSS), and Borated Al alloy. While irradiation tests for neutron absorbers are primarily conducted during wet storage systems, there are also some prior studies available on irradiation tests for neutron absorbers during dry storage systems. For examples, there is an analysis of previous research on high-temperature irradiation test of metallic materials and identification of limitations in existing methodologies were conducted. Furthermore, an improvement plan for simulating the high-temperature irradiation damage of neutron absorbers was developed. In report published by corrosion society summarizes the evaluation results of the degradation mechanisms for Stainless Steel- and Al-based neutron absorbers used in SNF dry storage systems.

After the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, concerns have increased about radioactive releases from nuclear power plants (NPPs) into the environment. Analysis of annual radioactive effluent release reports (ARERRs) shows that from 2000 to 2020, abnormal releases of radioactive effluent occurred in 703 out of 1,323 Reactor·years in the United States, accounting for 53% of the total number of reactors in 63 PWRs. Furthermore, when examining incidents and malfunctions recorded in Korea’s Operational Performance Information System of Nuclear Power Plant (OPIS) during the same period, it can be estimated that abnormal releases occurred in 9 out of the 324 Reactor·years in PWRs and PHWRs. Meanwhile, database on radioactive releases from NPPs worldwide was collected, and events of abnormal/unplanned releases were investigated. Based on the data collected from 195 NPPs in 8 countries (South Korea, the United States, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Canada) over a period of 21 years, totaling 4,607 Reactor·years, a program called K-IRED (KHUIntegrated Radioactive Effluent Database) was developed using MS Access. Using K-IRED, three methodologies have been developed to predict abnormal events based on the annual radioactive releases for each NPPs and radionuclide (or radionuclide group). Three newly developed methodologies were applied to the 63 NPPs (1,323 Reactor·years) in the United States, categorized by radionuclides (or radionuclide groups). Assuming an increase in radioactive effluent due to abnormal events, the annual increase rate of radioactive effluent was calculated for each methodology and the results were analyzed. The optimal methodology among the three was derived, and the applicability of predicting abnormal events in other NPPs beforehand was examined. Therefore, by predicting abnormal or unplanned releases from NPPs to the environment in advance, it is possible to prevent accidents and reduce public concerns, as suggested by results of this study.

Yam is an important tuber crop nutritionally, socio-culturally, and an income generator for many Nigerian. This explains its high demand both locally and internationally, causing increased production as Nigeria leads world production with about 45.41 million metric tons annually. The peculiarity of yam production in Nigeria entails lower yield, high cost of production, and post-harvest losses. Yam produced in Nigeria falls far below the potential crop yield, therefore, it is essential to close these yield gaps through the provision of solutions to the different constraints that hamper sustainable yam production. Despite the challenges, there is still insufficient information on the impact of policies, weeds, pests, and diseases which constitute major constraints. Nigerian farmers mostly utilize indigenous cultural approaches to manage yam production. Their goal of production is to produce yam cultivars that are suitable mainly for food products leading to the neglect of other cultivars. Few selected institutions with a yam mandate have been working on improving the production of D. rotundata and D. alata through breeding yam cultivars suitable for consumption and resilient against pests and diseases. However, more extensive studies should focus on breeding programs for yam resilient under drought and flooding, with peculiar physicochemical properties that give unique textual qualities considered in pounded yam and other yam food products. In this review paper, the significance and limitations of yam production in Nigeria and her efforts to achieve sustainable production are extensively studied.

Maize is an important cereal crop widely grown in all of Nigeria’s agroecology based on its economic and food values. This has led to its optimum production with Nigeria ranking top 12th maize producer in the world. Presently, the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda is considered a potential threat to food security in Nigeria due to its devastating feeding pattern on maize and its wide host range. Its invasive and high dispersal nature enhances its spread from its first reported state (Oyo) in early 2016 to the entire 36 states of Nigeria by the year 2018. It accounts for averagely an estimated 34% or more yield reduction in Nigeria’s maize field, hence, a need for an efficient management approach. Although most farmers rely on the use of insecticide, it is found ineffective because of the inaccessible location of FAW in maize. This study was carried out to investigate the different management approaches adopted in Nigeria to control FAW and its impact on the insect pest population. Conventional measures such as planting improved seeds, avoidance of late planting, and polyculture to increase the natural enemy’s population have been used but with limited control of FAW. Maize lines with aflatoxin resistance or transgenic Bt-maize are found resistant to FAW. Botanicals such as neem extract lowered the percentage of leaf area damage, incidence of FAW larva infestation, and the number of larvae. It is difficult to curtail the menace of FAW through one control method, hence, the need for an integrated approach

Soybean is an important crop widely grown in the northern region of Nigeria for human and animal consumption. Commercial production of soybean in Nigeria has existed for eight decades. Current malnutrition and nutrient health problems in Nigeria warranted the introduction of high nutritive and affordable food sources such as soybean in the Nigerian diet. The high demand for soybean and its products has led to the rise in the cultivation of soybean in Nigeria. Although an increase in production has been recorded, the region of production has failed to achieve the potential yield per hectare. In improving soybean production in Nigeria, it is paramount to understand the factors that contribute to the process of production. This review paper provides information on factors affecting soybean production across the regions of production in Nigeria. The identified factors responsible for the yield gap include the impact of climate change on the agroecology shift, nutrient depletion and soil fertility, sowing date, the emergence of pests and diseases, and limited improved soybean cultivars. Adoption of improved soybean variety suitable in agroecology and sowing, at the appropriate sowing date by Nigerian farmers, can guarantee optimum soybean production. Further soybean breeding improvement studies are needed to provide more improved varieties with superior performance in Nigeria’s agroecology to achieve yield potential.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) refers to the possibility of changes in the discharge characteristics of radioactive effluents that are different from those during operation when a nuclear power plants (NPPs) are decommissioned. In addition, the IAEA recommends differentiated radioactive effluent management for each phase during decommissioning that reflects changes in discharge characteristics, and changes to authorization and program that are different from those in operation. Bonavigo et., al. estimated the discharge and dose of liquid and gaseous radioactive effluents based on the decommissioning plan of the Trino NPP in Italy during decommissioning, but there is a fundamental limitation in that actual data were not used. Kang and Cheong analyzed the discharge characteristics of radioactive effluents at each activities of decommissioning after permanent shutdown using actual data on radioactive effluents from the United States and Europe, and performed theoretical modeling of discharge characteristics during permanent shutdown. However, there are limitations in that only the emitted radioactivity was considered, the dose assessment was not taken into account, and the improvement methods for the differentiated monitoring program for each phase of decommissioning mentioned in the IAEA were not proposed. Most studies of radioactive effluents discharge from NPPs focus on normal operation, and studies of shutdown or decommissioned NPPs is very limited. Existing studies have not been extended to research on decommissioned NPPs, and there are limitations in that they do not consider the characteristics of decommissioned NPPs mentioned in the IAEA. Therefore, this study aims to improve the effluent monitoring program based on the analysis of the discharge characteristics NPPs that are permanently or long-term shutdown and the change in offsite dose to public. For this purpose, research was conducted on Kori Unit 1 and Wolsong Unit 1 in Korea, which were virtually permanently shutdown, and other long-term shutdown NPPs due to prolonged planned outage maintenance or replacement/repair of equipment in nuclear facility. The discharge characteristics of each radionuclide group, and further, the effect of radioactive effluent released to the environment on the offsite dose are analyzed in details.

The bacterial soft-rot disease is one of the most critical diseases in vegetables such as Chinese cabbage. The researchers isolated two bacteria (Pseudomonas kribbensis and Pantoea vagans) from diseased tissue samples of Chinese cabbages and confirmed them as being the strains that cause soft-rot disease. Lactic-acid bacteria (LAB), were screened and used to control soft-rot disease bacteria. The researchers tested the treatments with hypochlorous acid water (HAW) and LAB supernatant to control soft-rot disease bacteria. The tests confirmed that treatments with the HAW (over 120 ppm) or LAB (Lactobacillus plantarum PL203) culture supernatants (0.5 mL) completely controlled both P. kribbensis and P. vagans.

This study explores multiple variables of an OTT service for discovering hidden relationship between rating and the other variables of each successful and failed content, respectively. In order to extract key variables that are strongly correlated to the rating across the contents, this work analyzes 170 Netflix original dramas and 419 movies. These contents are classified as success and failure by using the rating site IMDb, respectively. The correlation between the contents, which are classified via rating, and variables such as violence, lewdness and running time are analyzed to determine whether a certain variable appears or not in each successful and failure content. This study employs a regression analysis to discover correlations across the variables as a main analysis method. Since the correlation between independent variables should be low, check multicollinearity and select the variable. Cook's distance is used to detect and remove outliers. To improve the accuracy of the model, a variable selection based on AIC(Akaike Information Criterion) is performed. Finally, the basic assumptions of regression analysis are identified by residual diagnosis and Dubin Watson test. According to the whole analysis process, it is concluded that the more director awards exist and the less immatatable tend to be successful in movies. On the contrary, lower fear tend to be failure in movies. In case of dramas, there are close correlations between failure dramas and lower violence, higher fear, higher drugs.
