Physical characteristics of PA (Polyamide) gill net and biodegradable gill net made by PBS (Polybutylene succinate) (mesh size 63mm, mesh thickness number 2, 2.5, 3) were analyzed to investigate catching efficiency of the biodegradable gill net for Pacific herring. Total 11 numbers of catching efficiency tests were carried out using commercial fishing vessel at Imwon port in Kangwon province from May to June 2013. The amount of catches were 1,535.7kg (18 species) through the catching efficiency tests and it is expected that the practicalization of biodegradable gillnet is possible because there is no difference for catches between PA gillnet and PBS gillnet. Catches of herring according to the thickness of net twine was the highest at No.2 and the thicker net twine tends to decrease the catches.

Physical characteristics of net filament were investigated to test the fishing capacity of gill nets due to the flexibility difference between nylon and biodegradable nets (PBS 95%+PBAT 5% and PBS 80%+PBAT 20%). In addition, a total of 16 fishing experiments were conducted in the coastal waters of Jeongja, Ulsan, from August 10 to October 20, 2011 and from September 11 to November 3, 2012. The test results showed that nylon net filament exhibited more flexibility than biodegradable net filament when they were wet. Accordingly, the longer submerged time, the more fishing capacity the nylon gill nets demonstrated in comparison with the biodegradable gill nets. A total of 16 species were caught in 2011 with the nylon gill nets (1,323 fishes, weighing 342,885g) and the biodegradable gill nets (958 fishes, weighing 236,857g). 15 species were caught in 2012 with the nylon gill nets (1,582 fishes, weighing 448,360g) and the biodegradable gill nets (1,431 fishes, weighing 406,590g). Thus catch weights and the number of fish caught produced by the nylon nets were 1.45 times and 1.38 times higher than those of the biodegradable nets produced in 2011, and 1.1 times and 1.11 times higher in 2012. A test on the target species, pointhead flounder (Cleisthenes pinetorum) has similar results. The flexibility of a net was proved to be related to the fishing capacity, and as a result, it is concluded that the higher flexibility, the higher fishing capacity.

There are many studies of the biodegradable net for fishing to prevent marine pollution in Korea and the snow crab gill nets is developed effectively. Recently, the biodegradable gill net for fishes is being developed. This study is the experiment of the catch characteristics for the biodegradable flounder gill net. The 8 experiments were carried out using the nylon gill net and the biodegradable gill net in from August to October, 2011 in the southern East Sea. The results obtained from the above approaches are summarized as follows; A total of 16 species was caught with most dominant species of Cleisthenes pinetorum followed by Liparis tanakai, Glyptocephalus stelleri, Buccinum striatissimum and Dasycottus setiger. A total of catch of the nylon net was 342,885g and that of the biodegradable net was 236,857g. Thus catch of the nylon net was 1.45 times more than that of the biodegradable net. The length composition of Cleisthenes pinetorum, caught by the biodegradable net was very similar to that of nylon. As a result of analysis on the effect of submerged time, small fish escaped more easily than large fish as the submerged time is getting longer. And catches of the biodegradable net was less than the nylon net's as higher as wave height. Wave height was more influential factor for fishing capacity than submerged time based on the results of a comparison between catch difference of two kinds of gill nets and catch characteristics.

The monofilament with 0.304mm of diameter was produced using a polybutylene succinate (PBS) resin, and a gill net was made by it. We investigated the impact of heat setting temperature on the mechanical properties, knot state and height of gill net. Heat treatment was carried out using the high pressure steam machine for 20 minutes at temperature of 55℃, 60℃, 70℃ and 75℃. Before heat treatment, the strength and elongation of PBS monofilament were estimated to be 48.1kg/mm2, 23.8% at unknot, 37.6kg/mm2, 18.8% at single knot, 26.6kg/mm2, 22.9% at double knot in dry condition, respectively. The strength and elongation of PBS monofilament with double knot were decreased as heat setting temperature increased, and the decreasing rate of strength was showed to be higher than that of elongation. It was not found any differences in strength and elongation of PBS monofilament yarn with double knot at the 65℃ and 70℃ of heat setting temperature by 5% significance of T-test, but there was a significant difference at the 70℃ and 75℃ of heat setting temperature. The net's height and length from leg to leg appeared no differences at the 70℃ and 75℃ of heat setting temperature. In results, it was investigated that the PBS monofilament gill net with the maximized physical properties could be manufactured at 70℃ of heat setting temperature using a high pressure steam machine for 20 minutes.

The mesh selectivity of a drift net for yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) was examined in field experiments with six different net mesh size (40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65mm) from April to December, 2008 in the coastal areas of Jeollanam-do in Korea. The total catch of 6,748 consisted of yellow croaker (n=6,310; 89.1% of total catch), common mackerel (n=158; 5.6%) and other species (n=280; 9.6%). The selectivity curve for yellow croaker was fit by the models of selectivity curve in SELECT method. The optimal mesh size for 50% retention for minimum landing size (191mm) of yellow croaker was estimated as 49.6mm-51mm by selectivity curves. And the bi-normal model for the selectivity curve was found to fit the data best.

For the optimal design of a shrimp pot to control the catch size and to reduce catch the small size shrimp, tank experiments were carried out to study the pot stability under water. Tank experiments were carried out to measure the drag with 4 kinds of model pots that have 50% selection on the individual of 25mm carapace length. The drag of each pot was measured every 10 times with changing the current speeds from 0.1m/s to 0.7m/s in 0.1m/s intervals and the pot attack angle from 0˚ to 90˚ in 15˚ interval in a flume tank. The relation between the current speed and drag was presented. The stability of pot was estimated using the drag data and the friction data of Kim et al. (2008b). The results showed that, the drag was shown lower as small as the projected area of pot depending on the current speeds and angles. The model pots were showed to slide on the seabed in case of rock at the current speeds 0.35-0.38m/s and the possibility of turn over at the current speeds 0.77-0.89m/s. In conclusion, the stability of a shrimp pot showed more stable as the pot of the lower the height and the smaller projected area on current.

In order to improve the breaking strength and elongation of Polybutylene succinate (PBS) monofilament, the monofilament was produced by blending PBS and Polybutlyne adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT). The PBS/PBAT blend monofilament was prepared by the melt spinning system, and the weight ratios of the compositions of PBS/PBAT was 100/0, 95/5, 90/10 and 85/15, respectively. The breaking strength, elongation, softness and crystallization of PBS/PBAT blend monofilament were analyzed by using a tensionmeter, softness measurement, X-ray diffractometer in the both dry and wet conditions. The PBS/PBAT blend monofilaments were spun in the take-up velocity of 1.19m/sec under the drawing ratio of 6.8:1 condition. The production volumes of PBS/PBAT blend monofilaments showed 20% less than that of Nylon. The breaking strength of PBS/PBAT blend monofilaments were decreased as PBAT contents increased, while elongation and softness were increased. In case of PBAT content were over 5%, the breaking strength, elongation and softness of PBS/PBAT blend monofilaments were not shown to increase in spite of increasing in PBAT contents. Based on these results, it was possible to make the monofilaments with the maximized physical properties when the PBAT contents at 5%.

Recently, Fishermen have required to expand the circumference of trap entrance for conger eel because it was difficult to take the catch out as well as to put the baits into. A series of fishing experiments was carried out in coastal areas of Tongyoung, Korea in 2008 and 2009 using the traps to describe the effect of the entrance size on the catch. The experimental traps (five types) were used in filed experiments with four types circumference size traps (140, 180, 220 and 260mm) with mesh size 22mm and another type was used the same one usually using in filed with mesh size 35mm (750mm circumference). The experiment results were, the conger eels of total length 35mm more or so were caught 85, 93, 142 and 176 individual by the experiment traps with mesh size 22mm as increase circumference size from 140mm to 260mm, respectively. And the small conger eels of the total length below 35mm to be prohibited to catch by law were caught 145, 160, 288 and 304 individual according to increase the circumference size of trap, respectively. In addition, in case of the trap with mesh size 22mm, bycatches were 230 - 260 individuals and much more than bycatches of the trap with mesh size 35mm. In conclusion, when we expand the circumference size of trap according to fishermen's requirement, we should review not only economic of fishery but also increasement the bycatch of non-target fishes and small size fishes.

In order to design the optimal escape vent for the coon strip shrimp pot, the tank experiments were conducted with the model pot of five different slit height and slit width, respectively. The optimal height and width of escape vent were determined to 20mm and 40mm by tank experiments, respectively. These were determined by the 50% selection carapace length which was denoted to 25mm in selectivity curve. The escape experiments were conducted to determine a number of escape vent with the original shrimp pot to be set the designed escape vent from 2 vents to 10 vents increasing at intervals of 2 vents in tank. The optimal number of escape vents denoted 8 vents. Therefore, to apply the escape vent in commercial shrimp pot will be efficient to reduce small size shrimps to catch.
