        The residual amount of fumigant was measured over time after fumigation on pine wilt disease infected Pinus koraiensislogs in the forests of Yeoncheon and Pocheon. Dimethyldisulfide (DMDS, 99.6%) was treated in large scale fumigation(100m3) in Yeoncheon and measured after removing tarpaulin cover in the 2 weeks of fumigation. DMDS was detectedat the highest concentration of 77.9 mg/kg in the 2nd week of treatment and decreased to 0.6 mg/kg in the 24th week.Metam-sodium (25%) was treated in small scale fumigation (1m3) in Pocheon and the amount of methylisothiocyanate(MITC) was measured after removing tarpaulin cover at each time of investigation. MITC was detected at the highestconcentration of 72.0 mg/kg in the 2nd week of treatment and then decreased to 7.0 mg/kg in the 24th week. However,unlike DMDS, MITC in the 12th week was detected at high concentration similar to the 1st week, indicating that thecontinuity of the sealing with tarpaulin would have a decisive influence on the residual amount change in fumigated logs.

        In this study, we isolated and identified an aggregation-sex pheromone from Monochamus saltuarius, the major insectvector of the pine wood nematode in Korea. Adult male of M. saltuarius produces 2-undecyloxy-1-ethanol, which is knownto be an aggregation-sex pheromone in other Monochamus species. We performed field experiments to determine the attractivenessof the pheromone and other synergists. More M. saltuarius adult beetles were attracted to traps baited with the pheromonethan to unbaited traps. Ethanol and (-)-α-pinene interacted synergistically with the pheromone. Traps baited with pheromone+(-)-α-pinene+ethanol were more attractive to M. saltuarius adults than traps baited with pheromone, (-)-α-pinene, or ethanol alone.Ipsenol, ipsdienol, and limonene were also identified as synergists of the aggregation-sex pheromone for M. saltuarius adults.

        We evaluated the repellent activity of 12 Apiaceae plant essential oils and their components against male and female adult German cockroaches, Blattella germanica, to find new natural repellents. Of the plant essential oils tested, ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi) and dill (Anethum graveolens) essential oils showed the most potent repellent activity against male and female adult German cockroaches. Of the compounds identified, carvacrol, thymol, and R-(-)-carvone showed >80% repellent activity against male and female adult German cockroaches at 0.2 mg/L air concentration. S-(+)-Carvone, (+)-dihydrocarvone, and terpinen-4-ol showed >70% repellent activity against male and female adult German cockroaches at 0.8 mg/L air concentration. Our results indicated that Apiaceae plant essential oils and their constituent have good potential as natural repellents against adult German cockroaches.

        The regional innovation center (RIC) has been closely linked with college or university of the region in the capacity of research collaboration and business activities. In this relationship, the role of college or university becomes utmost important especially in developing countries. This study intends to redirect the role of regional university in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The tasks for reformulating the agricultural university are associated with the curriculum, the capacity building of faculty, and the operation system of RIC. Finally, this paper suggests that the divided departments of the university should be merged to improve the quality of education and research. Also the university need to focus on extension for agri-business and strengthening lecturer’s competency for development of professional human capitals.

        Metam-sodium has been generally applied to control Pinus koraiensis, P. densiflora and P. thunbergii infected by pine wilt disease in the forest field of Korea. We determined the atmospheric concentration of nematocidal and insecticidal gaseous methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) and more volatile and toxic gaseous methyl isocyanate (MIC) in the metam-sodium fumigated fields depending on the distance from metam-sodium treated site, time and season by OSHA No. 52 method. Determined atmospheric MIC was below acute exposure limit (50 ㎍/㎥) and chronic exposure limit (1.0 ㎍/㎥) of EPA regulation in all detection point. In summer, the maximum of MITC and MIC was observed to 105.2 ㎍/㎥ in the 1st day and 0.41 ㎍/㎥ in the 4th day after metam-sodium treatment, respectively. On the other hand, in winter, the maximum of MITC and MIC was observed to 4.6 ㎍/㎥ in the 4th day and 0.52 ㎍/㎥ in the 5th day after metam-sodium treatment, respectively. Atmospheric concentrations of MITC and MIC were higher the closer to the metam-sodium treated site, but decreased below LOQ with distance (~ 50 m). This result showed that the reaction rate of metam-sodium to MITC is more affected by temperature and the translation rate of MITC to MIC is generally very low, regardless of season.
