        Currently, there is no definitive regulation for the appropriate frequency of data sampling in water distribution networks, yet it plays a crucial role in the efficient operation of these systems. This study proposes a new methodology for determining the optimal frequency of data acquisition in water distribution networks. Based on the decomposition of signals using harmonic series, this methodology has been validated using actual data from water distribution networks. By analyzing 12 types of data collected from two points, it was demonstrated that utilizing the factors and cumulative periodograms of harmonic series enables similar accuracy at lower data acquisition frequencies compared to the original signals.

        In this study, as the proportion of aged pipelines increases rapidly, in the event of an accident caused by corrosion and structural deterioration of metal pipes, appropriate overlay welding is applied in the field to partially repair it. The size of the base steel plate and the selection of a stable welding method were evaluated, and possible problems caused by the overlay welding were identified, and improvement measures were proposed. For the test, a new steel pipe coated with epoxy lining on the inner surface and polyethylene on the outer surface was subjected to a tensile test by processing the repaired specimen through overlay welding with a steel plate after artificial cracking, and structural safety was evaluated after repair. Furthermore, the influences of the size of the throat and the size of the steel plate were analyzed. As a result of the tensile test by dividing the repaired steel plate overlay into a constraint and non-constraint conditions, the tensile load was concentrated in the welded part and damage occurred in the welded part. It was found that the maximum load leading to breakage increases as the size of the welding throat increases. In addition, it was found that the resistance to load increased slightly as the size of the overlaid steel plate increased, but the effect was not significant, confirming the need for repair in consideration of the site conditions. As a result of evaluating the damage to the coating material on the back side of the welding, it was confirmed that the coating material on the opposite side of the welding burned black(epoxy) or was greatly deformed by heat(polyethylene). Therefore, it is necessary to secure structural stability through repainting, etc. in order to prevent damage to the coating material on the opposite side during overlay welding.

        Scale and rust generation in water pipes is a common phenomenon when cast iron water pipes have been used for a long time. A physical water treatment device is known among various means for suppressing rust in a water pipe, and a zinc ionization device for putting zinc metal into a pipe and emitting the zinc cation into water is one of such devices. This research measured the amount of zinc ion generated, which is known to exhibit an effect of inhibiting rust and scale generation in a pipe, and examined the scale and rust inhibition effect of the ionization device installed for ground or building water supply. In the case of distilled water, the concentration of zinc ion increased by circulating water in the ionization device several times, and it was verified to be hundreds of μg/L, and in the case of discharging ground or tap water, it was verified to be tens of μg/L. In addition, a verification pipe was installed to confirm the change inside the pipe before and after installation of the zinc ionization device, and the internal condition of the pipe was observed 3 months to several years after installation. It was confirmed that the corrosion area of the surface of the pipe was no longer increased by installing a corrosion inhibitor, and if the pipe was already filled with corrosion products, the amount of corrosion products gradually decreased every year after installation. The phenomenon of fewer corrosion products could be interpreted as expanding the space in the pipe due to the corrosion product as Fe2O3 adhered to the inner surface of the pipe and turned into a smaller black Fe3O4. In addition, we found that scale such as CaCO3 together in the corrosion by-products gradually decreased with the attachment of the ionization device.

        In this study, effects of five raw water quality parameters (turbidity, odor compounds caused by algae, filter clogging caused by algae, pH increase caused by algae, and organic matter) on improvements and operations costs of typical water treatment plant (WTP) were estimated. The raw water quality parameters were assumed the worst possible conditions based on the past data and costs were subsequently estimated. Results showed that new water treatment facilities were needed, such as a selective intake system, an advanced water treatment processes, a dual media filter, a carbonation facility, and a re-chlorination facility depending on water quality. Furthermore, changes needed to be made in WTP operations, such as adding powered activated carbon, increasing the injection of chlorine, adding coagulation aid, increasing the discharge of backwashed water, and increasing the operation time of dewatering facilities. Such findings showed that to reliably produce high-quality tap water and reduce water treatment costs, continuous improvements to the quality of water sources are needed.

        그동안 북한선교는 통일 담론에 휘둘려 제대로 된 선교전략을 세울 수 없었고, 혼재된 대북 관계와 북미 관계로 인해 이행할 수도 없었다. 북한선교는 자체의 정체성(일명: 상수)을 재정립하고 정치적 과제(일명: 변수)와 연관되지 않아야 가능하다. 북한선교의 변하지 않는 상수의 선교정체성과 변하는 변수의 배경을 분리해야 하는 것이 다. 그러면 비로소 통일 이전과 이후의 북한선교의 전략적 정책이 수립될 수 있을 것이다. 북한선교의 통일 이전의 전략은 복음의 직접 사역과 비즈니스 선교전략이다. 통일 이후에는 관계성을 중심으로 한 민족복음화 선교전략으로 이어져야 한다. 통일 이전과 이후에도 북한선교는 여전히 양 교회 간의 갈등과 대립, 오해와 비난 등으로 상당한 문제가 야기될 것이다. 통일 이후 북한선교는 민족복음화를 변곡점으로 해서 시작될 것이다.

        선박이 항구를 안전하게 입·출항 하기 위해서는 고려해야할 요소들이 많지만, 특히, 선박의 좌초 위험을 줄이기 위해 항구의 조석을 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 기존의 선행연구는 주로 조화상수를 찾고 분석하는 연구가 대부분이었으나, 타 수로국의 조석표상 조화 상수 분석 및 정확성에 관한 연구는 부족하였다. 본 연구는 인천, 군산, 여수, 부산, 울산 및 속초, 총 6곳의 항구를 대상으로, 실측정보를 기준으로 영국조석표와 한국의 조석표를 비교하였으며, 조석의 차이가 발생하는 원인을 찾기 위하여 조화상수를 사용하여 조고, 조시, 조 석형태수를 계산한 후 영국과 한국의 정보를 비교하였다. 실측정보와 조석표의 차이 분석 결과 대상 항구 모두 실제 조고와 조시가 차이 가 있었으며, 그 원인은 영국과 한국의 조화상수, 조석 기준값, 조석 형태수에서 차이가 있는 것을 발견하였다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 영 국 조석표에 우리나라 표준항을 추가해야 하며, 조석표를 만드는데 필요한 기준이 되는 조화상수가 지속적으로 최신정보로 업데이트 되 어야 하고, 영국 조석표 보다는 각 국가에서 제작하는 조석표가 더 정확하다는 것을 제시하고자 한다.

        In this paper the potential of the principal component analysis(PCA) technique for the application of detecting leaks in water pipe networks was evaluated. For this purpose the PCA was conducted to evaluate the relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model utilizing the recorded pipe flows and the recorded pipe leak incidents of a case study water distribution system. The PCA technique was enhanced by applying the computational algorithms developed in this study which were designed to extract a partial set of flow data from the original 24 hour flow data so that the effective outlier detection rate was maximized. The relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model and the recorded pipe leak incidents was analyzed. The developed algorithm may be applied in determining further leak detection field work for water distribution blocks that have more than 70% of the effective outlier detection rate. However, the analysis suggested that further development on the algorithm is needed to enhance the applicability of the PCA in detecting leaks by considering series of leak reports happening in a relatively short period.

        PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to identify the mechanism of road subsidence caused by damaged water and sewer pipes. METHODS: A series of soil chamber test using damaged water and sewer pipe models were conducted under various conditions. RESULTS : Characteristics of cavity expansion and collapse caused by damaged pipes were affected by the damaged location in the sewer pipe, the head on the water pipe, the distance between the damaged water pipe and outlet, and relative soil density. CONCLUSIONS: Sewer-pipe damage was considered a direct cause of road subsidence, and the cavity expanded discontinuously. When the outlet was located under the damaged water pipe, the cavity expanded in the water pipe’s direction, and collapse occurred above the pipe. However, when the outlet was located atop the damaged water pipe, the cavity expanded toward the outlet direction and resulted in a subsidence. Cavity expansion speed was affected by various conditions, such as the pipe’s water head, outlet position, distance between the damaged water pipe and outlet, and relative soil density. However, the cavity expansion shape did not affect factors, except for outlet position.

        N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a class of disinfection byproducts and a frequently detected nitrosamine with carcinogenic potentials. This review summarizes NDMA precursors, their formation mechanisms in chloraminated water, and mitigation strategies. Understanding the formation mechanism and characteristics of precursors is essential for developing a mitigation strategy. Dimethylamine (DMA), the most widely studied NDMA precursor, has an NDMA molar yield up to 3%. In comparison, a subset of tertiary amines, e.g., pharmaceuticals, generate up to 90% upon chloramination. Potent NDMA precursors, are characterized by their negative partial charge, low planarity values and molecular weight, and high bond length and pKa values. A nucleophilic substitution of tertiary amine on chloramine is a key reason for the high NDMA yield from the most potent NDMA precursors. The distribution and fate of NDMA in surface water, aquifers, and its formation in the distribution system can be mitigated through two strategies: (1) degrading or/removing NDMA after its formation and (2) pre-treatment of its precursor’s prior chloramination.

        Direct spring loaded pressure relief valve(DSLPRV) is a safety valve to relax surge pressure of the pipeline system. DSLPRV is one of widely used safety valves for its simplicity and efficiency. However, instability of the DSLPRV can caused by various reasons such as insufficient valve volume, natural vibration of the spring, etc. In order to improve reliability of DSLPRV, proper selection of design factors of DSLPRV is important. In this study, methodology for selecting design factors for DSLPRV was proposed. Dynamics of the DSLPRV disk was integrated into conventional 1D surge pressure analysis. Multi-objective genetic algorithm was also used to search optimum design factors for DSLPRV.

        This study develops a model to estimate the economic life of the large-diameter water supply pipeline in Korea by supplementing existing methods used to perform similar calculations. To evaluate the developed methodology, the model was applied to the actual target area with the conveyance pipe in P waterworks. The application yielded an economic life computation of 39.7 years, considering the cost of damages, maintenance, and renewal of the pipeline. Based on a sensitivity analysis of the derived results, the most important factor influencing the economic life expectancy was the predicted failure rate. The methodology for estimating the economic life of the water supply pipeline proposed in this study is one of the core processes of basic waterworks facility management planning. Therefore, the methods and results proposed in this study may be applied to asset management planning for water service providers.

        Optimal processes to remove chromaticity at E water treatment plant(WTP) mainly caused by algae of E lake in Jeju island were investigated based on lab-tests of chlorine and ozone oxidation. 42.9% of chromaticity of filtered water was removed by chlorine oxidation under pH 7.0∼8.0, dose of 1.0 mg/L with contact time of 30∼60 min. On the other hand, chromaticity removal was 71.4% when post-ozone dose of 0.9∼1.9 mg/L and pH 9.0, while it was increased to 86.7% under post-ozone dose of 3.1∼7.3 mg/L and pH 9.0. However, there was no significant chromaticity removal efficiency increase when ozone doses were higher than 5.0 mg/L regardless of feeding point(i.e., pre-ozonation and post-ozonation) and pHs(i.e., 7.0 and 9.0.) under the experimental conditions. Based on the results, chlorine oxidation using existing chlorination facilities at the WTP is recommended for lower chromaticity while ozone oxidation is recommended for higher chromaticity by installing new ozone feeding facilities.

        This paper tries to show the efficiency of water financing between central and local governments. From the year of 2017, the operation and maintenance costs for change water pipes has been provided by central government as block grants system(RDSA: Regional Development Special Account). Even though the water financing is responsible for local government, water drought and high production cost in poor area affects the quality of life nowadays. Then, fiscal transfer through block grant for water financing has been decided to invest regional SOC. The purpose of the paper sheds light on the function of the block grant for public provision by water financing. The firstly tried empirical results are based on the survey from local governments and ministry of environments. The point of the empirical analysis shows that the local governments does not have proper measurement for unexpected water leakage and termination until now. In a policy manner, the paper raises the issues about benefit principle for water users by the increase of tariffs. In order to do so, the paper investigates the relationship between the water provision and fiscal status of each local governments.

        Torsional constants of both rectangular cross section and circular cross section are induced by exact solution, and was easy to calculate since of simple shape. However, it is very difficult to calculate the torsional constant of both an arbitrary cross-section and a composite cross-section. In this study, a finite element formulation was proposed as a method to calculate the torsional constant of both an arbitrary cross-section and a composite cross-section. From the numerical study, numerical results was compared with exact solution.

        Surge pressure is created by rapid change of flow rate due to operation of hydraulic component or accident of pipeline. Proper control of surge pressure in distribution system is important because it can damage pipeline and may have the potential to degrade water quality by pipe leakage due to surge pressure. Surge relief valve(SRV) is one of the most widely used devices and it is important to determine proper parameters for SRV’s installation and operation. In this research, determining optimum parameters affecting performance of the SRV were investigated. We proposed the methodology for finding combination of parameters for best performance of the SRV. Therefore, the objective function for evaluate fitness of candidate parameters and surge pressure simulation software was developed to validate proposed parameters for SRV. The developed software was integrated into genetic algorithm(GA) to find best combination of parameters.

        There is a growing concern on the improvement of water distribution pipeline for multi-regional water supply system in Korea along with its aging infrastructure. Rehabilitation of large diameter pipeline is more efficient in cost and time compared to replacement with trenching. The procedure for rehabilitation are diagnosis, cleaning, spraying coating material, and final inspection. The internal state of pipeline was carefully diagnosed and got C grade, which required rehabilitation. We found that 17,274,787,000 Korean won could be saved after pipe surface coating because of increased C coefficient of Hazen-Williams equation. Optimal coating material was D polyurea. We also found optimal distance between spraying nozzle and pipe wall to be 70 - 80 cm, which were critical factors for coating quality. This study also illustrated the time for spray drying to be more than 30 min. These results could be used in the quality control process during rehabilitation of aged pipelines.
