Korean ECM constructions seem to give rise to many interesting problems with the minimalist program. Of these problems, we are mainly concerned with the following: (A) How is the ECMed NP/DP assigned accusative Case despite the fact that the clause containing it is supposed to be finite? (B) How can the ECMed NP/DP be affected by the accusative Case assigner though finite clauses are phases? Accessing answers to these problems, we will find out that some unknown properties of the embedded predicates in Korean ECM constructions are involved in the transitivity restriction, and that there is a derivational mechanism for determining whether given movement is A or A`.

Hang-Jin Yoon. 2000. Case Licensing in Gerundive Constructions. Studies in Modern Grammar 22, 87-105. This paper is designed to examine Case assigning mechanism of gerundive constructions in English. The main focus is on Case licensing in the Acc-ing construction. After examining the data which lead to the conclusion that there is no inside Case assigner for the Acc-ing construction, I explore the possibility of the subject of the construction being assigned Case by the outside assigner through transmission. I propose that the prepositional complementizer plays an important role in transmitting Case from the outside of the construction. I further explore the parallelism between infinitive constructions and gerundive constructions.

This paper accounts for the Case assignment of ECM verbs within the GB theory and the minimalist theory. The Case assignment of ECM verbs is accounted for on the "exceptional" level: that is, it is different from the other constructions within the GB theory. The Case assignment of believe verbs is consistently accounted for, like the Case assignment of all the constructions within the minimalist theory. Therefore, as a result from this paper, it comes to see that the minimalist theory is more explanatory adequacy than the GB theory in respect of the idea of grammar pursueing the minimum of grammar theory.

The main purpose of this paper is to reveal the explanatory power of the Minimalist Theory in terms of Case checking in there construction. The results of secondary purpose, the nature of associate-NP, is that unaccusative and be assign the Partitive Case to the indefinite associate-NP itself not to its position. This fact implies that Visibility Condition be extended to the movement condition. Since Case checking in general is simplified in the Minimalist Theory, the theory can be considered to be superior to GB theory in terms of Case checking. And in the frame of Minimalist Theory concerning there construction, there are two ways of Case checking to the associate -NP. One approach is that the NP gets its Case checked by being adjoined to the expletive, the other is that the NP being licensed Partitive Case from AgrO at LF is adjoined Affixal-there to satisfy Full Interpretation. I showed that the latter is superior to the former because the in consistent checking of the strong NP feature of TNS must be a defect point.
