        In this study, the glass melting properties are evaluated to examine the possibility of using refused coal ore as replacement for ceramic materials. To fabricate the glass, refused coal ore with calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate in it (which are added as supplementary materials) is put into an alumina crucible, melted at 1,200 ~ 1,500℃ for 1 hr, and then annealed at 600℃ for 2 hrs. We fabricate a black colored glass. The properties of the glass are measured by XRD (X-ray diffractometry) and TG-DTA (thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis). Glass samples manufactured at more than 1,300℃ with more than 60 % of refused coal ore are found by XRD to be non-crystalline in nature. In the case of the glass sample with 40 % of refused coal ore, from the sample melted at 1,200℃, a sodium aluminum phosphate peak, a disodium calcium silicate peak, and an unknown peak are observed. On the other hand, in the sample melted at 1,300℃, only the sodium aluminum phosphate peak and unknown peak are observed. And, peak changes that affect crystallization of the glass according to melting temperature are found. Therefore, it is concluded that glass with refused coal ore has good melting conditions at more than 1,200℃ and so can be applied to the construction field for materials such as glass tile, foamed glass panels, etc.

        삼불화알루미늄(AlF3)이 포함된 염화물-불화물 혼합 용융염에서 ZIRLO 튜브를 이용한 지르코늄 전해정련공정을 실증하였다. 순환 전압전류실험 결과, AlF3의 농도가 증가함에 따라 금속환원의 개시 전위가 일정하게 증가하고 지르코늄-알루미늄 합금형성과 관련된 추가적인 peak의 크기가 점차 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 전류조절 전착법과 달리, −1.2 V의 일정전위 에서 수행한 지르코늄 전해정련에서 방사형 판 구조의 지르코늄 성장이 염의 상단 표면에서 확연하게 나타났으며, 전착물 지름의 크기는 AlF3의 농도에 따라 점차 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 주사전자현미경(SEM)과 에너지 분산 X선 분광기(EDX) 와 X선 광전자 분광기(XPS)를 이용하여 판 구조의 지르코늄 전착물을 분석한 결과, 극미량의 알루미늄이 지르코늄-알루미늄 합금 형태로 존재하며, 전착물의 상단과 하단 간에 서로 다른 화학성분구조를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. AlF3의 첨가는 전착물 내 잔류염 양을 줄이고, 지르코늄 회수를 위한 전류효율을 향상시키는 데 효과적인 것으로 나타났다.

        In this study, Al-Si-Mg alloys are additively manufactured using a selective laser melting (SLM) process from AlSi10Mg powders prepared from a gas-atomization process. The processing parameters such as laser scan speed and laser power are investigated for 3D printing of Al-Si-Mg alloys. The laser scan speeds vary from 100 to 2000 mm/ s at the laser power of 180 and 270W, respectively, to achieve optimized densification of the Al-Si-Mg alloy. It is observed that the relative density of the Al-Si-Mg alloy reaches a peak value of 99% at 1600 mm/s for 180W and at 2000 mm/s for 270W. The surface morphologies of the both Al-Si-Mg alloy samples at these conditions show significantly reduced porosities compared to those of other samples. The increase in hardness of as-built Al-Si-Mg alloy with increasing scan speed and laser power is analyzed due to high relative density. Furthermore, it was found that cooling conditions after the heat-treatment for homogenization results in the change of dispersion status of Si phases in the Al-Si matrix but also affects tensile behaviors of Al-Si-Mg alloys. These results indicate that combination between SLM processing parameters and post-heat treatment should be considered a key factor to achieve optimized Al-Si alloy performance.

        In this study, clinching characteristics of aluminum and galvanized steels were investigated for the application of clinching as a joining technique to aluminum wheelhouse assembly. A6451 aluminium alloy and galvanized steel sheets were joined by hybrid joining(clinching + adhesive bonding). Tensile-shear load and fracture mode of hybrid joints were investigated. Maximum tensile-shear load of hybrid joints was about six times higher than that of clinched joints without adhesive. Energy absorption values of hybrid joints were higher than those of clinched joints without adhesive as well as resistance spot welded steel joints. Developed aluminum wheelhouse assembly showed higher static stiffness than the existing steel parts. Aluminum wheelhouse inner panel unit was 44% lighter than the steel unit, and the final assembled aluminum wheelhouse was 14.6% lighter than the existing steel parts.

        Selective laser melting (SLM), a type of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, leads a global manufacturing trend by enabling the design of geometrically complex products with topology optimization for optimized performance. Using this method, three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) data components can be built up directly in a layer-by-layer fashion using a high-energy laser beam for the selective melting and rapid solidification of thin layers of metallic powders. Although there are considerable expectations that this novel process will overcome many traditional manufacturing process limits, some issues still exist in applying the SLM process to diverse metallic materials, particularly regarding the formation of porosity. This is a major processing-induced phenomenon, and frequently observed in almost all SLM-processed metallic components. In this study, we investigate the mechanical anisotropy of SLM-produced 316L stainless steel based on microstructural factors and highly-oriented porosity. Tensile tests are performed to investigate the microstructure and porosity effects on mechanical anisotropy in terms of both strength and ductility.

        본 연구에서는 심부시추공 처분을 위한 밀봉시스템으로서 Gibb’s Group에 의해 제안된 화강암 용융 및 재결정화에 의한 시 추공 밀봉 방안에 대해 KURT 화강암을 대상으로 실현 가능성을 확인하였다. 화강암 용융 실험은 첨가제를 이용한 상압용 융시험과 물의 기화에 의한 수증기 고압용융시험 2가지로 수행되었다. 상압 용융시험 결과, KURT 화강암 분말에 NaOH를 첨가하여도 기본 융점보다 낮은 1,000℃에서 부분용융이 시작되었으며, 냉각된 용융물에서 침상결정의 형성을 확인하였다. 수증기 고압시험은 물의 첨가량에 따라 수증기압을 달리하며 최대 400 bar의 수증기압까지 용융 시험이 진행되었다. KURT 화강암은 낮은 수증기압에도 1,000℃에서 부분 용융이 시작되었으나, 물이 많이 첨가된 높은 수증기압에서 화강암의 부분 용융은 보이지 않았다. 따라서 소량의 수증기가 있는 고압상태가 화강암의 용융에 적합한 것으로 판단되었다. 한편, 고온고압의 수증기는 내부식성의 반응기 벽을 부식시켜, 고온의 수증기에 의한 처분용기의 부식 문제가 발생되었다.

        Li-Cd 합금을 이용한 환원추출방식을 LiCl-KCl 기반의 drawdown 공정에 적용하게 되면, LiCl-KCl 공융염의 조성이 파괴되므로 공정온도를 높여야 하며, 전해정련 및 전해제련과 같은 공정에 LiCl-KCl 용융염을 재사용할 수 없게 된다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 공융염 조성에 적합한 Li-K-Cd 합금을 제조하였으며, 이를 이용하여 U와 Nd가 포함된 LiCl-KCl 염에 투입하여 용 융염 내 UCl3의 제거가 가능한지 평가하였다.

        For diamond/metal composites it is better to use diamond particles coated with metal carbide because of improved wettability between the diamond particles and the matrix. In this study, the coating of diamond particles with a chromium carbide layer is investigated. On heating diamond and chromium powders at 800~900 oC in molten salts of LiCl, KCl, CaCl2, the diamond particles are coated with Cr7C3. The surfaces of the diamond powders are analyzed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The average thickness of the Cr7C3 coating layers is calculated from the result of the particle size analysis. By using the molten salt method, the Cr7C3 coating layer is uniformly formed on the diamond particles at a relatively low temperature at which the graphitization of the diamond particles is avoided. Treatment temperatures are lower than those in the previously proposed methods. The coated layer is thickened with an increase in heating temperature up to 900 oC. The coating reaction of the diamond particles with chromium carbide is much more rapid in LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 molten salts than with the molten salts of KCl-CaCl2.

        Multiple galvanized steel and aluminium alloy sheets were joined by self-piercing rivet(SPR) and hybrid joining(SPR + adhesive bonding). In this study, tensile-shear load and fatigue properties of multi-layer SPR and hybrid joints were investigated. Moreover, tensile-shear deformation behavior of the joints under different specimen configurations was investigated. Depending on the specimen configurations either top sheet tearing failure mode or rivet tail pull-out failure mode was observed during the tensile-shear tests. The top sheet tearing failure mode resulted in low maximum tensile-shear load, but it led to larger displacement value as compared to that in the tail pull-out failure mode. Maximum tensile-shear load of hybrid joints was about four times higher than that of SPR joints. Also, fatigue limit of hybrid joints was about two times higher than that of SPR joints.

        As an approach for estimation of the droplet size in the molten salt-liquid metal extraction process, a droplet formation experiment at room temperature was conducted to evaluate the applicability of the Scheele-Meister model with water-mercury system as a surrogate that is similar to the molten salt-liquid metal system. In the experiment, droplets were formed through the nozzle and the droplet size was measured using a digital camera and image analysis software. As nozzles, commercially available needles with inner diameters (ID) of 0.018 cm and 0.025 cm and self-fabricated nozzles with 3-holes (ID: 0.0135 cm), 4-holes (ID: 0.0135 cm), and 2-holes (ID: 0.0148 cm) were used. The mercury penetration lengths in the nozzles were 1.3 cm for the needles and 0.5 cm for the self-fabricated nozzles. The droplets formed from each nozzle maintained stable spherical shape up to 20 cm below the nozzle.         LiCl-KCl 용융염에서 광학적으로 투명한 텅스텐 망으로 제작된 작업전극에 대해 사마륨의 전기화학적 거동을 Cyclic voltammetry와 Potential step chronoabsorptometry의 전기화학적 및 분광전기화학적 방법으로 조사하였다. Cyclic voltammogram 으로 결정된 Sm3+/Sm2+의 산화환원 반응의 가역성을 기반으로 형식전위와 확산계수를 계산하여 각각 –1.99 V vs. Cl2/Cl- 와 2.53×10-6 cm2·s-1를 얻었다. 작업 전극에 –1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl (wt%)로 전압을 인가하여 측정한 Chronoabsorptometry 를 통해 사마륨 이온의 특성 파장으로 Sm3+에 대해 408.08 nm, Sm2+에 대해 545.62 nm를 확인하였다. Voltammogram에서 얻은 환원 피크 전압과 산화 피크 전압을 이용하여 Potential step chronoabsorptometry를 수행하였다. 545.63 nm의 흡광 피크 값을 분석하여 2.15×10-6 cm2·s-1의 확산계수를 얻었으며 이 값은 동일한 온도에서 Cyclic voltammtry 분석으로 얻은 값과 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다. 실험결과로부터 고온 용융염에서 광학적으로 투명한 작업전극을 이용한 분광전기화학적 방 법이 용융염에 용해된 이온의 종류를 확인하며 전기화학적 거동을 조사하는데 유용한 도구로 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

        In this study, the coating of an Al-Cr layer on the surface of a Zircaloy-4 alloy was carried out through plasma pretreatment coating and a laser surface melting process. Two different conditions for laser treatment, severe or minimal surface melting of the Zr alloy substrate, were applied to form the final coating. When there was significant surface melting of the Zr alloy, the solidification microstructure of the newly formed coating layer was mainly composed of needle-shaped Al3Zr, Al(Cr) and Al7Cr phases. On the other hand, the solidification microstructure of the coating layer was mainly composed of Al(Cr) and Al7Cr phases when there was minimal surface melting of Zr base in the laser process. However, when the coating was maintained at 1100 oC for 2 hours, significant inter-diffusion occurred between the phases in the coating. As a result, the upper part of the coating layer was observed to mainly consist of Al3Zr and Al8Cr5 phases, regardless of the laser treatment conditions.

        In this study, STS316L powders prepared by gas atomization are used to manufacture bulk structures with dimensions of 10 × 10 × 10 mm3 using selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructures and hardness of the fabricated 316L stainless steel has been investigated with the laser beam overlap varied from 10% to 70%. The microstructures of the fabricated STS316L samples show a decrease in the balling and satellite of powders introducing defect in the bulk samples and the porosity caused by the gap between the molten metal pools disappearing as the overlap ratio increases, whereas a low overlap ratio results in significant balling and a large amount of isolated powders due to the increased gap between the melt pools. Furthermore, the highest value in Vickers hardness is obtained for the sample fabricated by 30% overlapped laser beams. These results show that the overlap ratio of laser beams in the SLM process should be considered as an important process parameter.

        Zirconium(Zr) nuclear fuel cladding tubes are made using a three-time pilgering and annealing process. In order to remove the oxidized layer and impurities on the surface of the tube, a pickling process is required. Zr is dissolved in HF and HNO3 mixed acid during the process and pickling waste acid, including dissolved Zr, is totally discarded after being neutralized. In this study, the waste acid was recycled by adding BaF2, which reacted with the Zr ion involved in the waste acid; Ba2ZrF8 was subsequently precipitated due to its low solubility in water. It is very difficult to extract zirconium from the as-recovered Ba2ZrF8 because its melting temperature is 1031 oC. Hence, we tried to recover Zr using an electrowinning process with a low temperature molten salt compound that was fabricated by adding ZrF4 to Ba2ZrF8 to decrease the melting point. Change of the Zr redox potential was observed using cyclic voltammetry; the voltage change of the cell was observed by polarization and chronopotentiometry. The structure of the electrodeposited Zr was analyzed and the electrodeposition characteristics were also evaluated.

        플라즈마토치 용융로에 있어서 내화물의 보수를 최소화하고 용융물의 배출을 원활하게 하기 위해서는 처리대상 폐기물의 물 성을 충분히 고려하여야 한다. 원전에서 발생되는 비가연성 방사성폐기물 중 많은 비중을 차지하고 있는 콘크리트 조각, 유 리, 모래 등에 대한 화학적 조성비를 조사하여 보면 산성산화물이 염기성산화물에 비해 압도적으로 많은 비중을 차지하고 있 으므로 용융 시 염기도가 매우 낮은 산성 슬래그가 된다. 이 용융슬래그는 유동도가 낮아서 용융물의 배출특성이 좋지 않으 며 내화물에 침식을 유발시키는 주된 요인이 된다. 경사형 구조의 측면 출탕구를 가진 플라즈마토치 용융로의 경우, 구조상 출탕 후 일정량의 금속성 용융물이 항상 용융로 내부 바닥과 출탕구에 남게 된다. 비중차에 의해 비금속 용융슬래그는 금속 성 용융물 상부에 위치하게 되며 혼합형 플라즈마토치를 이행형 운전모드로 가동하게 되면 금속성 용융물과 비금속 용융물 이 동시에 용융되므로 비금속 용융슬래그의 온도는 금속 용융온도 이상으로 유지가 된다. 내화물의 수명 향상을 위해 용융로 내부의 온도와 용융물과 접촉하는 부위와 접촉되지 않는 부위를 구별하여 내화물의 특성을 주지하고 가장 적합한 내화물을 부위별로 선정하였다. 산성 내화물과 염기성 내화물이 인접하지 않도록 하고 용융슬래그에 대한 저항성을 높이도록 하였다.
