Rock discontinuities in underground rock behave as weak planes and affect the safety of underground structures, such as high-level radioactive waste disposal and underground research facilities. In particular, rock discontinuities can be a main flow path of groundwater and induce large deformation caused by stress disturbance or earthquakes. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the characteristics of rock discontinuities considering in-situ conditions when constructing highlevel radioactive waste disposal, which needs to assure the long-term safety of the structure. We prepared Hwang-Deung granite rock block specimens, including a saw-cut rock surface, to perform multi-stage direct shear tests as a preliminary study. In the multi-stage direct shear tests, we can exclude possible errors induced by different specimens for obtaining a full failure envelope by using an identical specimen. We applied the initial normal stress of 3 MPa on the specimen and increased the normal stress to 5 and 10 MPa step by step after peak shear stress observation. We obtained the mechanical properties of saw-cut rock surfaces from the experiments, including friction coefficient and cohesion. Additionally, we investigated the effect of filling material between rock discontinuities, assuming the erosion and piping phenomenon in the buffer material of the engineering barrier system. When the filling material existed in the rock surfaces, the shear characteristics deteriorated, and the effect of bentonite was dominant on the shear behavior.

PURPOSES: Surface treatment is a favorable method in the pavement preventive maintenance. This study (Part Ⅰ) aimed to develop the low viscosity filling material for waterproof characteristics and high penetrable and weather resistance, and a series of companion study (Part Ⅱ) presents the coating characteristics and performance analysis using field and lab tests. METHODS : Hydrophobic characteristics of the advanced surface treatment material are observed and measured the filling depth and the permeability for sand and asphalt pavement specimen using the water absorption test and permeability test, X-RAY CT test. Color difference for the weather resistance using ultraviolet ray accelerated weathering test is compared with asphalt pavement specimens. RESULTS : The developed material shows the decreased water absorption and increased impermeable effect because of the hydrophobic characteristics. It is found that the filling depth is about 6mm and weather resistance is better than asphalt pavement specimen. CONCLUSIONS: The advanced hydrophobic - low viscosity filling treatment material is developed in this study (Part Ⅰ) to improve the waterproof characteristics and high filling capacity and weather resistance for the pavement preventive maintenance.

This study presents flowable fill material using collected CO2 byproduct, which prevents geotechnical sinking related to underground utilities in the vicinity of downtown areas. The physical and mechanical characteristics of calcium carbonate found using laboratory tests (the uniaxial compressive strength test, comparison of the shear base of dynamic behavior and restriction pressure, the freeze-thawing test) on 3, 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of the flowable fill were investigated and analyzed. The correlations of the unconfined strength, elastic modulus, flow, and w/c were suggested as evaluation indicators of the mechanical characteristics for the calcium carbonate flowable fill.

To repair pothole failure in asphalt pavement, this study is developing high durability rehabilitation method using construction equipment and pre-cast material. The various filling material was examined to bond pre-cast repair material at asphalt pavement, performance was evaluated throuth tensile bond and shear bond test. As a result, Guss asphalt binder and two-component polyurethane material was shown a superior performance in terms of tensile bond strength, shear bond strength was two-component polyurethane material to be effective.
