        This paper aims to describe the relation between the weather condition, especially typhoon and a shipwreck in Korean waters. For this study, it was investigated the statistical characteristics of a shipwreck due to the weather, pressure patterns governing the shipwreck in Korean waters. and the relation between the intensity of typhoon and the amount of a disaster. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The monthly occurrence frequency of a shipwreck was the heighest in July followed by February, March in descending order. 2) The pressure patterns governing the shipwreck were classified broadly into six types and pressure pattern which had most occurrence frequency of a shipwreck was Type V and then cames Type I, Type III and type IV in that order. 3) Occurence frequency of a shipwreck and the amount of a kinetic energy of typhoon have nothing to do with each other. In case of Wind-Typhoon that brought more a strong wind than a heavy rainfall, there were seriously affected ships and buildings by the wind.

        한국근해의 중층 트로올선에서 전개판의 수중중량을 경감시켜서 끌줄을 길게 주므로서 전개력을 향상시키기 위하여 스티로폴뜸을 전개판의 천정판에 고정시키고 끌줄 길이와 예망속력을 변화시켰을 때의 전개판의 깊이와 전개간격을 실측한 것을 분석.검토한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 전개판 깊이는 끌줄 길이가 100m이고 예망속력이 101~108m/sec인 범위에서 뜸이 있을 경우 41~25m, 뜸이 없을 경우 45~26m이고, 뜸줄 길이가 150m일 경우는 뜸이 있을 경우 68~44m, 뜸이 없을 경우 74~46m로서 뜸이 있을 경우가 없을 경우보다도 9~4% 정도 얕았다. 또 실측치는 어느 경우나 계산치보다도 15% 작았다. 2. 전개판의 전개간격은 끌줄 길이가 100m이고, 예망속력이 1.1~1.8m/sec인 범위에서는 뜸이 있을 경우 34~41m, 뜸이 없을 경우 30~38m이고, 끌줄 길이가 150m일 때는 뜸이 있을 경우 44~50m, 뜸이 없을 경우 37~46로서 있을 경우가 없을 경우보다도 끌줄 길이 100m에서 10%, 150m에서 15%정도 더 컸다. 또, 실측치는 계산치보다 항상 컸으며 계산치에 대한 실측치의 비는 끌줄 길이가 100m일 때 1.17~1.14, 150m일 때 1.17~1.09이었다. 3. 날개 끝 간격은 끌줄 길이 100m인 때 뜸이 있을 경우가 없을 경우보다 1m 정도 크고 유효망구면적으로는 10% 정도 크며, 끌줄 길이가 150m인 때는 그 차이가 2m로서 유효망구면적으로는 20% 정도 크다고 추정된다. 따라서 전개판에 뜸을 달아서 전개판의 수중중량을 일시적으로 가볍게 해 주는 것은 유효망구면적을 크게 하므로 어획성능향상에 상당히 도움이 될 것이 기대된다

        한국 근해에서 조업하는 트로올선에 알맞은 중층 트로올어구를 개발하기 위하여 부산수산대학 실습선 부산 404호(160 GT, 750Ps)로서 조업하기에 알맞게 설계된 어구로서 어구의 유체저항을 측정하고, 그것으로부터 어구의 유체저항을 추산할 수 있는 식을 유도하고, 또한 전개판의 전개력계수와 항력계수를 구한 것을 요약하면 대략 다음과 같다. 1. 어구의 전항력 T=2.15 v 상(1.12), 그물의 항력 R 하(N)=1.96 v 상(1.01)으로서 v의 지수는 1에 가까워서 그물이 물을 잘 여과시켜줌을 시사한다. 2. 소산의 저항의 식에 따라 구한 그물의 유체저항의 추산식은 R 하(N)=4.3×d/l×abv 라고 표현할 수 있다. 3. 전개판의 전개력은 그물의 항력의 19~22%이고, 전개력계수는 1.5정도이며, 항력은 그물의 항력의 5~7%이고, 항력계수는 0.42정도이다

        한국 근해에서 종업하고 있는 트로올선에 알맞은 중층 트로올어구를 개발하기 위하여 부산수산대학 실습선 부산 404호(160 GT, 750 PS)로서 조업하기에 알맞게 설계된 어구로써 어구의 수직전개도를 측정.조사한 것을 요약하면 대략 다음과 같다. 1. 전개판의 깊이의 끌줄 길이에 대한 비는 0.44~0.25의 범위에 있고, 속력에 따라 거의 직선적으로 변하며, 속력이 약 0.1m/sec, 기관의 회전수로서는 약 20 증가할 때마다 약 5m씩 얕아진다. 또, 전개판 깊이의 실측치는 계산치보다 항상 작으며, 그 비는 0.92~0.80의 범위에 있고, 예망속력이 빨라질수록 작아진다. 2. 뜸줄의 깊이는 전개판의 깊이보다 2~3m 더 깊으며, 망구의 수직전개도는 22~19m의 범위에 있고, 속력이 빨라질수록 작아진다. 3. 추의 깊이와 전개판의 깊이의 차는 예망속력에 관계없이 끌줄 100m 인 때 약 20m, 150m인 때 약 22m이며 추의 깊이는 발줄 중앙부는 해저에 닿되, 추는 닿지 않게 할 수 있다. 4. RPM을 20씩 변화시킬 때의 뜸줄 깊이의 변화폭 4m 전후이며, 변화속도는 0.017~0.019m/sec정도이다

        The authors carried out an experiment to determine the horizontal opening of the mid water trawl gear, which is the same as was used in the foreward experiment concerned to the attitude and opening efficiency of otter board. The trawl net .used in the experiment was designed to have a square sectional four-seamed body with two three-sepenlted wings. Each wing tip was rigged with a net pendant of 70 m long and the fore ends of the pendants were directly jointed to the otter pendant without inserting hand rope, and a front weight of 200 kg weigh was rigged with in front of the lowest wing tip. To determine the opening between otter boards ani between wing tips, two 50 KHz fish finders were set sideways on the otter board and on the port middle wing tip so as to detect the distance froa the finders to the starboard otter board and to the wing tip respectively, and the informations were transmitted to the indicators onboard the ship through water-tight cables. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The openings between otter borads were 43-45 m in case of the warp 100 m, 53-55 m in the war;> 150 m and 54-59 m in the warp 200 m. It was increased in linear according to the increase of towin; speed in the range of 1. 1-1. 8 mlscc. 2. The determined values of the openings between otter boards were greater than the estimated values. which were calculated by the opening between warps at the gallows of the ship and the length of tt~ warp, assuming that the warps from the top rollers to the otter boards were straight. The rates of the determined values to the estimated values were 1. 23-11. 0 in case of the warp 100 m, 1. 23-1. 12 in the warp 150 m and 1. 23-1. 15 in the warp 200 m respectively. The rates were almost the same at the slow towing speed of 1. 3 mlscc or so, then the higher the speed, the less the rate, and the longer the warp, the greater the rate. 3. The rates of the openings between otter boards to the total length of net pendant and the net (excluded cod end) showed 43-43% in case of the warp 150-200 m. It was a little smaller than th~ standard. which is 50%. in the common bottom trawl. 4. The determined openings between wing tips were 18-19 m in case of the warp 100m, 21-22 m in the warp 150 rn, They showed that the higher the speed, the greater the openings even though its range was no more than 1 m or so. 5. The rates of openings between otter boards to th~ openings betwee:l wing tips were almost invariably 38%. 6. The rates of openigs b2tween otter boards to the lenth of h~ad rope were 60-65% in cas': of th~ warp lOa-150m. It were much larg2r than th~ standard. which is 50%. in the common botto:n trawl.

        To investigate the midwater trawl gear available for the Korean near sea trawlers, the authors carried out a field experiment on the attitude and the opening efficiency of the otter board with the Pusan 404 (160GT, 750ps), a training ship of National Fisheries University of Pusan. The experimental trawl gear was designed to be operable by the ship and the otter board was made of single iron plate with 12% camber ratio. The special-prepared potentiometric angle detector was used for determining the attitude, and the 50 KHz fish finder for the opening between the otter boards. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The angle of attack varied by moving the towing point on the towing plate of the otter board. It showed 33 to 36 degrees when the point was set at the outmost position, 25 to 31 degrees at the middle position and 19 to 30 degrees at the inmost position, with a decreasing tendency according to the increase of towing speed in each cases. 2. The heel of the otter board always occured inwards, increasing slightly according to the increase of towing speed. 3. The tilt of the otter board always occured outwards, increasing slightly according to the move of the towing point inwards, and decreasing slightly according to the increase of towing speed. 4. The opening between otter boards showed the largest value when the towing point was set at the outmost position.

        This study investigates the temporal and spatial variations of marine meterological elements (air temperature (Temp), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and Significant Wave Height (SWH)) in seven coastal waters of South Korea, using hourly data observed at marine meteorological buoys (10 sites), Automatic Weather System on lighthouse (lighthouse AWS) (9 sites), and AWS (20 sites) during 2013-2017. We also compared the characteristics of Temp, SST, and air-sea temperature difference (Temp-SST) between sea fog and non-sea-fog events. In general, annual mean values of Temp and SST in most of the coastal waters were highest (especially in the southern part of Jeju Island) in 2016, due to heat waves, and lowest (especially in the middle of the West Sea) in 2013 or 2014. The SWH did not vary significantly by year. Wind patterns varied according to coastal waters, but their yearly variations for each coastal water were similar. The maximum monthly/seasonal mean values of Temp and SST occurred in summer (especially in August), and the minimum values in winter (January for Temp and February for SST). Monthly/seasonal mean SWH was highest in winter (especially in December) and lowest in summer (June), while the monthly/seasonal variations in wind speed over most of the coastal waters (except for the southern part of Jeju Island) were similar to those of SWH. In addition, sea fog during spring and summer was likely to be in the form of advection fog, possibly because of the high Temp and low SST (especially clear SST cooling in the eastern part of South Sea in summer), while autumn sea fog varied between different coastal waters (either advection fog or steam fog). The SST (and Temp-SST) during sea fog events in all coastal waters was lower (and more variable) than during non-sea-fog events, and was up to 5.7℃ for SST (up to 5.8℃ for Temp-SST).

        Catch data for the common squid (Todarodes pacificus), classified by squid-jigging fisheries per grid (size: 0.5° latitude × 0.5° longitude), and the water temperature values KODC (Korea Ocean Data Center) were collected for the 1980–2009 period to study the changes in squid distribution and migration with climate regimes (1980s, 1990s, and 2000s). The primary fishing period in the 1990s and 2000s was approximately 2–3 months earlier than that in the 1980s. Especially in the East Sea, the fishing grounds in the 1980s stayed longer at high latitudes than those in the other decades. Moreover, in the 1980s, centers of the fishing ground were located near the Yamato bank (central East Sea), whereas in the 1990s and 2000s, they were situated near the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula.

        Korea has a systemic problem with lack of engine maintenance, especially among the Commercial Fishing Vessel fleet. This results in a inordinate percent of SAR call-outs for vessels with engine failure. These SAR call-outs lead to a free tow to shore by KCG or by one of its volunteer associates. Although these tows are not a terrible economic burden on KCG, it is a burden in terms of time and resources mis-allocated. This paper proposes a Commercial Fishing Vessel Examination (CFVE) program modeled after the program run by USCG. It is expected that adopting the CFVE program, KCG may be able to create a culture of safety among fishermen; thus, replicating the USCG’s success rates.

        본 논문에서는 월별 해양사고건수를 이용하여 국내 해역의 해양사고에 관한 통계적인 기초분석을 수행하였다. 이를 위해서 해역간 해양사고건수의 차이여부, 연간 해양사고건수의 차이여부, 그리고 월간 해양사고건수의 차이여부 등을 국내 해역별 및 어선과 비어선으로 나누어 일원분산분석을 통해 확인하였다. 그리고 추가적으로 사후분석을 수행하여 분석그룹에 대한 평균차이의 검정을 하였다 결론적으로 해역간 사고건수에는 서해, 남해, 그리고 동해순으로 많았고 서로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 연간 사고건수의 차이에서는 어선의 경우 남해와 동해에서, 비어선의 경우 남해에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 또한 월간 해양사고건수에 대한 차이에서는 어선에 대해서만 서해와 동해에서 서로 유의한 차이를 보였다.

        The clarification of spatial-temporal patterns of phytoplankton from southern coastal waters during the period of March to November in 2004 was carried out. Total cell numbers were shown in 5,286 cells ml−1 on March and reached to encounter a peak of 27,775 cells ml−1 on July. Mean cell number was also shown in maximum of 1,587 cells ml−1 on July, which recorded approximately two times higher than on June. The cell number of phytoplankton from southmiddle waters attained an abundance of ≥35 regardless of months, which was the highest the abundance of phytoplankton in 2004 than any other waters in this study. Southwestern waters were lower the cell number of 2-5 times than those of southmiddle and southeastern waters. In particular, Prorocentrum occurred in southeastern waters on June and the highest cell number of 8,200 cells ml−1 around Tongyeong region on July, which was recorded to occupy the value of 60.9% in southeast waters. The abundance of Skeletonema costatum as a dominant taxa in southwest was shown in ≥60 on March, July, September, and October, whereas was also recorded to achieve the abundance of above 80% in southmiddle waters on March, July, and September. The majority of the taxa in southeastern waters was diatom: Eucampia zoodiacus, and Chaetoceros spp.. They occupied above 45%. On November, most of southern waters were abundant to Chaetoceros spp. On the basis of cluster analysis using SPSS ver 10.0, phytoplankton occurring on March showed somewhat no correlation with all of southern waters. In contrast to on March, the relationship between southwestern and southmiddle waters was shown on August and November, indicating a distinction from southeastern waters. However, the distance between southwestern/middle and southeastern waters appeared to be less than 5. Consequently, the abundance of phytoplankton in southern waters showed much fluctuations in temporal and spatial assays. In particular, southwestern and southmiddle waters during the periods of summer and winter appeared to be a similar to environmental characteristics.

        The relationship between the distribution of sea surface temperature(SST) and dinoflagellate(Cochlodinium polykrikoides) bloom areas were studied. The SST data were derived from the infrared channels of AVHRR(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) sensor on NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) 12 and 14 satellites during 1995-1998. The initial water temperature at C. polykrikoides bloom was about 21℃ at the coastal areas of the South Sea and along the shore of the East Sea of Korea during the summer season of 1995. The northern limit of red tides was coincident with that of 21℃ isothermal line in the East Sea. The red tides that initially bloomed at the coast of Pohang on September 21, 1995 moved to the coast of Uljin on September 26, 1995. The skipped appearance of the red tides in the areas between Pohang and Uljin was due to the East Korean Warm Current, which was moving offshore from Pohang to approach to Uljin. The cold water which was formed by tidal front in the western coast of the South Sea and by upwelling water from deep layer in the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula played a role in blocking the spreading of red tides during summer season in 1997 and 1998. In conclusion, the distribution of red tides appeared to be dependent on the initial water temperature at red tides bloom. The SST at the red tides varied from 21℃ to 25℃ ; 21℃, 23℃, 24℃ and 24-25℃ in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998, respectively.

        Extreme environments and freak wave characteristics in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula are analyzed using the observed wave data. Freak wave has been intensely emphasized as an important environmental force parameter in several recent research works. However, the mechanism and occurrence probability of freak wave are not clarified. The aims of this study are: to summarize the distribution of extreme environment for wind waves, and to find occurrence probability of freak wave in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula. These extreme sea conditions are discussed by applying extreme value analysis method, and the statistic characteristics are summarized which can be used to the design and analysis of coastal structures. The mechanism and the occurrence probability of freak wave are also discussed in detail using wave parameters in considered with wave deformation in the coastal waters.
