We carried out this subject to observe photoisomerization using 1,2-dioleoyl-sn- glycero-3-phosphocholine(DOPC) mixed with fatty acid containing azobenzene group which has reversible to cis-trans by light irradiation. Spreading solutions for the LB films were prepared in chloroform(5.0×10-5mol/L).We investigated the photoisomerization and property of the organic ultra thin film of fatty acid containing azobenzene was prepared on the hydrophilic ITO(idium tin oxide) glass plate by LB method. As a result, the absorption spectra of 8A5H and DOPC of mixture LB films was induced to photoisomerization by alternating irradiation of ultraviolet and visible light, because the condensation of pure azobenzene monolayers was loosened by the introduction of phospholipid into the monolayers, and the molecular high aggregation in pure azobenzene monolayers is also weakened by the introduction of phospholipid. We found that it was reversibly induced to cis-trans photoisomerization in several solvents and mixture LB films.

Cellulose tosylate(CT) was prepared by reaction of cellulose with p- toluenesulfonylchloride in DMAc/LiCl homogeneous system. In order to study a reversible photoisomerization of disperse red 1(DR-1) attached on natural polymer, cellulose tosylate containing DR-1(DR-1/CT adduct) was prepared at 110℃ in DMAc, and the changes of UV/Vis spectra of its solutions and thick film were investigated by alternate irradiation technique. Form the UV/Vis spectra of DR-1/CT adduct dissolved in cosolvents, such as DMAc, DMAc/THF, DMAc/benzene, and DMAc/chloroform and irradiated with 360 nm and 450 nm ligths, we found out changes of UV/Vis spectra were reversible in all solvents systems and we found out changes of UV/Vis spectra were reversible at thick film, also.

We synthesized the p-nonyloxyazobenzene derivatives with functional structures and carried out this experiments to observe photoisomerization irradiated by alternate lights. We found that it was reversibly induced to cis-trans photoisomerization in several solvents. Spreading solutions for the LB films were prepared in chloroform(1.2×10-2 mmol). As a result, it is found that the absorption spectra of the LB monolayer films was induced to photoisomerization by alternative irradiation lights, temperatures and pH(HCL and NH3), respectively.

We have investgated UV-Vis absorbance to observe the photoisomerization using the mixture solutions in chloroform and LB monolayers mixed with DLPE and 8A5H containing azobenzene which showed reversible cis-trans photoisomerization irradiated by alternate lights. We have found that the absorbance spectrums of the mixture solutions and LB monolayers were reversibly induced to cis-trans photoisomerization irradiated by alternate lights. In addition, the absorbance of both solution and LB monolayer mixed with 8A5H and DLPE were reversibly by alternate temperatures. As a results, the 1:1(by volume) mixture ratio of 8A5H and DLPE was more flexible and reversible cis-trans photoisomerization than the others.

We carried out this subject to observe photoisomerization using 8A5H and phospholipid(DLPC) containing azobenzene group which has reversible to cis-trans by light irradiation. We investigated the photoisomerization and property of the monolayer film on quartz substrate prepared by the mixture of 8A5H and phospholipid deposited using Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method. It was found that the absorption spectrum of the 8A5H and phospholipid LB monolayer was induced to photoisomerization by alternate light irradiation. And the absorbance of both the solution of mixtures of 8A5H-phospholipid and LB film was reversibly changed by the acid-base exposure and alternate temperatures.

In order to study a reversible photoisomerization of disperse red l(DR 1) attached on natural polymers, cellulose acetate containing DR l(DR 1/CA adduct) was prepared, and the changes of UV/VIS spectra of its solution(benzene, DMAc). thick film, and LB film were investigated by alternate irradiation with two different wave length lights. DR 1/CA adduct was prepared through tosylation of partially hydrolyzed cellulose acetate followed by reaction with DR 1 at 100℃ in pyridine. From the UV/VIS spectra of DR 1/CA adduct dissolved in DMAc solvent including phosphoglyceride before and after irradiation at 360nm and 45Onm, we found out the changes of UV/VIS spectra were reversible. In addition, the change of UV/VIS spectra of this adduct solution was strongly depended on the sorts of solvents and temperature. As the temperature was increased, UV/VIS spectra of this adduct solution in DMF showed blue shift. These results provided this solution could be applied to a temperature sensor. In the thick film case, we also obtained similar results with solution case. LB monolayer and trilayer from DR 1/CA adduct was obtained by scattering the solution including phosphoglyceride on water surface at the surface pressure of 8mN/m. After irradiation on that LB monolayer and trilayer, the reversible photoisomerization was also detected. From these results we concluded DR 1/CA adduct was suitable for the application to data storage and optical switch, etc.

Maxwell displacement current(MDC) measuring technique has been applied on the study of monolayers of fatty acid. The displacement current was generated from monolayers on the water surface by monolayer compression and expansion. Displacement current was generated when the area per molecule was about 130a2. MDCs were investigated in connection with monolayer compression cycles. It was found that the current pulses were generated over the entire range of molecular area, and the maximum of MDC appeared at the molecular area just before the initial rise of surface pressure in compression cycles. We investigated the change in absorption spectra of the fatty acid(8A5H) monolayer LB film due to cis-trans photoisomerization. It was found that the absorption spectrum of the 8A5H LB film was induce to photoisomerization by alternate irradiation with UV and visible light irradiation.

The absorption spectra of synthesis of long chain fatty acid containing azobenzene start from p-(p'-hydroxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in chloroform solvent at the various temperature. In addition, The pressure-area of the water-air interface was obtained and the LB film was fabricated onto a quartz slide and quartz crystal by conventional Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method. The UV absorption spectra of Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) film on quartz slide and spectrum of monolayer formed on quartz crystal have been measured. Long chain fatty acid containing azobenzene are induced phtoisomerization by the application of u. v. and visible light irradiation alternatively the reversibility of phtoisomerization was more clear difference when the number of Cn increased but, not so good at C14-azo. At the pressure-area isotherms, the value of surface pressure increment were decreased when the number of Cn increased. A surface pressure of 20mN/m was obtained as a proper one for a film deposition. The photoisomerization at LB films were induced by application of UV and visible light irradiation alternatively. So the LB film of long chain fatty acid containing azobenzene has possibility to being applied to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.

The Synthesis of azobenzene containing long chain fatty acid and poly vinyl alcohol by esterification reaction(Cn-Azo-PVA) was optimized, starting from P-(P'-hydroxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid and the product of reaction containing azobenzene chromophores was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in toluene solvent at room temperature. In addition, UV absorption spectra of Langmmuir Blodggett (LB) film deposited on quartz plate have been measured and the structure of these compounds were ascertained by means of Ultraviolet and FT-IR. Recrystallization of reaction product in the solvent results the experimental yield obtained about 22.27% P-(P'-octadecyloxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid-poly vinyl alcohol. Long chain azobenzene derivative-poly vinyl alcohols are induced phtoisomerization by u, v, and visible light irradiation. The LB film of azobenzene containing long chain fatty acids(C18-Azo-PVA) are possible of being applied to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.
