        Little attention has been paid to the functional aspect of the flower petal of Paeonia lactiflora, compared to that of its root. To determine the components of flower petal of Paeonia lactiflora, we conducted the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) MASS spectrophotometric analysis. We detected the 24 different types of ingredients from the 70% ethanol extracts of flower petal of peonia lactiflora cv. ‘Red Charm’. The main compounds were quercetin glucopyranosides, methyl gallate, paonioflolol and kaemperol glucopyranosides. We further tested its functional activity. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of the extracts was 87.9-90.4% at 0.1mg/ml. This result showed that these flower extracts have approximately 5-fold stronger antioxidant potential than a previous report with root extracts (Bang et al. 1999). The result of tyrosinase inhibition assay of Paeonia lactflora extract was almost similar to that of arbutin except significantly higher effect in the coral sunset extract at 0.1% concentration. Hyaluronidase inhibition assay showed 76.5% inhibition at 5% concentration of this flower extract, indicating that Peaonia lactiflora flower extracts have the major anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and brightening effects. Taken together, these results suggest these three Paeonia lactiflora species extracts might provide the basis to develop a new natural brightening agent.

        A comparative petal micromorphology of 15 taxa of tribe Sorbarieae was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their taxonomic and systematic implication. The characteristics of both adaxial and abaxial side of petal epidermal cells such as shape, arrangement, anticlinal wall and cuticular sculpture were described in detail. The Sorbarieae petal epidermal cells were identified as papillate or conical papillate (PCS) and rectangular-rugose tabular (TRS). Three types of petal micromorphology were found within the tribe based on the cell patterns of adaxial and abaxial side. Type I. PCS-TRS, Type II. PCS-PCS, Type III. TRS-TRS (adaxial-abaxial side). The petal epidermal cell types, anticlinal cell wall, and cuticular sculpture represent not only taxonomical importance for identification between or within the genera but also systematic implication. Moreover, this study provides a relation between petal epidermal cell pattern and insect pollinator (entomophily; melittophily) as an additional case.

        A new cultivars Dendranthema grandiflourm ‘Dream River’ was developed at Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services(GARES),Korea in 2010. The cultivar ‘Dream River’ was crossed in 2007 between ‘Geumsu’, a spray cultivar with yellow single type, and ‘Crangball’, a spray cultivar with pink single type. Trials were conducted from 2008 to 2011 for evaluations and selection of this variety, including a shading culture in summer and a retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of ‘Dream River’ was late October, and year-round flowering is possible by shading or lighting treatment. After the test of specific characters from 2009 to 2011, it was finally selected and named. The cultivar has an single type flowers with ivory petals and a green flower center. The diameter of flower is 56.0mm. Numbers of flowrs per stem and petals per flower are 15.2 and 26.5, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 53 days in the four season. The cultivar ‘Dream River’ has ivory petal with 7.5weeks to flowering under the short day treatment.

        A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar, 'Innocence' was released by National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration (RDA), in 2005. It was selected from the progenies of open pollination of 'Sei-Alps' in 2002. After evaluation for the characteristics including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in spring between 2002 and 2005, final selection was made. The natural flowering time of "Innocence" is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and illumination. It has round and wide petal, single type flowers with pure white petals and yellowish green flower center. The flowers are large and volumed. The plant shows vigorous growth. The diameter of flower is 7.4 cm. The number of flowers per stem is 9.3 and number of petals per flower is 27.7. The days to flower under short day treatment is about 57 and its vase life is 19 days in autumn season.

        홍화 재배시 종실의 수량 감소가 적으면서 꽃잎 수량을 증가시키기 위해 밀식과 적심을 통하여 시험한 결과를 요약하면 아래와 같다. 개화기는 관행이 6월 23일인데 비해 적심 처리구는 2일 늦은 6월 25일에 개화하였으며 밀식처리구는 같았다. 유효분지수는 2열 밀식재배와 3열 밀식재배가 적심이나 대조구에 비해 많았으며, 유효화두수는 3열밀식재배에서 270개/m2 로 가장 많았으나 적심은 186~223 개/로 적었다. 종실 수량은 대조구 10a당 220 kg에 비해 2열밀식재배는 231 kg으로 5% 증수 되었다. 채화 화두수는 3열밀식이 가장 많았으나 건조된 꽃잎 수량은 2열밀식과 3열밀식이 10a당 25.4 kg, 26.9 kg으로 대조구의 22.0 kg에 비해 각각 15%, 22% 증수되었다.
