한자·한문을 공부하기 시작한 학생들에게 가장 먼저 난관으로 작용하는 사항이 있으니, 바로 자전을 사용하는 방법을 터득하는 일이다. 자전을 익숙하게 사용하 는 방법의 터득은 일정 기간의 훈련이 필요하다. 자전의 사용법 그 자체를 놓고 공부해야 하는 현상은, 다른 외국어 자전을 사용할 때에는 발생하지 않는 일이다. 이는 3천여 년의 장구한 역사를 지닌 한자의 특수성에서 비롯한 문제라는 것은 두말할 필요가 없다. 요즈음 학생들이 자전을 사용하는 방법을 터득하기에는, 주위 환경이 30여 년 전과 비교하여 매우 불리하다. 전자 사전이 널리 보급되고 또 인터넷망이 발달함 으로써 전통적인 책자 자전의 사용률이 저하되고 있다. 이런 현상은 스마트폰의 확산에 따른 다양한 ‘자전’ 애플리케이션의 개발로 인하여 더욱 심화될 것으로 예 상된다. 이러한 사회적 환경의 변화는 학생들에게 자전의 활용 방법을 안내해줄 필요가 생겨났다. 곧 자전을 통한 한자 학습이 전자사전 등 여타의 도구를 사용한 한자 학습과는 비교할 수 없는 여러 가지 장점을 지녔다는 사실을 분명하게 인식하도 록 해주어야 한다. 그리하여 비록 자전 사용 방법의 습득이 간단한 일은 아니지만 이를 장악하여 익숙히 사용하는 능력을 배양해주어야 한다. 자전을 활용하지 않고 한자를 학습할 경우 모호한 정보로 인하여 한자에 대한 이해가 잘못되고 학습 의욕이 저하되는 폐해가 발생할 수 있다. 자전을 사용하고 자 할 때 자음색인, 총획색인, 부수색인을 이용하는 세 방법 모두가 그다지 쉽지 않은 일임도 사실이다. 하지만 한자·한문 학습자는 자전을 사용하여 공부를 하지 않으면 안 된다. 이에 자전의 구성 면모 서문, 범례, 본문, 부록, 색인 등을 소개하 였고, 마지막으로 자전의 효율적 사용 방법을 모색해 보았다. 자전을 효율적으로 사용하는 구체적 방법으로는, 분류수록 체계의 장점을 활용 하는 방법, 의항의 관계에서 파생 원리를 터득하는 방법, 표제어의 숙독을 통해 어휘력을 신장하는 방법, 용례와 어휘에서 전통 문화에 대한 흥미를 진작시키는 방법 등 네 가지를 제시해 보았다. 『論語』에 “工欲善其事, 必先利其器.”[장인이 자기 일을 잘하고 싶으면 반드시 먼저 그 연장을 예리하게 갈아 놓아야 한다.]라는 말이 있다. 한자·한문을 공부하 는 사람에게 자전은 가장 기본적인 연장의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 자전이라는 연장 을 효율적으로 사용할 줄 아는 사람과 모르는 사람은 학습 효과가 시간이 갈수록 차이가 벌어지게 된다. 지금까지 고찰한 내용이 자전이라는 연장을 예리하게 만들 어 효율적으로 사용하는 데에 일정한 도움이 되기를 기대해 본다.

對剛開始學習漢字漢文的初學者來說首先遇到的難關就是掌握字典的使用方法。而且要達到能够信手使用的熟練程度是需要一段時間訓練的。這種先掌握使用方法然後纔能開始學習的現象，在使用其他外語辭典時是沒有的事情. 這是基於擁有三千餘年悠久歷史的漢字的特殊性, 這一點不必再言。近來初學者學習字典使用方法的周邊環境, 與三十餘年前比起來很不利。由於電子字典的廣泛普及和網絡字典的迅速發達, 傳統書本型字典的使用率越來越低了。可以料想, 随着智能手機的普及所带來的多種字典應用程序系統的開發, 將令這一現象日趨嚴重. 這種社會環境的變化, 觸發了引導初學者掌握字典活用方法的需要。應該立即讓這些初學者清楚地認識到一個事實，那就是用傳統紙册型字典來學習漢字漢文擁有若干用其他電子字典等工具來學習時沒法比的優點。這样, 雖然會用傳統纸册型字典幷不是件簡單的事情, 但是應該掌握這一技能, 應該培養熟練使用這類字典的能力。如果學習漢字漢文時不使用字典, 則會因爲信息的含糊不清而造成對漢字理解的不準確, 从而導致學習熱情降低。字典的使用時一般采用音節索引、筆劃索引和部首索引這三種檢索方式, 事實上這三種方式都不簡單。不過, 學習漢字漢文的人是不能不用字典來學習的。這裏筆者先介紹了字典的構成樣式序文、凡例、正文、附錄和索引等内容, 然後探討了有效地活用字典的方案。關於有效活用字典的方法, 本文具体提出了四個方案: 一是, 充分活用分類收錄體系的優點; 其二, 從義項之間的關係上領會字義派生原理, 其三, 通過熟讀標題詞語來加强把握詞語的能力; 其四, 通過書證和詞語提高對古代傳統文化的興趣。 ≪論語≫中說“工欲善其事, 必先利其器。” 孔子這句話的意思是工匠想要搞好他的工作, 一定要先使他的工具鋒利好用。對學習漢字漢文的人來說, 字典可謂是最基本的工具。是否能够有效地活用字典這一工具, 其學習效果随着時間的推移差别將愈發 顯著。筆者希望通過上述考察對能够對有效地活用字典這一工具起到一定的作用。

For those who begin to learn Chinese characters and classical Chinese, the first major difficulty that they encounter is learning how to use a Chinese character dictionary. In order to use a Chinese character dictionary skillfully, they need a certain period of training. Such a process of learning how to use a dictionary is not required in studying other foreign languages. Needless to say, it is a problem arising from the peculiarity of Chinese characters that have 3000 years’ long history. In learning the method of using a Chinese character dictionary, today’s environment is far unfavorable compared to 30 years ago. With the popularization of electronic dictionaries and the development of the Internet, conventional Chinese character dictionaries are being used less, and this trend is expected to grow worse with the development of various ‘Chinese character dictionary’ applications that run on smart phones. Such a change in social environment has raised the necessity to guide beginners in using a Chinese character dictionary. That is, they need to learn clearly that learning Chinese characters using a Chinese character dictionary has a number of advantages incomparable with Chinese character learning using other tools like an electronic dictionary. Although it is not a simple job to acquire the method of using a Chinese character dictionary, learners should master the method and be able to use a Chinese character dictionary skillfully. If one learns Chinese characters without using a dictionary he/she may misunderstand Chinese characters due to ambiguous information and this may discourage the learner from keep learning Chinese characters. In using a Chinese character dictionary, the three methods based on pronunciation index, stroke count index, and radical index are all difficult. Nevertheless, Chinese character and classical Chinese learners must use a Chinese character dictionary for their study. Thus, this study introduced the general structure of a Chinese character dictionary including foreword, explanatory notes, main body, appendixes, and indexes and, lastly, designed methods for the efficient use of a Chinese character dictionary. For the efficient use of a Chinese character dictionary, we proposed four methods: first, the method to utilize the advantages of the classification system; second, the method to master the principles of derivation in the relation of semantic items; third, the method to develop vocabulary competence through the perusal of lexical entries; and fourth, the method to stimulate interest in traditional culture using illustrations and words. In ≪論語≫ is said, “工欲善其事, 必先利其器”(“If an artisan wants to do his work well first he should sharpen his tools”). For those who study Chinese characters and classical Chinese, a Chinese character dictionary is one of the most basic tools. Between those who know how to use the tool efficiently and those who do not, the gap in the effect of learning will grow larger over time. We expect that the contents of discussion in this study may contribute to the efficient use of a Chinese character dictionary as a sharpened tool.
