러시아 상트페테르부르크 말느이 드라마 극장(Малый драматический теат р)의 예술감독이자 러시아 현대연극을 대표하는 연출가 레프 도진(Л. Дóдин, 1944- )은 우리 관객들에게도 익숙한 이름이다. 그는 자신의 대표작품이라고 할 수 있는 <형제자매들>, <가우데아무스>, <바냐 아저씨>를 국내 무대에 소개하며 소위 말하는 러시아 사실주의 연극의 정수란 무엇인지 제대로 보여주었다. 도진의 무대는 역사의 흐름 속 ‘특별한 시간’을 착출하여 그 시간을 연극적으로 분석하고 비평하고자 하는 일관된 태도를 견지한다. 이를 통해 그가 하고 있는 질 문은 오직 하나이다.“우리가 어떻게 살아왔는가?”라는 역사 위의 인간으로서의 원 초적 질문이 바로 그것이다. 이는 역사 속 부박했던 시간에 대한 참과 거짓 그리고 선과 악의 실체를 무대 위에 펼쳐보이고자 하는 연출적 의지에 다름 아니며, 이를 통해 도진은 말느이 극장을 중심으로 자신들의 연극을 일종의 ‘장르’로 만들어 왔 다. 국내 무대에 소개된, 전쟁 후 러시아의 한 집단농장 주민들의 삶을 형상화 한 대서사시 <형제자매들>과 낡고 병든 군부대 속 젊은 군인들의 우정과 배반, 사랑 과 증오를 통해 개인의 기억에 새겨진 사회의 폭력과 거짓으로 점철된 집단의 역 사를 고발한 <가우데아무스>가 그 대표적인 작품일 것이다. 본고는 이러한 도진의 대표작품에 대한 공연비평적 시선에서 그가 무대에서 일 관되게 제시하고 있는 질문을 고찰하고, 이를 통해 역사적 흐름 위에 새겨진 개인 의 삶을 무대 위에 풀어나가는 레프 도진만의 특별한 연극적 방법론에 대한 연구 를 진행하였다.

Lev Dodin, a representative Russian director of contemporary theatre as an artistic director of Maly Drama Theatre of St. Petersburg, is definitely one of the well-known foreign theatre directors to Korean audience. We have met some of his productions: <Brothers and Sisters>(2006.05.20.-21), <Gaudeamus>(2001.7.6.-10), <Uncle Vanya>(2010.05.05.-08) in LG ARTS CENTRE. Some critics said that it was an opportunity to experience the essence of the Russian psychological realism. His other representative theatres can be included as below: <Brothers and Sisters> having been the leading production for over 20 years in the company, <Claustrophobia> characterized with free staging energy inferred from actors’ improvisation, <Evil> with 9 hours long production written by Dostoyevski, <Chibengur> showing the socio-philosophy of A. Platonov, <Platonov> proving that Chekhov can be taken off to provoke, and <Московский хор> reflecting the gloomy post-war society. In fact, it is important to recognize that there is a through-line throughout in all of his theatres, what Dodin has tried to ask us: “How have we gone through the past?” We can take a look at the two epics such as <Brothers and Sisters> and <Gaudeamus> to answer his question. The former describes the peoples’ lives at kolkhoz in Russia after the war, in which only wives and girls are left in the village. The latter treats the friendship, betrayal, love and hatred in diseased and rotten military camp, that is, it is the story about the violence and falsehood of not only our society but also our history. After all, how does Dodin express the life in his theatre? What does he intend to show the audience in the end? This thesis aims to analyze his view to the life through studying two theatres <Brothers and Sisters> and <Gaudeamus> performed in Korea. The piece of life that he calls on the stage is just the special moment of the history. It can be the important key to understand not only a series of theatre of Lev Dodin but also the other theatres trying to remember the history on the stage. Thus, it can also help to understand Korean theatres, which have tried to stage the past or history. I hope this thesis will set a foothold to look sort of theatres more critically.
