본고에서 논의하고자 하는 것은 李奎報의 佛敎關聯詩를 佛敎詩의 관점에서 조명함에 있어 불교관련시의 주제를 고찰함으로써, 불교시 일반의 시 의식과 시적 특질을 구명하는 실마리를 찾고자 하는 것이다. 불교적 사유와 정서를 근간으로 하는 불교시 일반의 특질을 찾아내는데 있어 이규보의 시를 대상으로 한다는 것은 그 자체로서 새로운 일이다. 이에 관한 기존의 연구는 대개 논의의 대상으로 삼은 시의 분류와 분석에 있어 기존의 禪詩연구의 범주를 적용하려 한다는 점과, 특히 이규보의 시를 禪師들의 선시에 지나치게 대응시킴으로써 그가 적극적으로 불교적 교리를 실천한 居士이거나 禪의 이치를 체득한 禪僧으로서의 삶을 살았던 것으로 보게 하는 오류가 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이규보의 불교관련시를 불교시의 관점에서 논의하기 위해서는 이규보와 그의 시대, 그리고 그의 문학에 있어 불교적 사유와 정서가 어떤 역할을 하였는지를 밝히는 일이 선행되어야 한다. 그것은 불교시의 근간인 불교적 사유와 정서가 그의 문학에 어떻게 자리잡고 있으며, 그러므로 해서 문학작품에 드러나고 있는 실질이 무엇인지를 밝히는 것으로 귀결된다. 본고는 이규보 불교관련시의 주제로서 空的思惟의 詩的 受容이라는 측면과 自我省察의 측면을 설정하고, 해당되는 시를 분석하였다. 특징적인 것은 이규보 자신의 불교에 대한 본질적 이해와 주의깊은 직관적 성찰을 바탕으로 한 사유의 저변 위에서 그의 불교관련시가 시로서의 문학성과 불교 교리적 사변성이 어느 한쪽으로 치우치지 않고 조화되어 있다는 점이다. 이규보의 불교관련시에 대한 논의는 주제에 관한 논의와 더불어 그가 살았던 불교문화의 토양 위에서 불교에 대한 작가로서의 의식이 반영되고 있는 양상과, 고려시대 불교시 전체의 구도 속에서 불교시 일반의 특질과 의의를 파악하는 작업이 진행되어야 할 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 기대되는 것은 이규보의 불교 인식과 불교시에 보이는 국면들이 이규보의 개인적인 성향으로서 뿐만이 아니라, 당시의 불교에 대한 일반적 정서 또는 불교 문학적 성취와의 관계 속에서 어떤 위상을 가지고 있는지를 살필 수 있으리라는 점이다. 이 점이 밝혀진다면 본고의 논의가 궁극적으로 추구하는 바 이규보의 佛敎關聯詩를 통한 불교시 일반의 특질을 구명한다고 하는 문제에 한 걸음 더 나아갈 수 있을 것이다.

This paper intends to find out the general consciousness and characteristics of Buddhist poetry by inquiring into Lee Gyu-Bo(李奎報)'s Buddhist-related poetry from the viewpoint of Buddhist poetry. It is a new matter in itself that Lee Gyu-Bo's poetry was studied in finding out the general characteristics of Buddhist poetry based on Buddhist emotion. The existing studies regarding that usually contain following two points. One is that they intended to apply the scope of existing Seon poetry(禪詩) in the classification and analysis of the poetry, the subject of discussion. The other is that they considered Lee Gyu-Bo was a man belonging to Geosa Buddhism who positively practiced the creed of Buddhist or who perceived the principle of Seon(禪) and lived as a Buddhist priest, by having too much his poetry cope with the Seon poetry of saints. With reference to these points, in this paper, I looked at Lee Gyu-Bo's position as a writer from two viewpoints. One is that his recognition of Buddhism took a neutral attitude in that in his days there were two trends of thought; that is, Geosa Buddhism (居士佛敎: kind of religion in which a person undergoes Buddhist discipline at one's home without belonging to any sect) represented as Lee Ja-Hyeon in the early term of Koyro dynasty and Gyeolsa Buddhism (結社佛敎: kind of religion led by a group organized to desperately have the corrupted Buddhism corrected) represented as Su Seon-sa in the latter term of Koryo dynasty. The other is that Buddhism lies at the root of his ideas in spite of the fact that Lee Gyu-Bo was not a Buddhist who lived his life on the basis of Buddhist religion or discipline but a literary man who sought his fortune adhering to Confucian ideas. It is the point that his literature could be freely escaped from the viewpoint of philosophy, since he was a new nobleman with a new spirit of the times and lived the times during which the Buddhist cultural consciousness was accepted as it is that have to be considered. This point is significant in the study of Buddhist poetry in that some of literary men of Choson dynasty period during which a philosophical world view prevailed remembered Buddhist poetry. In conclusion, Lee Gyu-Bo has significant meaning in that he wrote Buddhist-related poems and collected such poems from the standpoint of not a Buddhist but a bureaucratic intellectual at the height of the times Buddhism based on cycles of life prevailed. In order to discuss about Lee Gyu-Bo's Buddhism-related poetry from the viewpoint of Buddhist poetry, it is necessary to inquire into in advance the effect of Buddhist idea and emotion on his days and his literature as well as to inquire into how such Buddhist emotion was represented and reflected in his literature. In this paper, I considered that the reason Lee Gyu-Bo had not referred to concretely Buddhist principle or actual problems was related to the political situation under seizure of the political power by military force, looking at his recognition of Buddhist through his poems. As a result, it was revealed that his poems contained critical viewpoints on the basis of the essential understanding of Buddhism and intuitive self-examination. In addition, I examined some works among his Buddhist-related poems representing the pure emotional aspects of Buddhist poetry. The poems that belong to this kind was those which symbolized Buddhist emotion feeling the emptiness of life, showing Lee Gyu-Bo's poems, based on dynamic and static elements, could become typical Buddhist poems. Through this study, it is expected that it is possible to find out in what position Lee Gyu-Bo's recognition of Buddhist and his Buddhist poems were placed in relation to the general emotion of Buddhism in those days or Buddhist literature. If this point is revealed, the study of the general characteristics of Buddhist poetry through Lee Gyu-Bo's Buddhist-related poems will advance more.
