As Japanese has a similar grammatic structure to Korean, Japanese students who learn Korean are outstanding among other students when understanding and learning Korean honorifics. However, the merit sometimes becomes a cause of learners' careless errors. Thus, this research aims to seek a way to efficiently teach Korean honorifics to Japanese students to minimize these errors. To this end, this thesis has three main parts. First, comparison between Korean and Japanese predicted mistakes on honorific expressions that Japanese learners could make the most. Second, a survey was conducted to see how Japanese learners use Korean honorifics. Third, based on the wrong expressions researched, alternative teaching methods were suggested. As an example, role-play which is based on communicative competence theory was included in a class model and an exemplary lesson plan. When teaching Korean honorifics to Japanese, the followings should be considered. First, as shown in the survey, a simple division among subject, object, and specific word honorifics in grammar class should be restricted. Second, in choosing a class model and forming a lesson's content, differences of honorifics between the two languages should be fully taken into account. Third, abundant examples of honorifics related with close social relations of learners should be included in textbooks. In the paper's body, role-play based teaching model and contents were suggested considering the above mentioned. The model is a desirable method for Korean teaching as it gives students chances to activelyparticipate in the class by doing their roles with their classmates.
