본 연구의 목적은 미국에서 알츠하이머 병으로 고통 받는 노인 부모를 돌보는 아들의 독특한 부양의 역할을 검토하는 것입니다. 의학과 과학기술의 발달, 생활의 질 향상과 영양개선 등은 인간의 평균 기대수명을 연장시켰으며, 아울러 사망률과 출생률의 감소는 노인인구의 증가와 함께 여러 가지 노인성 만성질환을 유발시키고, 특히 노인성 치매, 알츠하이머 병 등의 이환율이 급격히 증가하면서 노인의 부양문제가 전 세계적인 사회문제로 급부상하고 있는 실정이다. 세계적인 현상인 노인 인구의 증가는 미국에서도 인구 통계학적으로 개인, 가족 사회에 큰 영향과 변화를 가져오고 있다. 즉, 미국의 많은 세대가 공감하듯이, 정치적 이슈와 공공 정책은 필연적으로 고령화 문제를 고리로 연결되었다고 공감하고 있다. 미국의 사회 보장제도와 메디 케어의 프로그램은 만성질환으로 타인의 도움 없이 생활하기 어려운 노인에게 사회 공동 책임으로 부담하는 보건, 의료, 요양, 복지 등 다양한 서비스를 장기간 제공해 일상생활을 지원하는 시스템으로, 치매, 알츠하이머 병 등 노인성질환을 앓고 있는 노인을 부양하고 있는 많은 가족들에게 커다란 혜택은 헤아릴 수 없는 도움의 제도이다. 알츠하이머환자의 일상적인 질병 특성으로 가족 전체와 주부양자의 신체, 심리 정서적 피로는 물론 사회 경제적 고갈로 소진을 야기 시키게 된다. 아울러, 알츠하이머 병을 앓고 있는 노인의 부양은 가족 공동 책임이라기보다 가족 구성원 중 누군가 일부 또는 한사람(주부양자; 배우자, 며느리, 딸 등 여성가족), 즉 여성에게 전적으로 의존하고 있는 것이 일반적인 상황이다. 따라서 본 논문은 문헌연구를 통하여 미국에서 알츠하이머 병으로 고통 받는 노인 부모를 돌보는 가족구성원 가운데 특별히 아들의 독특한 부양의 역할을 검토하는 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to review the unique caregiving roles of sons in caring for elderly parents suffering from Alzheimer’s. The growth of the elderly population is a worldwide phenomenon. In the United States, this remarkable demographic shift profoundly impacts individuals, families, and society at large. Political dialogue and public policy are inevitably intertwined with aging issues that resonate with many generations of Americans. Indeed the two great enduring social programs of our time, Social Security and Medicare, are specifically designed to afford some level of protection for current and future generations of elderly Americans. One of the single most important issues confronting the elderly population worldwide is caregiving. These men will face the same set of challenges all caregivers face, but with considerably less experience in care giving than their female counterparts. Furthermore, as they endeavor to navigate their way through the various complex systems inextricably bound up with caregiving, be they family systems, healthcare and health insurance systems, government systems and others, these men will find themselves seeking support from social workers, practitioners and advocates whose primary frame of reference is typically women. It is imperative, therefore, that the research community thoroughly studies all aspects of care giving as they pertain to caregiver sons. The benefits to both the sons and their parental care receivers would be immeasurable.
