The Middle Yeats explores the full range of human experiences to restore meaning to life. But he again chooses the other world for his Mask, which conflicts with his strong love of life. Consequently his great middle poems are the ostensible embodiment of his transcendent Mask with ironies denigrating its value and asserting the unique value of life. The conflict between Yeats's unsatisfactory Mask and life is sometimes expressed by an opposition of art and life with great effect because this image of art is severely contrary to his life-focused aesthetic of this time. Yeats's view of literature as “imaginative saturnalia” embedded in his theory of Mask is impaired through the embodiment of his unsatisfactory Mask.
