분명 페터스의 지도는 새로운 지도가 아니며, 그가 주장하는 10가지 신지도학 기준 역시 정적성과 장방형 경위성망을 만족할 경우 대부분 충족시킬 수 있는 것이고, 나머지 역시 모호하고 주관적인 기준임을 확인하였다. 그러나 페터스는 메르카토르 도법이 지닌 약점을 집요하게 과대 선전하면서 자신의 지도가 지닌 평등성을 메르카토르 지도의 유럽중심 식민제국성과 극적으로 대비시켰다. 단지 선전에 탁월한 페터스의 개인적 능력이나 당시의 시대적 분위기만으로 페터스 도법의 대유행을 설명할 수 없다. 어쩌면 페터스는 지도가 지니는 상징성을 훌륭하게 간파하여 이를 통해 자신의 세계관을 전파하려 노력했던 것이다. 결국 페터스 논쟁은 정확성이라는 기술적 관점이 아니라 지도의 상대적 가치에 근거해 지도학의 본질에 대한 논쟁을 유발시켰다는 점에서 지도학에 커다란 영향을 주었다고 볼 수 있다.

There was no doubt that the Peters world map is not a new one. Most of 10 new categories which Peters suggested were satis-fied, if any world map was equipped with the fidelity of area and the rectangular coordinates. It is ascertained that several other categories were also vague and subjective. Peters propagated the weaknesses of Mercator projection sensationally, and he drew the equality of his own map into comparison with the Euro-centricity and colonial-imperialism of Mercator's world map. It was impossible, however, to explain the extraordinary popularity of Peters's world map only for the reasons of the private ability to propagate his map and the social atmosphere of 1970s and 1980s. He read the symbolism of map correctly and he endeavored to propagate his world view on the ground of it. It is concluded that he had done cartography a service in terms that he made a controversy about the nature of maps on the basis of not the scientific correctness but the relative value of map.
