본 연구는 요르단의 수도 암만 남쪽에 위치한 마다바 시의 성 조지 교회에 있는 마다바지도의 지도학적 의미에 관하여 고찰한 것이다. 마다바 지도는 세계에서 가장 오래된 정밀 지도자료이다. 565년경에 성서도시 메데바, 현재 지명으로는 마다바에 건립된 비잔틴교회의 모자이크 바닥으로 제작된 이 지도는 2백만 개의 모자이크조각으로 구성되었었다. 이 지도는 1884년에야 재발견 되었고 1896년 그 위에 그리스 정교 성 조지 교회가 신축되고 나서야 그 진가가 재조명되기 시작하였다. 마다바 모자이크 지도는 원래 가로 세로 15.5 m x 6 m의 크기로 북쪽으로는 레바논에서 남쪽으로는 나일삼각주에 이르는 광범위한 지역을 묘사했으나 현재는 전체의 1/3 정도만이 남아있다. 마다바 지도는 일반적인 T-O 지도와는 달리 성서의 세계를 묘사하는 것에서 벗어나 그 자체 훌륭한 지리학적, 지형학적 지도로서의 가치를 지닌다. 일관된 축척의 부재, 일부 공간의 누락, 지나친 종교적 믿음의 강조 등과 같은 결함에도 불구하고 마다바 지도는 그 지도학적인 정확성으로 인해 근대 지도학이 등장하기 전의 팔레스타인 지도 중에서 가장 오래되고 정밀한 지도로 간주되고 있다.

This paper examines the cartographic value of the Madaba Mosaic Map in Jordan.The Madaba Map is the oldest detailed cartographic document in the world. Made about the year 565 A.D. from more than two million colored stone cubes, the map formed the mosaic floor of a Byzantine church in the biblical town of Medeba, today Madaba in Jordan. It was rediscovered only in 1884, but its unique character was recognised only in 1896, after the new Greek Orthodox Church of St.George had been built over it. The map originally covered an area of more than 15.5 m by 6 m with a geographic sweep from Lebanon in the North to the Nile delta in the south. Less than a third of the map has survived, Unlike T-O Map, the Madaba Map is not just a collection of pretty pictures to illustrate the Holy Bible it is in fact a real geographical and topographical map. In spite of some inaccuracies such as the lack of scale, lack of space, the overriding importance of religious convictions it is cartographically correct to a considerable degree and is not only oldest but also the most exact map of palestine before modern cartography.
