청옹 이명기는 17세기 후반 숙종조 조선왕조의 사대부들 사이의 당쟁이 격화되고 있었던 시기에, 중앙정부의 정치권력에서 점차 더욱 멀리 소외되고 있었던 밀양 사림을 대표하였던 인물의 한 사람이다. 그는 임진란 전후로 밀양의 내진리에 정착한 벽진이씨의 후예로서, 한강 정구 및 여헌 장현광의 학문 연원에 접속하였던 부형들이 전수한 家學을 토대로 학문을 성취하고, 부형들로부터 이어진 世交를 이어받아, 과거를 통하여 중앙정부의 관직에 진출하려고 노력하였다. 그는 25세의 젊은 나이에 진사가 되었는데, 집안의 喪故와 경신환국과 임술고변, 기사환국, 갑술환국 등 더욱 격화되어가는 당쟁의 와중에 到記科에서 直赴會試의 은전을 받았지만 실현되지 못하였고, 예순이 넘은 만년에 문과에 급제하였지만 그 또한 관직에 임용되지 못한 채로 별세하였다. 나는 이 글에서 청옹의 생애 전 과정이 숙종조의 당쟁이 격화된 시점과 맞물려 있음을 주목하고, 그 생애 이력의 파란이 당쟁과 관련이 있음을 방증하는 한편, 당쟁의 시대에 지방 학교의 건설과 교육에 종사하였던 지방 사림의 역할과 그 시문의 문학적 성취와 특징적 면모를 드러내려고 하였다. 이를 위하여 ��청옹문집��에 실린 시문을 개관하는 한편, 문집에 수록되지 않은 시문 십여 건을 찾아내어 그 내용을 소개하였고, 또한 청옹의 시문은 시어가 平順하고 義理가 雅正하다는 기왕의 논평을 기반으로, 이와 관련됨직한 몇몇 시문을 예로 들어 그 의미와 의의를 유추하여 논증하고, 산문으로 ｢紅紙說｣ 한 편을 분석하여 당대의 인재등용에 대한 풍자의 의의와 小品文으로서의 의의와 특징을 논하였다.

The fortunes of certain areas and a family often depends on the activities of the special characters, such as an educator and scholar, or politician or religion, etc. Such trends are more evident in the 17th century Joseon society. Such as one of the typical example, Byeokjin-Lee(碧珍李氏) family in Mil-yang[密陽] area is one of the most appropriate cases. Cheong-Ong(聽翁) Li-MyeonGi(李命夔) was one of the prominent Confucian scholars in the Mil-yang area of early 17th century Joseon-Dynasty. He inherited learning from his father and his uncles, and he has passed twice in the civil service examination. However, the Joseon dynasty was never appointed him as a bureaucrat. That's because of factional fighting that was so have severe in the end of the 17th century of the Joseon Dynasty. As like his father and his uncles, he belong to a Party of South[南人], and the party was then excluded in the core of political power of King Sukjong's royal court[肅宗朝]. During most of his life, he has devoted himself to education and the construction of local school in his hometown. In this paper, I explained a summary for his life, and I offered here a list of his works that I founded out some of his works that had been missing and forgotten in his collection of works. And I pointed out some particular points of his poems which appeals to the imagination. In conclusion, my assessment for the literary achievements of his poems is as follows. His poems had been depicted the rural life very comfortably with very plain and easy words. His poetry is well described the delicate moral sensibilities that include the love between parent and child, and the friendship between brother and brothers. I think that was one of the way of self-expression, that had been frustrated by the intense political parties conflict reflection of An excuse for passing certificatewhich lasted in his lifetime.
