종교개혁 시대에 개혁가들이 선교에 대한 분명한 인식을 가지고 있었으나 실제적인 선교를 거의 수행하지는 못하였다. 그러나 그 본질과 실체에 대해서 심각한 오해를 받은 나머지 한 때 이단적 취급을 받았고 급진적 종교개혁의 일원으로 간주되었던 재세례파는 오히려 종교개혁 시대에 선교의 선봉장 역할을 감당하였다. 재세례파는 종교 개혁가들이 교회 개혁에 몰두한 나머지 선교 사역의 실천적인 영역이 미진했을 때에, 재세례파는 모든 신자가 다 선교사라는 의식을 가지고 선교 사역에 매진하였다. 그들은 말로만 복음을 전파할 뿐만 아니라 제자도의 실천을 통한 신실한 섬김의 삶을 통하여 복음을 증거하였다. 그리하여 당대에 가장 많은 선교사를 배출하였으며 개신교와 가톨릭을 합친 것 보다 압도적으로 많은 수의 개종자를 얻었다. 재세례파는 개신교 선교의 최초의 개척자였다.
재세례파의 이러한 놀랄만한 선교적 사역의 성과가 있었음에도 불구하고 그동안 선교의 역사에서는 재세례파의 선교가 정식으로 다루어지지 않았다. 금세기에 들어서 재세례파에 대한 연구가 그 어느 때보다 활발해지고 있다. 재세례파의 본질이 산상수훈을 통한 제자도의 실천과 성경적인 교회의 본질인 공동체성의 회복에 있음을 인식하기 시작한 마당에 16세기 종교개혁시대의 선교에 선봉에 섰던 재세례파의 선교적 교회의 실체와 의미를 재조명할 필요가 있다. 그리하여 종교개혁 시대의 선교에 대한 균형 잡힌 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

In the period of the Reformation, the Reformer such as Luther and Calvin had the sound theology of missions, but very little happened by way of a missionary outreach by the Reformers. The Anabaptists who had been misunderstood in its essence and identity were actively involved in a remarkable program of missionary outreach during the Reformation period. The Anabaptists were at the vanguard in missions of the Reformation period. By the middle of the sixteenth century Anabaptist missionaries were preaching in every state of European country. Whereas the Reformers no longer considered the Great Commission as binding, the Anabaptists were among the first to make the Commission mandatory for all believers. The Anabaptists were the first pioneer of Protestant missions.
Even though there had been remarkable missionary results of the Anabaptists in the Reformation period, the Anabaptists’ missions were not accepted and dealt with as regular missions in the history of Protestant mission. There is a necessity to recognize the missions of the Anabaptists and study the reality of the Anabaptists’ missions in order to have a balanced evaluation of missions of the sixteenth century.
