In the 1960s, the renowned pioneer of video art Nam June Paik attempted to legitimize his work on philosophical and aesthetic grounds. One of Paik’s strategies was to associate his video art with cybernetics of Norbert Wiener. Paik maintained that video art and cybernetics share a common feature of feedback. Due to complicated feedback mechanisms, he argued, both fields escape deterministic control. For instance, since the artist’s manipulation of television images and the audience’s participation in it form complex feedback loops between the artist, artwork (television images), and audience, this whole process escapes deterministic control or prediction. The inherent indeterminism of video art fully legitimized audience participation in the process of art-making. Furthermore, Paik interpreted cybernetic feedback in terms of Buddhism and the oriental philosophy of Yin and Yang. Through cybernetics, Paik was able to recover his East Asian identity, as well as other oriental elements in Western video art.
