이 글은 김성일이 임진왜란 당시 어떤 인적 네트워크를 바탕으로 초유사 또는 경상우감사로서의 직무를 수행했고, 그것이 임진왜란의 극복에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 가늠하는데 주안점이 있다. 김성일은 전형적인 퇴계학파 계열의 학자·관료였지만 인간적 성향 및 기 질에 있어 조식 및 남명학파와의 친연성이 컸고, 최영경의 신원운동을 주도 하는 과정에서는 강우 남명학파권 인사들로부터 상당한 신망을 구축할 수 있었다. 이런 바탕 위에서 그는 김면·곽재우·정인홍 등 남명문인이 중심이 된 의병조직을 원만하게 지휘·조율하며 전란에 대응했고, 그 결과로서 호남 을 수호하는 바탕을 마련했다. 또한 김성일은 수십년 관료 생활의 과정에서 형성되어 있었던 조정 관료 들과의 인적 연계망을 최대한 활용하며 직무를 수행해 나갔다. 류성룡·김우 옹·유근·김응남 등 주로 동인계 중진 관료에 집중되어 있었던 관료적 네트워 크는 군량의 조달 및 확충에 크게 보탬이 되었다. 결국 김성일은 남명학파와 의 사적(私的) 네트워크와 재조 관료들과의 공적 네트워크를 효율적으로 작동시키며 공인으로서의 책무를 충실히 수행했던 것이다. 그가 통신사행에 따른 실보(失報)에도 불구하고 영남재조론(嶺南再造論)의 측면에서 긍정적 평가를 받는 이유도 여기에 있었다.

This paper has an emphasis to identify his networks to perform his duties as Choyusa or the provincial governor of Gyeongsang-u-do during the Japanese Invasion of Korea and related effects in overcoming the Japanese Invasion of Korea. Even though Kim Seong-il was a typical scholar and government official in Toigyeo School, he had intimacy with Jo Sik and Nammyeong School in humane inclination and temperament, and while he was leading Choi Yeong-gyeong’s Founder Remission Movement, he could build substantial trusts from Nammyeong School scholars in Gangwu area. Based on this foundation, he prepared for the war by smoothly commanding and mediating Uibyeong organization and as a result, he prepared for the base to protect Honam. Additionally, Kim Seong-il performed his duties through the maximum utilization of his personal network which was formed in the process of his government official career for decades. Bureaucratic network which was focused mostly on Easterners leading government officials like Ryu Seong-ryong, Kim Woo-ong, Yu Geun, Kim Eung-nam was very helpful to provision procurement and expansion. In other words, Kim Seong-il efficiently activated his private network with Nammyeong School and public network with government officials in the Royal Court and faithfully conducted his duties as a public figure. This is why he received a positive evaluation from the viewpoints of the theory of restoring by Yeongnam, even though he made wrong report after he came back from Japan as an ambassador.
