남명의 연보는 无悶堂 朴絪이 1628년 덕산에서 남명의 둘째 아들인 칠원 군수을 지낸 慕亭 曺次磨로부터 부탁을 받고 1636년 편찬을 하였 다. 그 후 謙齋 河弘度, 澗松 趙任道, 林谷 林眞., 寒沙 姜大遂 등 私淑人들의 수정 보완을 거쳐 1700년 발간된 .南冥先生別集.에 실려 처음 으로 세상에 널리 알려졌다. 그 후 1814년 무민당의 후손들이 .무민당 집.을 발간하면서 집안에 전해오던 무민당 手稿本이라고 추정되는 .남 명연보.를 저본으로 삼은 연보를 수록하여, 3종류의 연보가 전하고 있 다. 연보가 발간된 후 내암관련 문자 삭제, 구암과의 절교 문제 등으로 논란이 있었는데 내암 관련 문자는 삭제하는 것으로 정리한 반면 구암 과의 절교 문제에 있어서는 상세하게 기록해야 한다는 무민당의 견해 가 수고본에 그대로 기술되어 있으며, 반면 .남명선생별집.과 후에 발 간된 .무민당집.에는 내용은 대동소이하나 그 분량은 현저하게 줄어들 었다. 1800년대 들어 남명학파 학자들의 문집이 이 지역에서 많이 발간돼 남명 생애에 대한 자료가 많이 발견되어 보충할 필요성이 제기되고 또 연보의 내용도 일부분 거칠고 오류가 있다고 생각해 1897년 남명 선생편년을 간행했다. 남명편년은 그동안 제기되었던 연보의 오류들 을 바로 잡았을 뿐 아니라 대체로 연보의 기술 내용을 보충하고 있다. 특히 연보에는 덕계 수우당 한강 등 소수 문인들의 受學에 관한 기사가 있는데 반해 편년에는 남명 문인들의 受學에 관한 기사가 현저하게 늘었다. 이는 남명의 遺文들이 전해지지 않은 것이 너무 많아 당시 지역 선비들의 문집에서 관련 자료들을 구해 이를 보충하는데 초점을 맞춘 것으로 보인다.

Especially annual report, whereas there are articles on a small number of literati our study such as deokgye Suwoodang Hankang, the chronology, articles on study of Nammyeong Record who has significantly increased. This is that too many not transmitted statements that Nammyeong have left, obtain the relevant documents in the Proceedings of the Judges of our region at the time, it is expected to focus on that to replenish it.
