Insects Associated with Fungal Propagation in Pine Decay Wood
A wide variety of decay fungi inhabit and decompose pine tree, Pinus densiflora. There are 54 species of pine associated decay fungi that have been recorded in Korea. In order to investigate how fungal propagation is mediated by insect interaction, we collected decay fungi and insects dwelling inside P. densiflora in any part of their life cycles. Majority of the insects living in pine trees were larvae which created gallery as they feed on wood and fungal hyphae. Most of the galleries were infected with fungal hyphae identified as decay fungi: Trichaptum abietinum, Hyphodontia aspera, and Cryptoporus volvatus. As some larvae were difficult to identify morphologically, we performed Cox1 gene sequence analysis. Such process revealed that insect species we collected included many Carabidae. T. abietinum, H. aspera, and C. volvatus were associated with 7 genera (8 species), 2 genera (2 species), and 5 genera (5 species) of entomic specimens respectively.
