이 글은 大笑軒 趙宗道의 문학에 대한 생각과 문학작품 특히 시세계를 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 대소헌은 생원시에 합격한 뒤 安奇道察訪에 천거되었고, 그곳에 있으면서 退溪 李滉의 제자인 柳成)·金誠一·權好文 등과 교유하였다. 임진란이 일어나자 적극적으로 의병활동을 하였고, 정유재란 때 黃石山城에서 왜적을 맞아 싸우다가 전사하였다.
그는 호에 드러난 바와 같이 매우 호방하였으며, 성품과 행실이 고상하고 우뚝하였다. 그래서 부모에게 효성이 지극하였을 뿐만 아니라, 친척들에게 어질게 대하고, 벗들에게는 진심으로 대하였다고 한다. 이러한 성품과 행실은 문학에 그대로 나타났는데, 문학에 대하여는 매우 실용적인 생각을 가지고 있었다.
그는 ｢學校｣라는 일종의 策文에서, 학교는 문학을 詞章을 외워 科擧에 합격하기 위한 것이 되어서는 안 되며, 선현의 덕을 함양하여 자신을 수양하는 학문하는 곳이어야 한다고 하였는데, 이를 통해 문학보다는 학문을 중시하였음을 알 수 있다. 하지만, 그의 문학은 매우 뛰어났으며 여러 사람들로부터 인정을 받았다.
대소헌의 문학작품이 갖는 가치는 우선 문학작품은 그 사람의 인물됨됨이를 반영한다는 매우 오래된 생각을 바탕으로 발현이 되고 있다. 이는 공자와 맹자에게서 비롯된 ‘덕이 있는 사람은 반드시 훌륭한 말을 한다.[有德者 ,必有言]’이나 ‘그 시를 외우고, 그 글을 읽으면서 그 사람을 모르면 되겠는가?[誦其詩, 讀其文, 不知其人, 可乎?]’라는 말을 기초로 하여, 사람됨됨이[爲人]와 시를 짓는 것[爲詩] 혹은 글을 짓는 것[爲文]이 서로 다르지 않다는 것을 밝힌 것이다. 이러한 ‘사람됨됨이와 시를 짓는 한 것은 한 가지’라는 ‘爲人爲詩一道論’에 근거하여 선현들은 대소헌의 시가 그 인물과 마찬가지로 매우 훌륭하였음을 말하였다.
대소헌의 문학작품이 얼마나 뛰어난 것인가를 알 수 있는 오래된 논점의 하나는 ‘고기 한 점만 맛보면 솥 전체의 맛을 알 수 있다’는 ‘一臠全鼎可知論’이다. 이는 한 점의 저민 고기로 한 솥의 국맛을 알 수 있다는 것인데, 한 국자의 맛으로 전체 솥의 맛을 알 수 있다는 말과 같이 쓰이고 있다. 大笑軒 趙宗道가 남긴 얼마 되지 않는 작품을 보면 그의 작품이 진실로 ‘일련전정가지론’에 부합하는 것임을 알 수 있다. 岳堅山城에서 지은 시와 玄蘇에게 주는 시는 그 대표적인 예이며, 그 밖의 작품들도 여러 선인들이 말한 바와 같이 그의 性情과 氣格을 드러내는 뛰어난 작품들이라 할 수 있다.

In this paper, it was trying to examine the poetry of Jo Jong Do, Dae So Heon. Because there was few poetry of him, it is difficult to find serious studies on his poetry. But, in the past, our ancestors acknowledged high value of his literatures despite of small amount of them and highly appreciated them.
At first, the value of literatures of Dae So Heon is originated from very old thoughts that the literature reflects the personality of its author. As mentioned by Confucius and Mencius, on the basis of sentences, 'Ladies and gentlemen must use great words'[有德者 ,必有言] or 'If you memorize someone's poetry and read his/her writings, is it possible that you can't understand his/her personality?'[誦其詩, 讀其文, 不知其人, 可乎?] it was found the personality of someone[爲人] composing the poetry[爲詩] and writing[爲文] are all same. Like this thoughts, 'the personality of someone and composing the poetry are same.'(爲人爲詩一道論) our ancestors said his poetry is very good as much as his personality.
One of old issues about how exceptional literatures of Dae So Heon are is the thoughts, 'After tasting a slice of meat, it is possible to understand overall taste in the caldron'.(一臠全鼎可知論) That is, it means if you taste a slice of ground meat, you can also understand overall taste of the soup in the caldron. In other words, a spoon of the soup guides overall taste in the caldron. After examining small amounts of his pieces, it is possible to understand they are really closely related with this thoughts. Representative examples are the poetry written in the castle in Mt. Akgeon and given to Hyeon So and it is also possible to say other pieces without them are also wonderful pieces expressing his personality and dignity as mentioned by many ancestors.
