본고는 지난 20여 년간 진행되어온 남명학파에 관한 연구를 종합, 검토하는 논문이다. 지금까지 남명학파에 관한 연구는 아주 다양한 측면에서 진행되어 왔는데 본고는 그 중에서도 특히 남명학파의 거시적 동향에 관한 내용이 포함된 논문을 모아서 분석대상으로 삼았다.
분석대상 논문은 우선 통시적 연구와 시대별 연구로 나누었으며, 시대별 연구는 다시 남명학파의 형성 및 전성기에 관한 연구, 남명학파의 몰락 및 쇠퇴기에 관한 연구, 남명학파의 부흥기에 관한 연구 등 세 시기로 나누어 검토하였다.
사실 지금까지 진행되어 온 통시적 관점의 연구는 주로 남명학파의 동향을 중심으로 진행되었는데, 인조반정의 가해자와 피해자 가운데 피해자에 해당하는 북인만 연구해온 것이라 볼 수 있다. 그 결과 남명학파의 공(共)보다는 과(過)가 부각되었다는 점을 부인하기는 어렵다. 가해자인 서인에 대한 연구가 병행되어야 입체적인 연구가 이루어질 것이다.
시대별 연구도 자료의 한계성 때문에 더 이상 크게 진보할 가능성을 찾아보기 어렵다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위해서는 새로운 자료 발굴은 물론 자료 해석에 있어서도 적극적인 자세로 임하는 것이 필요하다.

In this article, I put together several studies related to the Nam-myoung school which have been progressing for last twenty years. So far, the studies on the Nam-myoung school have been conducted in various aspects. I particularly collected data containing macroscopic movements of the Nam-myoung school and carried out an analysis of those papers. They were divided into diachronic study and periodic one, and the periodic study was divided into three parts: formation and golden age of the Nam-myoung school, collapse and decadence of the Nam-myoung school and rehabilitation of the Nam-myoung school.
Actually, the macroscopic studies have been proceeded mainly with the movements of the Nam-myoung school. They were focused on only the North-party(北人) which was the victim of ‘The coup of Injo’ between the victim and the assailant. As a result, it is hard to deny that the fault of the Nam-myoung school was magnified rather than the contribution of theirs. If we study the West-party(西人), the offender in parallel with the North-party(北人), multilateral study will be made.
It is hard to find the possibility of progress in the periodic study because of its limitation of data. To overcome this problem, we need not only to excavate materials but also to engage in the interpretation of data actively.
