본 논문은 경상대학교 남명학연구소 개소 20주년을 맞아 남명학연구소를 중심으로 지금까지의 남명학 연구에 대해 시기별로 발전 양상을 살펴본 것이다. 1990년 경상대학교 남명학연구소 설립을 기준으로 1990년 이전과 남명학연구소 설립 후인 1990년부터 2011년까지를 남명선생 탄신 500주년이 되는 2001년을 기점으로 삼아 전후로 나누어 살펴보았다.
우리나라에서 남명 조식 선생에 대한 연구가 본격적으로 시작된 시점은 1980년대 후반이다. 1980년대 후반 김충렬 교수에 의해 학계에 알려지기 시작한 남명학은 1990년 경상대학교 남명학연구소 설립을 기점으로 비약적인 발전을 해왔다. 남명 중심의 연구에서 범위를 확대해 남명 제자들을 통해 남명사상의 계승 양상을 구명해 남명 정신이 우리나라 선비 정신의 본보기로 인식하게 하는데 결정적인 역할을 했다.
2001년 남명탄신 500주년을 맞아 남명학과 다른 학파와의 비교를 통해 16세기 유학사에서 남명학의 특징을 학계에 널리 알렸으며, 외국 학자들과의 교류를 통해 남명학의 국제화에도 많은 기여를 했다.
지금껏 경상대학교 남명학 연구소를 중심으로 남명과 남명학파에 대한 연구는 꾸준히 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 남명학 연구의 발전 과제도 적지 않다.
20여년 동안 ‘남명’이란 주제로 수많은 연구 성과물들을 세상에 내놓았지만, 아직 남명 선생에 대한 일반 대중들의 인지도는 적어도 경남을 벗어나지 못하고 있는 형편이다. 굳이 퇴계선생과 비교하지 않더라고 남명의 정신과 학문이 우리나라 대표적인 선비정신의 표상으로 전 국민들이 인식할 때 까지 관계자들의 꾸준한 관심과 노력이 필요하다고 본다.

Over 20 years 'nammyeong' as the subject of numerous research results released to the world, but still nammyeong teacher awareness of the general public does not seem to be at least in Gyeongnam is terrible. Compared with the teacher, even if you do not bother Toegye, nammyeong the spirit of the country, and leading academic scholars in the spirit of former officials until people recognize that you need constant attention and looks.
Nammyeong for teachers identify academic efforts of the past 20 years has been recognized in academic circles. But for the disciples of nammyeong research, research on nammyeonghak par soon have a lot yet further support. A study of some of his disciples as revealed Naeam actively progressed, but, for many students, including suwoodang research is the beginning stage.
Study of young researchers to improve conditions there is an urgent task. Nammyeonghak Institute, focusing on hanmunhak and their emissions, but many young researchers, nammyeonghak personnel involved in the research that is just a few. Different circumstances, but the active support of school authorities to create conditions through research and young researchers to concentrate on their studies nammyeonghak also think it's important to create an atmosphere.
