디지털 기술의 비약적인 발전은 전통적인 문학과 문학연구에 새로운 도전을 제기하고 있다. 그동안 아우라와 상상력이 전통적인 문학과 문학연구의 특권화에 대한 기준이 되어왔으나, 최첨단 컴퓨터 신기술의 발전으로 인해 일반 대중문학과 예술도 보다 높은 차원의 아우라와 상상력을 표현할 수 있는 문화예술 양식으로 발전해왔다. 이에 디지털 시대의 문학연구는 문화연구로의 확장을 포함하는 새로운 형태를 취할 수밖에 없는 상황이다. 근래에 디지털 시대 문학의 존립과 정체성에 대한 논의가 이루어져왔음에도 불구하고, 디지털 시대의 문학과 종교 관련 논의는 미진한 것이 사실이다. 문학이 인간성에 대한 본질적 통찰과 궁극적 구원의 문제를 다룬다는 점에서 종교와 불가분의 관계에 있음에도 불구하고 말이다. 이제는 디지털 시대의 각종 신기술이 문학을 통한 인간의 종교적 상상력을 제한하기보다는 오히려 인간의 궁극적인 종교·철학적 물음에 대한 깊이를 더하고 있다는 점을 인정할 필요가 있다. “디지털 아우라”와 “디지털 상상력”은 인간존재의 근원과 구원의 문제를 보다 효과적으로 다룰 수 있는 무한한 예술적 상상력을 제공하고 있다. 미래의 문학과 종교 연구는 각종 디지털 문학과 예술을 섭렵하고 대중과 소통하는 학제 간 연구로 발전해야 마땅하겠다.

Due to the revolutionary development of digital technology, readers of literature and literary researchers could not but reconsider the modernistic definition of literature which was regarded as an essential form of art retaining ‘aura’ and ‘imagination.’ Since popular literature and various forms of art have started to draw a large amount of interest from the public by the benefit of high technology, there were a lot of efforts to understand the newly arrived digital era. Basically, literature deals with the theme of intrinsic redemption of human being, and contemporary literary works of art could effectively portray some religious ideas of human being using digital technology. However, there was not much endeavor to find a new way of studying “literature and religion” in the digital age. In the new surroundings of high technology, readers are needed to reflect on the positive meanings of ‘digital aura’ and ‘digital imagination’ which can richly portray human being’s religious mind, and prepare for the new possibilities of “literature and religion.”
