본 연구는 미국에 거주하고 있는 아시아계 미국인 청소년들의 자아존중감을 문화적 특성만으로 설명할 수 있는가를 알아보기 위해 그들의 영역특수 자아존중감을 살펴보았다. 가족과 교육을 중요시 하는 아시아문화가 아시아계 미국인 청소년들의 자아존중감에 중요한 영향을 미친다면, 가족과 학교가 그들의 자아존중감을 형성하는 중요한 영역일 것이라는 가설아래, 134명의 아시아계 미국인 청소년과 134명의 백인 미국인 청소년의 영역특수 자아존중감을 비교하였다. 연구결과를 살펴보면, 아시안계 미국인 청소년과 백인 청소년 모두, 또래와의 관계와 신체이미지가 그들의 자아존중감을 형성하는 가장 중요한 영역으로 나타났다. 아시아계 미국인 청소년은 학교성적과 가족관계를 제일 중요시 할 것이라는 일반적인 선입견과는 달리, 연구결과는 이들도 미국계 청소년들처럼, 자아존중감을 결정할 때 또래와의 관계와 다른 이들이 자신의 모습을 얼마나 매력적으로 볼 것인가를 가장 중요하게 여기고 있음을 보여주었다. 본 연구의 결과는 아시아계 미국인 청소년들의 자아존중감은 그들이 가지고 있는 아시아문화의 특성만으로는 설명될 수 없으며, 그들이 소수인종 학생으로서 문화적 동화과정을 통해 얻는 경험들과 여러 다른 요인들이 더 중요한 영향을 미치고 있다는 점을 보여주고 있다. 이 연구결과는 최근 급속한 다문화 청소년들의 증가를 보이는 한국에서도 다문화 청소년들의 겪는 문화적 사회적 경험들이 그들의 자아존중감 형성에 여러 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사하고 있다. 아시안계 미국인 청소년의 자아존중감을 더 깊이 이해하기 위하여 그들이 가지고 있는 두 가지 문화가 어떻게 상호작용하여 자아존중감 형성에 영향을 미치는지에 대한 후속 연구의 필요성도 제기되었다.

This study examined how Asian culture influences Asian American adolescents’ self-esteem by comparing their domain specific self-esteem with that of Caucasian American adolescents. It hypothesized that if Asian culture has a strong influence on Asian American adolescents’ self-esteem, family and school would be the two most important domains for their self-esteem since family solidarity and educational success are considered to be important features of Asian culture. 134 Asian American adolescents and 134 Caucasian American adolescents participated in the study. The data was analyzed by a 2x2 (sex and ethnicity) MANOVA and multiple regression analysis. The result reveals that peers and body image are the two most important domains for global self-esteem for both Asian American and Caucasian American adolescents. Contrary to the stereotypical image of Asian American adolescents, the finding reveals that they consider their peer relationships and how others perceive their physical attractiveness more important than their school achievements and family when they evaluate their self-worth. The finding suggests that Asian culture alone cannot explain Asian American adolescents’ self-esteem, but other factors such as the acculturation effect that takes place as Asian American adolescents deal with both Asian and American cultures, and their experiences as a racial minority must be considered in order to understand their self-esteem more accurately. As Korean society experiences a rapid growth of the multicultural adolescent population in recent years, this study provides helpful implications for Korean educators to understand these students of different backgrounds.
