본 연구의 목적은 외국인 유학생들의 한국어 능력 부족에 따른 대학원 생활 경험을 심층적으로 탐색해 보는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 내러티브 탐구 방법을 사용하여 8명의 외국인 대학원생들이 한국어 능력이 부족함에 따라 대학원 생활 경험이 어떻게 달라졌는가를 그들의 목소리로 이끌어 내고자 하였다. 자료 분석은 전체 이야기의 배경 안에서 현장 텍스트를 분석하는 내러티브 탐구 방법의 특징을 살려서 영역 분석과 분류 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 그들이 공통적으로 경험한 것은 한국어 능력 부족으로 인한 학업의 어려움, 한국어와 영어 혼용은 또 하나의 걸림돌, 한국어능력시험은 시험을 위한 시험, 언어연수 과정은 한국어 능력을 키우기 위한 징검다리와 같이 4가지로 분류할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서 밝혀진 결과는 앞으로 한국에서 유학하게 될 외국인 대학원생들에게 도움을 줄 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 외국인 대학원생 관리와 지원에도 유용할 것이며 이후의 유학생 유치를 위한 전략을 수립하는 데에도 도움이 될 것이다.

The aim of this research is to conduct an in-depth analysis of life experiences of foreign graduate students in regards to limited Korean language proficiency. Narrative inquiry was employed to elicit how the students’ Korean proficiency level is affecting their life throughout graduate school. The analysis of data is divided into two parts; domain analysis and taxonomic analysis. That is, analyzing the field text which is within the background of the whole text. As a result, the students had the following common experience: difficulties due to insufficient Korean proficiency, confusion between Korean and English, inefficiency of Test of Proficiency in Korean and efficiency of Korean language courses. This research is useful and helpful for the graduate international students who will be studying in Korea and for management and support in order to establish strategy for attracting more international students in the future.
