본 연구의 목적은 어머니의 다문화사회에 대한 공감과 아동의 사회적 능력 간의 관계를 알아보는 것이다. 연구대상은 서울 및 경기도, 인천에 거주하는 초등학교 4~6학년 아동 392명과 그 어머니를 대상으로 하였다. 어머니의 다문화사회에 대한 공감을 측정하기 위하여 Wang 등(2003)이 개발한 다문화공감 척도(The Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy: SEE)를 사용하였다. 아동의 사회적 능력을 측정하기 위하여 이경희(1993)가 개발한 척도를 사용하였다. 자료분석은 t-검증과 상관분석을 실시하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어머니의 다문화사회에 대한 공감 수준은 전반적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 아동의 사회적 능력은 평균 수준이었으며, 성별에 따라 차이가 있었다. 즉, 여학생들이 남학생들보다 사회적 능력이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 어머니의 다문화사회에 대한 공감과 아동의 사회적 능력은 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 공감적 조망수용과 공감적 인식 수준이 높은 어머니를 둔 아동은 또래관계에서 사교적이고 주도적인 역할을 담당하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 어머니의 다문화사회에 대한 공감은 아동의 사회적 능력과 관련이 있는 것으로 나타나 아동의 또래관계에 있어서 부모의 태도가 매우 중요함을 알 수 있었다.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mother's ethnocultural empathy and children's social competence. Three-hundred ninety two children of 4th to 6th grade in elementary school and their mothers in Seoul, Kyunggi-do and Incheon area were participated. Mother's ethnocultural empathy was measured by The Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy(Wang et al., 2003). Children's social competence was measured by The Scale of Social Competence(Lee, 1993). The data were analyzed by t-test and Pearson's correlation.
The findings of this study were as followers. First, mother's ethnocultural empathy level looked high. And children's social competence was average level. There was significant difference in social competence by gender. Girl's social competence was high than boys. Second, mother's ethnocultural empathy and children's social competence were found to be related. It was shown that children whose mothers were high in empathic perspective taking and empathic awareness were sociable and initiated. As the results, the attitude of parents in the development of children's peer relationships was very important.
