이 글의 목적은 대표적인 현대 미국 시인 드니스 레버토프의 시에서 하시디즘의 영향을 살펴보려는 것이다. 레버토프와 하시디즘을 연계한 기존의 50년대의 초기시에 초점을 맞춘 반면, 본고는 후기시까지 논의를 확장하였다. 레버토프 집안의 가계에는 하시디즘의 위대한 랍비인 셰누르 잘만이 있으며, 시인은 하시디즘을 러시아계 유대인 부친을 통해서 접했다. 레버토프의 초기시는 하시디즘의 영향이 창조된 세계 속에서의 기쁨과 경이감을 종종 표현하는 데에서 구현되며 ｢아침｣과 ｢불꽃｣은 그 대표적인 실례이다. 1960년대 베트남전이 발발하자 전쟁의 참혹함 앞에서 레버토프는 절망과 분노의 암흑기를 겪는다. 그러나 80년대 가톨릭으로의 개종은 다시 자연속에서 기쁨과 경이감을 회복하는 전기로 작용한다. 하시디즘과 카톨릭은 신의 사랑에 대한 신뢰라는 공통분모를 갖는다. 레버토프의 후기 종교시 ｢영광송｣, ｢선언｣, ｢주된 경이｣에는 “기쁨,” “경이,” “믿음”이 주조를 이루는데, 그것은 유년시절 하시디즘의 영향이 후기에까지 파장을 일으키는 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 변증법으로 정리하자면 초기시에 나타난 하시디즘의 영향이 정, 중기시의 베트남 반전시의 절망과 분노는 반, 후기의 가톨릭에 기반을 둔 종교시는 하시디즘의 합에 해당될 것이다.

This paper aims to investigate the influence of Hasidism in the poetry of Denise Levertov. Hasidism is mysticism whose core belief is presence of immanent divinity in everything. Owing to her multi-cultural heritage, Levertov was exposed to this belief from her childhood through her father Paul Levertov and her ancestors including Sheneur Zalman, a great Russian Rabbi of Hasidism. Levertov’s early poetry portrays a sense of wonder at creation and joy in the physical world. This sense of sacred in the ordinary life is expressed in “Martins” and “Sparks.” In the 1960s when the Vietnamese War broke out, in the face of hideous crimes of humanity, Levertov underwent dark period of anger and despair. However, in the 1980s with her conversion to Catholicism, she regained the feeling of joy and wonder again. The Hasidism and the Franciscans share the joyful vision of life as well as trust in the love of God. As she was fully engaged in her life, she tried to express prayers for union of God in words. It is in the last phase of her literary career which the Hasidism and Catholicism converge in her poems.
