이 논문은 현대인의 정체성 혼란과 도덕적 위기 앞에서 실제적인 해답을 찾 아보고자 출발하였다. 인간은 자신의 이야기를 구성함으로써 정체성을 갖는다. 그런 점에서 이태석의 친구가 되어 주실래요?라는 자서전적 서사는 ‘나는 누 구인가’를 드러내고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이 책은 연대기적인 서술은 없으나 이 태석이라는 작가가 책 속의 화자와 동일인이 되어 전개된다. 이태석은 친구가 되어 주실래요?라는 자서전적 서사에서 남수단에서의 자신의 텔로스를 발견한 일들을 고백하고 있다. 또한 그는 남수단 사람들과의 관계 속에서 자기 자신을 깊숙히 들여다보는 성찰적 글쓰기를 하고 있다. 한편으로는 남수단의 현실 상황 을 열거하거나 설명하여 자신의 생각을 전하고자 하는 강한 의도를 드러내기도 한다. 이 논문은 이러한 자서전적 글쓰기의 특징으로 드러나는 이태석의 삶을 크게 두 가지로 바라보았다. 그는 남수단의 일을 서술함으로써 실천적 지혜를 가르쳐 주었다는 것이다. 또한 그는 자신의 공감 능력을 통해 남수단 사람들의 공감을 이끌어내었고 그의 이야기를 듣고 공감한 이들이 그와 같이 실천적 지 혜를 발휘한다는 것이다. 따라서 이 논문은 그의 삶이 공동체 회복의 가치를 이 루는 데 유의미하다고 논의하였다.

This paper tries to suggest practical solution facing the ethical crisis and identity confusion of modern society. People realize their identity through constructing their own story. In that sense, Tae-seok Lee’s autobiographical story, Would You Be My Friend? answers to the question of ‘Who am I?’ in his perspective. While the story is not organized in chronological order, Tae-seok Lee, the author, recounts his story as the narrator in the book. Tae-seok Lee confesses that he found his own telos in the Republic of South Sudan. Through contact with the people of the Republic of South Sudan, Lee writes his story with deep self-examination. He also asserts his own thinking by listing and explaining reality in the Republic of South Sudan. This paper examines the significance of Lee’s life indicating the characteristics of autobiographical writing from two main perspectives. He teaches phronesis while describing what happened in the Republic of South Sudan. At the same time, he arouses the empathy of people in the Republic of South Sudan through his empathic ability. In turn, the people who sympathize with his talk exhibit phronesis following him. This paper argues that his life is crucial in achieving the value of recovering community.
