기독교 역사에서 여성들은 남성들과 평등한 존재로서 대접받고 인식되기 보 다는 남성에게 종속된 존재로서 남성보다 열등한 존재로 천대받아 왔다. 이러한 사상은 여성을 남성의 소유물 혹은 재산의 일부로 간주하며 여성의 역할을 제 한한 기독교의 모태인 유대교에서 파생된 것으로 이것은 신화, 문학, 과학 등의 영역에도 스며들었다. 누가복음은 독특한 문학적 방식을 통해 예수의 가르침과 사역에서 여성도 남성과 동등한 존재로 인정받고 있음을 부각시키고 있다. 누가 복음에서는 먼저 당시 사회에서 주목받지 못하던 약자인 많은 여성들을 전면에 등장시키고 있으며, 여성들의 일상적인 삶의 경험을 사용하여 하나님 나라를 설 명함으로써 여성에 대한 배려와 관심을 보여주고 있다. 또한 곳곳에서 남성과 여성을 나란하게 짝을 이루어 등장시키므로 여성들을 남성과 동등하게 하나님 의 은혜의 수혜자로, 하나님 나라의 새로운 공동체의 일원임을 부각시키고 있 다. 예수의 가르침과 사역에 등장하는 여성들을 남성과 동등하게 때로는 남성보 다 더 중요한 모습으로 부각시키는 누가복음의 독특한 문학적 구조는 인류의 보편적인 가치인 양성평등과 인권과 여성문제와 관련하여 당시에 왜곡된 여성 의 위치와 역할을 혁신적으로 개혁하고 있음을 보여준다.

The Gospel of Luke emphasizes the new position of women in Christ. The story of Martha and Mary can be understood in this context(Luke 10:38-42). This anecdote proves that Mary convinces Jesus of her faith and Jesus approves of women’s competence in understanding the divine words. Furthermore, his outspoken encouragement of women’s religious participation comes from his unprejudiced attitude towards women. The story of Martha and Mary is the story about a new status and role to contrast with a woman’s traditional status and role voiced by Martha. In addition, it is the story of a visionary on absolutely new and equal place of the Kingdom of God that Jesus Christ proclaimed. And it is the story required to reorganize traditional values and orders in the light of the Kingdom of God. It is the story on the radical nature of Kingdom as the upside-down world. And so, it tells us that one believing in Jesus must reorientate one’s lifestyle in the new ways of Kingdom. The complete realization of Jesus’ decisive will for women’s liberation still awaits a long and difficult journey.
