이 논문은 19세기 말엽에 편찬된 것으로 추정되는 야사총서 󰡔稗林󰡕의 가치와 특징을 분석하였다. 󰡔稗林󰡕은 일찍부터 영인되어 학계에서 널리 이용된 대표적 인 야사총서다. 하지만 사료로서의 가치나 편찬 과정에 대해 깊이 있는 학술적 분석이 가해지지 않았다. 본고는 󰡔패림󰡕이 지닌 가치와 특징을 밝히는 것을 목 표로 하였다. 󰡔패림󰡕의 편찬자는 구체적으로 이름이 밝혀지지 않지만, 󰡔대동패림󰡕을 빌려 서 轉寫할만큼 沈魯崇 집안과 친분이 두터운 서울 경기 지역의 노론 명문가의 일원이며, 역사에 관심이 깊은 학자일 가능성이 높다. 󰡔패림󰡕은 조선후기 야사총서 편찬의 과정 속에서 출현했으며, 10여종의 비 중이 큰 야사총서 가운데 마지막 단계에 위치한다. 󰡔패림󰡕에 수록된 개별야사 의 분석을 통해서, 󰡔패림󰡕은 󰡔大東稗林󰡕의 轉寫를 통하여 형성되었다는 사실 이 입증되었다. 따라서 󰡔패림󰡕은 金鑢가 편찬한 󰡔寒皐觀外史󰡕ㆍ󰡔倉可樓外史󰡕 의 계통을 밟은 野史叢書群인 󰡔대동패림󰡕, 󰡔패림󰡕, 󰡔廣史󰡕 계열에 속한다. 그러 나 󰡔패림󰡕은 내용의 일부를 󰡔鵝洲雜錄󰡕에서 취하였고, 󰡔패림󰡕만의 특색을 보여 주는 󰡔正宗紀事󰡕, 󰡔純祖紀事󰡕, 󰡔憲宗紀事󰡕, 󰡔哲宗紀事󰡕를 총서의 전면에 내세 웠으며, 비교적 방대한 분량을 지닌 야사인 󰡔我我錄󰡕, 󰡔辛壬紀年提要󰡕, 󰡔修書 雜志󰡕와 같은 야사를 포함함으로써 질적으로나 양적으로 독자성을 확보하였 다. 󰡔패림󰡕은 기존의 야사총서가 지닌 장점을 흡수한 바탕 위에서 주로 정치사 관련 야사를 수록하였다. 따라서 19세기 야사에 대한 학자들의 관심과 야사이 해의 실상을 극명하게 보여주는 자료다.

This paper analyzes the value and characteristics of Paerim(稗林) that was allegedly written in the late nineteenth century among the unofficial history series in the late Choson. Paerim(稗林) is one representative unofficial history series well known to the academic circle earlier on. However, it has not been analyzed scientifically on its value as a historical material and the process of compilation. The compiler of Paerim was not clarified, but it is presumed that one scholar, a man of high lineage belonging to the noron(老論) party acquainted with Sim No-sung(沈魯崇) family compiled this series. Paerim emerged in the last stage of the publication of unofficial history series in the late Choson and it was proved that Paerim was reconstructed through the transcription of Daedonpaerim. However, Paerim has its own originality in terms of quantity and quality. Paerim collected the unofficial histories related with political history, on the basis of absorbing the virtues of the existing unofficial history series. Therefore, it shows the overall features of unofficial history in the nineteenth century.
