본 논문의 목적은 함허선사(1376~1433)의 사상을 살펴봄과 동시 에 수행과 깨달음에서 오는‘비움과 충만’의 시적 미학을 모색하는 데 있다. 함허는『현정론』을 통해 유자들의 불교비판의 부당성을 주 장하고‘유불융합’의 회통과 조화로운 관계 모색을 통해 불교의 정체 성을 지켜내려 했다. 그의 이러한 사유와 실천은 앞서간 선사들을 통 한 자기 확인, 점수(漸修)의 과정을 담은 관조의 시, 산사에서 느끼는 한가함과 탈속무애한 정서가 내재된 시편들을 통해 잘 드러난다. 함허의 이러한 시적 세계는 직관을 통한 교화사상과 자연과 조화를 이룬 시심의 결과물이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 자연과 조화를 이룬 무 심의 세계는 그의 선적 직관과 시적 상상력이 조화를 이루어 빚어낸 물아일여의 깨달음의 세계이다. 여기에는 내려놓기와 걸림이 없고 무심한 삶의 관조의 세계가 선명하게 드러난다. 함허의 수행에서 빼놓을 수 없는 것 역시‘선다일여(禪茶一如)’의 수행이다. 그래서 함허는 깨달음을 얻어가는 수행 과정에서 차로 마 음을 맑히고 진여를 찾는다. 한 잔의 차를 마심으로써 집중과 통찰을 높이고 마음을 비우고 자신을 관조하며 깨달음에 이르렀던 것이다. 일체의 집착을 놓아버리고 무심의 상태에서 사물을 관조하는 무심합 도에서 배태된 함허의 맑고 투명한 언어의 시편들은 내려놓기와 비 움의 지혜를 준다. 또한 그의 이러한 시편들은 텅 빈 충만의 세계를 보듬게 함으로써 번다함과 집착으로 살아가는 현대인들의 지친 심신 을 치유하는 한 줄기 바람으로 작용할 수 있는 메시지를 전해준다.

The purpose of this paper is to look into the background of Seon Master Hamheo’s thought and to grape for the poetic aesthetic of ‘emptiness and fullness’and its possibility of healing mind as well. Hamheo diagnosed that Confucians’attacks on Buddhism derived from their misunderstanding and mistrust on it. So, he tried to establish Buddhism’s identity and to wipe out their distorted understanding of Buddhism through Hyeonjeongron(An Essay for Revealing Buddhism). Hamheo asserted that the teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are ultimately not different in their essence. Such thought and practice are revealed in the following poems: self-identification through precedent Seon masters, contemplation of gradual cultivation, unworldliness and free from all obstacles. Hamheo’s poetic world is the production of the harmonization of nature and one of the enlightenment through the intuition. In particular, no-mind world, harmonizing with nature, is one of enlightenment toward ‘objects and self are oneness’originating in his Seon intuition and poetic imagination. Hence, in these tendency poems, the contemplative thought on life such as ‘letting it go’and ‘no-obstacles’and ‘no-mind’is shown well. Also, “Daseon Ilyeo”(Seon and Tea are oneness) is a focal point in Hamheo’s practice. Actually, in the course of attain enlightenment, he tried to clear mind and to seek truesuchness by drinking of tea because by drinking tea, he could enhance insight and concentration of the mind, could empty mind, or could contemplate self and get to enlightenment. Therefore, Hamheo’s clear and transparent poetry contemplating things in the state of no-mind without attachment give us the wisdom of “letting it go”and “emptiness and fullness.”Also, his poetry can operates as an autumn wind to people who are fatigued in mind and body due to attachment and greed today.
