‘효’라는 주제에 가려 주목 받지 못하지만, 『심청전』에는 인간의 종교적인 모습들이 많이 담겨있다. 방민호의 소설 『연인 심청』(2015)은 종교적, 신화적인 요소들을 고전소설 『심청전』보다 더 분명히 보여준다. 방민호는 『심청전』을 재해석한 이전의 현대작가들과는 달리, 신앙의 대상인 초월적 존재들을 등장시 키고 초자연적인 사건들을 계속 서술하는 등, 『심청전』의 신화적 내용을 과감 하게 수용한다. 여기서 더 나아가, 『연인 심청』은 『심청전』이 뚜렷이 드러내지 않은 인간의 종교적인 면 세 가지를 강조한다. 첫째, 작품에서 심청은 끊임없이 인간 존재와 삶의 의미에 대한 질문을 던지고, 부조리한 세상 너머의 가치를 추 구한다. 이런 면에서 심청은 엘리아데가 말한, 매우 전형적인 ‘종교적 인 간’(Homo Religiosus)이다. 둘째, 방민호는 심청을 통해, 종교적 인간이 불완전 하고 가변적이고 무의미한 자신의 삶과 대조되는 완전하고 불변하며 유의미한 성스러움을 지향하고, 그 성스러운 존재가 자신의 부족함을 채워줄 것을 갈망하 는 모습을 보여준다. 셋째, 『연인 심청』은 심청의 진정한 사랑이라는 초월적인 능력으로 욕망에 눈먼 인간들이 구원받을 수 있다고 말한다. 심청은 고통과 부 조리의 세상 속에서 종교적 속성을 바탕으로 자신과 남을 구원하는 신화의 주 인공의 모습을 보여주며, 신화가 인간에게 제시하는 모범적 본보기의 역할을 충 실히 수행하는 것이다.

Sim Cheong Jeon shows religious aspects of human beings, though they are often unnoticed and overshadowed by its clear subject, the filial piety. Bang’s Yeon-in Sim Cheong reveals religious and mythic elements more clearly than Sim Cheong Jeon. Unlike other modern novelists reinterpreting Sim Cheong Jeon previously, Bang decisively accepts of the mythic contents of Sim Cheong Jeon. Furthermore, Bang’s novel articulates three religious aspects of human beings. First, Sim ceaselessly asks questions concerning human existence and the meaning of life, and pursues values transcending this world. In this sense, she exactly corresponds to Mircea Eliade’s “homo religiosus.” Second, through Sim, Bang demonstrates how a religious person aspires toward perfect, eternal, and meaningful sacredness and wishes for the sacred to fill up her deficiencies. Third, Sim’s true love has the power to save people who are blind due to their human desire. Sim plays the role of the heroin of myths who saves herself and others through her religious attributes, and serves as the paradigmatic model for people.
