어느 나라에서든 국민들이 진정 잘 살 수 있으려면 물질적 복지뿐 아니라 ‘영적 복지’가 중요하다. 이런 점에서 종교는 ‘국민적 자본’이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 인간으로서 가장 기본적인 ‘인간다움’의 결여로 인해 사회적 문제들이 제 기되자 한국 사회는 ‘인성교육’을 강조하게 되었는데, 종교교육은 인성교육의 매우 중심적 내용과 연관된다. 한국의 종교 현실은 무엇보다도 다종교 상황으로 특징 지워진다. 따라서 개개인이 자신의 종교에 대해 건전한 이해를 가지는 것 은 물론, 타종교인과의 공존이 종교교육에서 매우 강조된다. 이는 ‘인성교육’이 자신의 인간다운 본성을 찾아가고 또 타인의 본성을 배려하는 데 초점을 맞추 는 것과 맥을 함께 한다. 전통적 성년의례들이 단순히 육체적 성숙뿐 아니라 자 신이 포함된 문화 속에서 자신을 재발견해내고 공동체의 타자들과 함께 살아가 는 길을 알려주는 것은 인성교육으로서 종교교육의 역할을 보여준다. 인류는 윤 리적으로 진화해왔다. 즉 점점 더 폭 넓게 주변 존재들에 동류의식을 개발해왔 다. 더 열린 종교관을 가르치는 것은 진정한 ‘인성교육’에 시사하는 바가 크다.

Not only material well-being but ‘spiritual well-being’ is also important in people’s lives in many countries. In this regard, religion may be considered a ‘national capital.’ As social problems have been increasing due to the lack of the fundamental ‘humanity,’ there has been an emphasis of ‘education of humanism’ in Korea. Korea has been characterized as a multi-religious society. Thus, not only sound understanding of one’s own religion but also a coexistence with people of other religions is stressed in the religious education. This is in line with the ‘education of humanism’ that focuses on giving consideration for others as well as discovering in one’s own human nature. The role of religious education in the ‘education of humanism’ can be witnessed in traditional initiation rites, which lead the initiate to rediscover oneself and to live well with others in the community. Ethical thoughts of mankind has evolved over time: man has gradually developed ‘consciousness of kind’ wider to the beings around. Thus, increasing more openness to other religions provides better insights into a true ‘education of humanism.’
