유색칼라 ‘White Morning’은 2007년 수원 국립원예특 작과학원에서 무름병에는 약하지만 자구번식력이 좋고 꽃모양이 우수한 육성계통 ‘05-14-1’의 방임교잡에서 획득 한 종자로부터 2008년 잎절편 무름병저항성 검정을 통 해 유색칼라 ‘09-C4-2’ 계통을 개체 선발하였다. 2009년 부터 2011년까지 구근 증식 및 1, 2차 생육특성검정을 수행하고, 포장저항성검정, 구근증식특성검정을 거쳐 2012 년에 ‘원교C4-4호’로 계통명을 부여하여 3차 특성검정 및 기호도 평가를 수행한 결과, 바이러스 발병이 적고, 개 화기가 빠른 소형화로 고온기에도 생육이 왕성하고, 자 구번식력이 우수한 계통으로 그 우수성이 인정되어 2012 년에 직무육성품종심의회를 거쳐 ‘White Morning’으로 명 명하고 2013년 국립종자원에 품종을 출원하여 2014년에 품종 등록되었다. ‘White Morning’은 RHS colour chart 의 W155A(백색) 바탕에 연분홍색 테두리의 유색칼라 절 화용 품종으로 대조품종에 비해 일주일정도 개화기가 빠르 고 초장이 59.7cm, 엽장이 27cm, 화경장이 44.4cm이고 화 폭이 4.8m로 초세는 좋고 꽃크기가 작은 편이다. ‘White Morning’은 소비자기호성이 높고 바이러스에 강한 편이며, 고온기에도 생육이 우수하고 자구증식율도 좋은 품종이다.

White Morning, one of a kind colored calla lily cultivar, which flowers in early spring was developed at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2012. White Morning was produced from open pollination system in which the breeding line 05-14-1 that characterized good flower shape and high bulb multiplication was used as though it was susceptible to soft rot. From 2007 to 2008, 09-C4-2 which had stable flower shape and moderate resistance to soft rot was primarily selected by the first test used in in vitro leaf disk method of inoculating, which examined morphological characteristics and resistance to soft rot. After multiplication and enlargement of bulbs were determined, the second test that examined growth conditions and characteristics of flowering stage was performed from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, the last line survived, 09-C4-2, was called as ‘Wonkyo C404’. To evaluate expected probability of commercial use, ‘Wonkyo C404’ has been through certain tests that examined resistance to soft rot and viruses, rate of bulb multiplication, and consumer preferences. In this regard, ‘Wonkyo C4-4’ was selected finally for the use of cut flower; moreover, it was publicly renamed as ‘White Morning’ through New Variety Deliberation Committee of Rural Development Administration. ‘White Morning’ is a relatively small flower whose diameter was 4.8 cm, and its color is white (RHS W155A) with pink edged. In addition, the plant height and flower stalk length are 59.7 cm and 44.4 cm, respectively. The flower belongs to a type of early-flowering cultivar whose blooming time is 7 days earlier than flowering of the control, ‘Snow Bird’, and its flowering period lasts 62 days. In addition, its bulb multiplies 1.7 times faster than it of the control one. Although it has a moderate resistance to soft rot, it does not show infectious symptoms caused by virus during cultivation.
