윌리엄 버틀러 예이츠(W. B. Yeats)가 자신의 시와 작품에서 하나님의 말씀 즉 진리를 말하려고 한다. 그의 시 『행복한 목동의 노래』를 주로 다루고 있으며 그 시에 나오는 “말”이나 “위로자”와 같은 단어들이 하나님의 말씀과 깊이 관련 되어 있다. 예이츠는 현 시대의 사람들은 진리에 더 이상 관심이 없고 하찮은 진리를 숭배하는 “회색진리”에 관심이 있다고 느낀다. 그러므로 예이츠는 “말씀 만이 참으로 선하다”고 사람들에게 말한다. 성경은 말씀은 하나님이시며 하나 님의 말씀이 바로 예수 그리스도라고 말한다. 예이츠는 하나님의 말씀 즉 성령 하나님이 사람들의 마음속에 거한다면, 사람들은 그분 안에서 기쁨과 평강을 누 릴 것이라고 믿는다. 예이츠는 이 시에서 “말”이란 단어를 일곱 번이나 사용하 여 말씀의 중요성을 강조하고 있다. 예이츠는 회색진리로 물든 이 세상이 참된 “진리”로 물든 세상이 되기를 염원하고 있다. 이 진리는 바로 예수 그리스도를 상징한다. 예이츠는 상징적인 언어들을 사용하여 그리스도의 이미지를 자신의 시에서 나타내 보이고 있다. 예이츠가 이 시에서 사용한 말이란 단어는 바로 하 나님의 말씀을 의미하고 있다. 예이츠는 하나님의 말씀이 이 세상의 사람들에게 필요한 진정한 “위로자”가 된다는 사실을 보여주고 있다.

W. B. Yeats tries to tell the Truth, the Word of God in his poems and writings. This paper mainly deals with his poem, “The Song of the Happy Shepherd” and proves that ‘Words,’ ‘comforters,’ and so on in the poem are deeply related to the Word of God. Yeats feels that the present world is painted with ‘Grey Truth’ because people in the world are not interested in the Truth any more and they worship ‘dusty deeds.’ Therefore, Yeats wants to tell people ‘Words alone are certain good.’ The Bible says that the Word is God and the Word of God is Jesus Christ. Yeats believes that if the Word of God, a Comforter abides in the hearts of people, people will have peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The Scripture says that the Comforter is the Holy Spirit. Yeats uses ‘comforters’ as the Holy Spirit in “The Song of the Happy Shepherd.” He also uses the ‘Word’ as a symbol of Jesus Christ. Though Yeats does not show in his poems directly that he believes in Christ, he indicates the image of Christ by using many symbolic words in his poetry. As for W.B. Yeats, the truth means the Word of God in the poem.
